Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1987 volume:

THE FOUNDATION OF EVERY STATE IS THE EDUCATION OF ITS YOUTH. Diogenes The class of nineteen hundred and eighty seven is proud to dedicate our yearbook to a special classmate. MARK CARROLL (1969-1983) Mark will always be remembered for his smiling face and his special love for baseball. Everyone who knew Mark was his friend; he had no enemies We miss vou Mark. IN APPRECIATION The class of 1987 would like to take this opportunity to thank our parents for their time and devotion. Their hard work and concern enriched our high school years with a “Prom breakfast,” the First Annual Homecoming Weekend, Booster’s activities, and the Abington Citizens Scholarship Foundation. Most of all, we’d like to thank them for their care and understanding during the best and worst times in our lives. FROM THE EDITORS Editors Joanne Murphy Anne Kelliher Advisor Mr. Robinson Dear Classmates, As the editors of this yearbook, we would like to present this book to you in the hopes that it will hold for you all the good memories of your four years at Abington High School. The town has a varied and colorful history, from the 18th century when Abington encompassed the areas of present day Abington. Whitman, and Rockland to the days of the Civil War when Abington factories produced half the shoes worn by Union soldiers. We wish Abington continued success and prosperity for the future. As time goes by many of us will move on to continue our , but many of us will remain in Abington to build our future. We all, however, have memories of Abington that will last forever. Happy 275th Birthday Abington! dream many ?mories of Abington tl Saw 1m -I ABINGTON 6 ADMINISTRATION Mr. Byron, Principal On behalf of the entire staff of Abington High School I would like to extend our congratulations to you. Although you have had an impact on Abington High School, your impact on the future will be greater. As the leaders of the twenty-first century, you will face many new and demanding challenges. As decision makers, your judge- ments must be guarded by the highest ethical standards — expediency must not replace honesty, practicality must not supersede concern for others. Paul E. We were entering a point in our lives which marked true adulthood. We elected Melissa Ackerly, Rich Campbell, Claire Morgan, and Teresa Keenan to guide us through our first year. By the end of the year, we became daring enough to attempt our first fundraiser- raffling off a Cabbage Patch Kid. At the rallies, we tried our best to demonstrate our spirit, but we were outdone by the upperclassmen. We took pride in the Cross-country Team as they captured the S.S. League title, and we cheered for the band as they reigned supreme in the Quincy Christmas Parade, followed by a trip to Florida. As our first year of high school ended we were relieved and excited and filled with anticipation at the prospect of being Sophomores. SOPHOMORE YEAR As the summer came to a close, we returned as Sophomores and took up residence on the second floor. We weren’t upper classmen yet, but we were closer to reaching that goal. We chose Karen Smolinski, Chris Miller, Claire Morgan, and Amy Trosky to work with Mr. Corcoran in order to raise money for our class. Like the Sophomores before us, we sold M M’s and Reeses cups to enlarge our treasury (and our waistline!!). Many of us ordered class rings and by wearing them, we truly felt a part of Abington High. We shared in the many victories of our sports and activities. Our Soccer, Hockey, Softball, and Baseball teams all qualified for the State Tournament. The band also showed potential in travelling to Toronto to compete against international bands. Yet another year went by quickly and we were looking forward to genuine upperclassmen status as Juniors. JUNIOR YEAR We made it!!! We were true upperclassmen and we enjoyed our new status and new location on the third floor. We were just starting to adjust to our newly acquired power when Hurricane Gloria struck. We were left without power and school for a week and enjoyed the unexpected time off. We elected Karen Smolinski, Rick Clifford, Dana Brown, and Nora LoGiudice to guide us through this very special year. Along with the support of Mrs. Powers, they worked hard selling gift items, selling sweatshirts, and collecting dues, to raise money for our Junior Prom. Once again our sports teams came through for their supportive fans. The girls’ Soccer Team won its first S.S. League title, as did the Softball team. The Hockey and Girls’ basketball teams were also successful by qualifying for the State Tournament. A great deal of planning was necessary for a successful Junior Prom. Our Prom Committee elected Kim Colotta and Melissa Ackerly to work with Mrs. Powers in organizing our prom. Finally our special night arrived. On, May 23, we nervously paraded around the gym in our formal wear. We then joined Heather and her court at the Son’s of Italy Hall as they danced to “This Could Be The Night.” The few weeks of school after the prom rushed by. We left for the summer looking forward to the much deserved title of “Seniors” we would hold in September. SENIOR YEAR We returned to A.H.S. for our last year with excitement. We were all looking forward to being respected Seniors, yet we were sad that our times together were ending. We elected Cherie Bombardier, Rick Clifford, Claire Morgan, and Bill McDevitt to help our class during this hectic year. With the ceaseless help of Miss Nisby, our officers planned several fundraisers, such as Operation Carnation, dances, Data-Match, and selling chocolate Santas, to defray our many expenses. The beginning of our final year was trying. Many hours were spent in the Guidance Department, choosing colleges and planning for our future. Our sports teams were showing great promise. The girls’ Soccer team made it all the way to the State finals, capturing the Eastern Mass title along the way. The football team showed promise for the future by defeating Hull and breaking their losing streak. As our time together ends, we will all be looking forward to Class Night, Senior Reception, and Graduation. We have shared many good times and shared experiences that we will always remember. We’ve made many friends, had many laughs, and cried many tears, but we will always remember The Year, 87. Smith will always be remembered in Abington as a great man and an exceptional teacher. Those of us who were fortunate enough to know him learned many things from him. Not only did he teach us to play our instruments and march eight steps to a yard line, he also taught us to be better human beings. We learned how to strive for excellence and work together as a team. He was patient, determined, and always full of energy. Somehow he managed to relay those qualities on to his students. Paul Smith had great respect for his band members and they had great respect for him. Anyone who is or was once a member of the Abington High School band will remember the 1986- 1987 season as the end of a great era in music and the beginning of a new one. Cooperation and mutual support among the band members and the music staff played an important role in the achievements of the band this year. Together they mourned in the passing of the beloved Mr. Smith, and together they gave exciting performances on the competition field, in parades, and in concert band. Maintaining a competitive spirit, which the Abington High School Band has always possessed throughout the years, this year’s band particiapted in such competitions as East Bridgewater, Foxboro Stadium, and the Massachusetts Instrumental Conductors’ Association finals and the Quincy Christmas Parade. So many changes have occurred in all of us in just four years. We can look back now and see how much we’ve grown since we were freshmen. Now we are preparing to leave something that has had a different, profound effect on all of us • something that has become an important part of our lives. The prospect of graduating and getting out into the world is an exciting one, but a scary one, too. Many of us will go different ways and all our lives will undoubtedly change. No one knows exactly what we will find out there, but the future is ours to make what we want out of it. In whatever each of you pursue, may you find the courage to be yourselves, and may you find much happiness and fulfillment in life. Life is the ultimate experience, an ongoing learning process, so live it to the fullest. Never forget the friends you made at A.H.S. or the people here who made a difference in your life. They will always be a part of you, even if only in memory. Never forget the good times - they are ours to share forever with our friends no matter where we may go. I’d like to wish all of you the best of luck, happiness, and peace, with the hope that we will all fulfill our dreams. I dedicate this article with much love to the entire cast and crew of the play. Special thanks to our director Tom Haynes. Ms. Nisby, the A.S.A.P.. Ms. Crooks. Kevin LaRiviere and most of all to the memory of Eddie LaRiviere (1961-1977). These are my personal reflections and in a sense, our story. I remember when our Senior Class Advisor. Ms. Nisby. came into psychology class. She said that they were planning a presentation of a play called Eddie Was Here. The play was a true story of a young man's life cut short by drugs and alcohol at the age of sixteen. The person behind the play was a man named Kevin LaRiviere. He had a personal interest in the play, for it was his brother's life we were depicting. When Ms. Nisby asked for volunteers there weren’t that many. Finally a few poeple, including myself, signed up. What amazed me was that the kids I had thought of as loud were suddenly very quiet. I saw Ms. Nisby again in English class. There were still not many volunteers. When I went to the auditions on Monday night. September 22nd. I was surprised at the number of kids there • many more than I expected. Some I was friends with, and some I didn’t know too well. Our director, Tom Haynes, soon became a favorite with us because of his sense of humor and unlimited energy. We soon learned, however, that he could be tough when he wanted to be Everyone was given one scene to auditon in • the scene between Eddie and his girlfriend. Julie. After seeing everybody in action, we knew that Chris Hamblin and Ann Marie Beaudreau were perfect for the parts Unfortunately, not everyone got a speaking role. One of those people was this reporter. I was so angry at first that I vowed I wouldn’t have anything more to do with the play. I decided to go to one rehearsal - and that would be it. But that wasn’t it. and I’m so glad that I stuck with the play - if I hadn’t, you wouldn’t be reading about our incredible experience. We would have two rehearsals, then a dress rehearsal the night before the production I was only needed for the two party scenes, then I would leave while Tom worked with the leads. I remember that some of the girls said that they were going to cry at the end of the show. I was thinking more about what the audience would do. We put on three shows in all, two in the morning and one at night. The first was for the sophomores, juniors, and seniors - our peers, people we had known for years How would they react?” I wondered. The second show was the freshman and students of the junior high. The third show was presented for parents, residents, and those who wanted to see it again. The dress rehearsal was on that Sunday night. I didn’t want to go. instead I wanted to stand in line for Red Sox tickets, but my parents wouldn’t let me. I came to the rehearsal very upset. Mary and Peggy talked to me. as did the other kids, and helped me feel better. I remember that Peter, who played Eddie’s father, asked me what was wrong. When I told him that it was just a dumb argument with my parents he hugged me and said. That's why we’re doing this, to make parents understand us better. I walked for a while on the school grounds, then came back inside. I was at first scared to go in, but Mary helped me relax. What touched me most about that night occurred when Kevin LaRiviere afterwards told us how good we were Then he looked at Chris and told him that he reminded him of somebody he used to know very well. We didn’t have to ask who we knew The next day came sooner than we expected We reported to the gym at 7:00 am. At 7:50 the show began. It went great. Everyone in the cast was fabulous When we took our bows. Chris and Ann Marie got the biggest hand, not only from the audience, but from us too for their fine work. I cried like everyone else and we all hugged each other. I don’t think there was a dry eye in that auditorium. 1 felt a special bond with the audience; they had felt what we were saying and later came up and told us how great it was. We had a fifteen minute break and then we were on again for the next show. Again we cried and hugged each other at the end. And then something wonderful happened. We were all in different groups hugging each other, and suddenly we all joined together in one line. We all swayed together gently to the song The Greatest Love of All.” Our last show was not until 7:30 that night. I had to go to work at 3:00. Cherie, another extra and a person I work with, said she felt that we were all best friends. I told her that it was like The Breakfast Club and she agreed. I remember saying It’s like we never knew each other, and then we were all together talking about our problems, you know?” I knew. Soon it was time for our final performance and what a performance! I felt that it was the best of the three. We got a standing ovation from the audience. There was again a lot of tears and hugs We presented Kevin LaRiviere. who had spoken at each show, with a rose. We then got in one long line again, but broke it up as we hugged each other and cried. I wanted to stay. I wanted that moment to last forever Eddie Was Here is now in the past, but for those of us who wdVe a part of it. the production will never be forgotten. Looking back, 1 can’t believe that I didn't want to go just because I didn't have a lead part. It has been the greatest experience of my life. I have gotten to know my fellow cast members so well. I cried with them. I laughed with them, and I felt with them. I realize now that it wasn't just an anti-drug play; it was a play about love and understanding. When I hugged Kevin. I thanked him. We had all become so close because of the play. I probably won’t hang out with some of the cast because we belong to different groups, but I’ll never forget that day. when we were best friends performing a play about a kid who didn’t think he had anyone. Now I know that we all have someone. 103 CLASS IN TEN YEARS FROM NOW Melissa Ackerly will be practicing medicine on the French Riviera while moonlighting as a lifeguard. WE LEAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!! in THE ROAD NOT TAKEN Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long 1 stood And looked down one as far as 1 could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that, the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if 1 should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and 1- 1 took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.
