Summer Storm It is late The air is cool and silent Flaunting its unchallenged serenity The sky is ominous and withdrawn Lying awake in its own anticipation Suddenly A gust of wind forgotten in the midst of tranquility Begins to stir It moves stealthily Brandishing its nascent strength poised steadily like a weapon The trees tremble in mock apprehension To the growing fury of the wind From nowhere — everywhere — The sound of a new power is heard Echoing within the limits of space itself. The trees quake and bow In now unfeigned desperation Light begins to pierce the sky Its searing heat scorching The very air by which it moves The light threatens and is yet silent As though dwarfed by the thunder The stage is set And in the air is felt The tacit emotions of the night That which exists. stands in awestruck witness To the absurdity of a universe pitted against itself To the unreality of a world locked in a ludicrous dubious checkmate. And so comes the rain softly, wordlessly A welcomed arbitor In an uncompromising universe Ursula Bartels
