The Abington High School Green Wave - 1979 With freedom to choose and freedom to live, every moment of each passing day, may we live with love and all that life gives. Keep our chins up and not lose our way. Sheila Johnson We know now it's time for us to grow older, you can feel it in your heart. It's now time for our world to turn colder, and build the future our way from the start. The hours fly by and leave only a trace, of another day which has come to a close . The years go by in their usual grace. The foundation of life still grows. , - ! 3 The Abington High School Green Wave - 1979 1 suppose that I should wish you success. Instead, 1 would much rather wish you something that is harder to achieve - meaning in your life. Meaning is not something that comes to us in a haphazard manner. It is something that you build into your life. It is made up of your past, shared experiences, affections and loyalties, and your own talent. Meaning combines the things you believe in and the values for which you are willing to sacrifice. The ingredients are there. You are the only one who can put them together into that unique pattern that will be your life. Let it be a life that has dignity and meaning for you. Mr. Paul E. Byron Principal 4 The Abington High School Green Wave - 1979 Mr. Paster - We will always remember you for all your friendship and support throughout our years at A.H.S. Although some of us have been trouble to you in the past, we all wish you the best of luck in the future. Mrs. Beaton and Mrs. Powers - We would like to thank you for your limitless energy and enthusi- asm during these, our last years at A.H.S. From the Prom to Gradu- ation , your help enabled us to make our final years successful. 5 The Abington High School Green Wave - 1979 We the editors of the 1979 Green Wave present you with this journal in hopes that it will bring to mind, now and in future years, some of the more memorable times during our years at A.H.S. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Stanton for all his advice and support. We would also like to thank all the staffs and their editors for their help in putting this book together. We would like to wish each member of the senior class all the success and happiness that they deserve. As freshmen we began a search for ourselves. To guide us through this trying year we elected as our class officers Tom, Ruth, Patty, and John, We started the year off at- tempting to show our spirit and enthusiasm by decorating the halls Stumbling into our sophomore year we had gained a considerable amount of confidence, while, at the same time, we moved closer to our goal of becoming upper- classmen . Raising money was the top priority on our agenda. To help us accomplish this, we elected Tom, Cathy, Betsey, and John. One of our most successful projects was a car wash held at Burgertime. Our efforts were duly Freshmen and the gym for our first rally. As the days progressed we had our share of excitement; fire drills, bomb scares, and a walk-out over scabies. Just before Christmas we ordered our class jackets. Unfor- tunately we received them in the spring when it was too hot to wear them. We managed to survive the continual hazing by the upper- Sophomores rewarded as the treasury began to grow. By Thanksgiving we had or- dered our class rings. Finally we belonged, and were a definite part of Abington High. The school gained recognition when the band placed first in the Cherry Blossom Parade, and, suddenly, we were celebrities. Our sophomore year was not all peaceful however. In mid-January frequent fights broke out between the so-called Class classmen and even had some fun of our own at the dances or by just partying on the weekends. By the end of our freshman year we were beginning to discover who we were. But the year was passing quickly; soon we would be sopho- mores stepping up to the second floor. 1 'Jocks'' and ' 'Freaks.'' Luckily most of the issues were soon re - solved and peace was restored. In the spring came baseball and track, with the girls' track team undefeated and becoming league champs for the first time. All too soon the year ended, and we ea- gerly prepared to make the big move up to the third floor; upper- classmen at last! The Abington High School Green Wave β 1979 History Junior year was the beginning of the end of our high school years. Part of the ' 'upper crust'', we began the year with a new admin- istration headed by Mr. Byron, and new class officers headed by Cathy and Terry, joined by (who else?) Betsey and John. Our ex- citement at being upperclassmen and our visions of a carefree year were short-lived as ' 'Lord'' Byron quickly showed that he intended to As seniors we became the ruling class, commanding the respect of the underclassmen. We selected as class officers for this, our final year, Cathy, John, Betsey, and Kevin. The year began as a promising one with the varsity football team defeating both Rockland and Hanover. Soon we received our senior class pictures which caused us to realize what Juniors rule with a dominant hand, Our class settled down somewhat as we worked together at the Christmas Bazaar and paid our dues to help raise money for the prom. As prom time grew near we debated over the theme but when the votes came in we had chosen ' 'Stairway to Heaven''. On May 12th we all flocked to Ridders following the Grand March and by the end of the night Debbie Edgren had been se- Seniors little time was actually left of our years at Abington High. As repre- sentatives of our class we chose Janet Lambert as Miss Abington and Maryann Majenski as Miss D.A.R. Most of our senior year was spent filling out applications, forms, visiting guidance , trying to decide in what direction our lives were headed. Any spare time was devoted to the preparation of the lected to reign as Prom Queen. Our weekend had just begun as parties at Danny's, the beach, and Mary Lou's were yet to come. With the thrill of the prom gone, we had only to look forward to the prestige and power we would in- herit from the graduating seniors. With this in mind we left school for the summer longing for the day when we would return as seniors. yearbook or planning the senior reception. Our graduation, rapidly approacing, will mark the end of a decade. The 80's wdll be a changing and challenging time for us, the class of '79. But we will always reserve a special place in our hearts for the teachers and friends who can never be replaced and the experiences we shared that will never be forgotten. 19 Anne Marie Affleck David M. Their record was 6 wins and 4 losses, but this is not a true indication of the skill and con- tent of this team. Their defense was one of the most potent in the league and held 5 teams score- less. With a few breaks this team would have gone a long way. 92 The Abington High School Green Wave - 1979 93 The Abington High School Green Wave - 1979 Soccer This yearβs Soccer Team rose to new heights as they recorded the best record ever by a Greenwave team. The team was led by Cap- tain and South Shore League All- Star, John Campbell. But their intensity and performance during the season were of the finest kind. Co-Captain Jay McGowan led the team along with other seasoned players such as Rich Delaney and Joe McSharry. Tom Maguire and Tom Burke showed some good tal- ent and excellent effort. Coach Mayhew is very optimistic for the future; the components of an out- standing team are there, they just have to be tuned right. 98 The Abington High School Green Wave - 1979 TTh bingtor Higl Schoo Greei Vav 79 Girls' Basketball The Girls' Basketball team con- tinued to show everyone their quality style of play. They start- ed their season by breaking the long winning streak of Westwood High. Seniors Kevin Hall, Mike Petersen, Paul Funder, and Shawn Murray contributed to the bulk of the scoring. There were many ex- cellent individual displays of hockey by several different play- ers . Many of their games could have gone either way. Congratu- lations are in order to Coach McMann for a job well done. 102 The Abington High School Green Wave - 1979 Baseball The Greenwave Baseball Team will be counting on returning let- termen to lead them to a success- ful season. The team however, has high aspirations for a winning season. 104 The Abington High School Green Wave - 1979 Cross Country This year's Cross Country Teams both experienced some success one way or the other. The Girls Team ran its way to first place in the South Shore League led by Vicki Finlayson, Margaret Cogdell, and Tricia McKenna. Mark Anderson, Mike Peterson, Doug Wight, Brian Jaegar, and Captain Paul Funder paced the Boys Team. 105 The Abington High School Green Wave - 1979 Boys Track The Boys Track Team experienced a rebuilding year but shows poten- tial for the future.
