ABINGTON HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF NINETEEN SEVENTY EIGHT A BING TON, MASSACHUSETTS 02351 Some of the greatest moments of our lives have been here at Abington High School. We hope that in the years to come this book will enable you to recall all the memorable experiences and people you came to know. We would like to thank everyone who helped with the production of this book. Also, we would like to extend our deepest appreciation to Mr. Stanton for his aid and amusing wit which kept us and the yearbook going. We wish you the best of luck in the future and hope that the yearbook will bring back the special times with special people. The Editors: Jane Clawson Cheryl Cashman Betty Nery Adviser: Mr. Stanton 2 Miss Tracy The senior class would like to thank Miss Tracy for all the help and support she has given us during our years at A.H.S. We will always remember her ever-present smile, and we wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors. W Mr. Bryon We also extend a warm welcome to Mr. Byron in his new position as principal of A.H.S. His unbounded en- thusiasm for the school is just one of his contributions to the many memories we have of our high school years. Mrs. Leonard Her smile always brightened the cafeteria, and her presence will be sadly missed by the entire school. 3 During the years following high school graduation, you may look forward to growing in many different dimensions- intellectually, socially and emotionally. Some of this growth will be rewarding and some painful. You will quickly experience one particularly effective stimulus to personal growth: there will be no one to stand between you and the consequences of your actions. I know that you look forward to the challenges of adult life. You will encounter many tests of your stability and personal maturity. By continuing the quest for excellence that you began when you entered school - and I refer to the whole extraordinary variety of intellectual, social, aesthetic, moral, and spiritual excellence Principal: Mr. Paul E. Byron where man seeks and oc- cassional ly achieves-I believe that you can grow to the intellectual and emotional maturity that makes meaningful and lasting moral commitments a possibility. On behalf of the faculty, administration, and entire staff of Abington High School, I wish you a happy and rewarding life that will have dignity and meaning for you. 4 OLDIES BUT GOODIES Assistant Superintendent: Mr. Joseph Potoczak Superintendent: Mr. Chester Millett 6 Mr. Gregory (Dept. We all know it is a year that will pass all too quickly. Soon we will take leave of this school and each other. Most of us were born the year John F. Kennedy was in- augurated. We spent our early childhood growing up in a country which was rapidly changing. Historians now tell us the generation gap peaked in those years. Kent State, assassinations, the women's liberation move- ment, and scandal in Washington marked the sixties and early seventies. But most of us were insulated from those events. While the country endured drastic changes, our lives were fairly secure in small town schools, sports, churches, and with protective parents. We are graduating in more stable times for this coun- try. Ours is a world more settled than that of those stu- dents who left this school ten years ago. And yet, we know each one of us will face difficulties in the years ahead. Those years will hold success for some, failure for others, and average lives for most of us. I wish each one of you the courage, fortitude, and hon- esty to make the best of the years that will follow our graduation from Abington High School. Most Sincerely, Steve Madden 44 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS President- Steve Madden Vice- President-Sara Machlewlcz Treasurer-Katle Lombardi Secretary-Marie Russo 45 Miss D.A.R. Thank you, all the teachers of A.H.S. 66 CLASS HISTORY Freshman Year Our first days of high school were filled with dismay. We were awfully afraid of losing our way. But we soon got over our nervous fidgets Enough to make friends with the kids from St. Bridget's. The upperclassmen we highly respected. Paul, Karen, Brenda, and John were elected. We held a flea market where our old stuff was bought. Our first rally and dance we sure liked alot. That was the year our class jackets were sold. And we proudly wore our green and our gold. Hat Day, Clash Day, and Switch Day were fun. And the 50's day we proudly won. Our class outing and skip day were held by the ocean As we all ran to Nantasket with our tanning lotion. We couldn't wait till June was no more As we gladly left the good old first floor. Sophomore Year We now moved our domain to the second floor, No longer as freshmen but now as sophomores. We elected Paul and Sara, Janine and Dale. With these kids as leaders, we just couldn't fail. That was the rally we should have won But giving trophies to sophomores just isn't done. Our rings of silver and gold we bought. But what we ordered wasn't what some of us got. We loved to party at Arnold's Rock And to this place we often flocked. We had a good time at the Christmas Bazaar With John Morton as St. Nick, the biggest Star. When scabies were thought to be about, We decided that we should all walk out. The fire alarm rang and a bomb scare or two. With excitement like that, the day really flew. We left that June without shedding a tear For we knew we'd be upperclassmen on returning next year. 67 CLASS HISTORY Junior Year We now made our way to the third floor. Being underclassmen was a problem no more! Led by Steve, Sara, Cathy, and Kate We knew this year would be just great. With so many different things to do It seemed to us that the year really flew. Most of us got our licenses at last. The trouble of walking was a thing of our past. We gathered at Park Ave, under the lights. Where we spent our Friday and Saturday nights. A flea market, a dance, a Christmas bazaar Gave us some money, needed to go far. Rallies and prom committees, we had many. Collecting and begging, to save every penny. Our Prom was at Lantana, with If as our theme And the court was picked, with Anita as queen. We travelled to Scusset the very next day. We had so much fun on this 14th of May. Numerous parties were held the year through No matter what, we still carried our brew. Our year soon ended, as we looked toward the fall When we'd be Seniors, Rulers of all! Senior Year Looking over the three years past We sure went through hell to be seniors at last. Senior pictures in summer sure took a lot. Especially during the heat wave — man, was it hot! Class Day in May will show a few stars. We'll tell jokes, tap dance, or sing a few bars. The Reception is planned for the beginning of June, And our friendships are being challenged too soon. The end is near, and so we must part. With tears in our eyes, and love in our hearts. As graduation ends, and we go our own ways We'll always remember our Abington High days. We've just begun, we're the Class of 78 , As our lives go on, there'll be more Golden Greats. 68 ROCK GROUPS French Circle Vice-President: Ann Palopoli Advisor: Mrs. Rosen Treasurer: Jane Clawson President: Cathy Smith Secretary: Jen Barry Math Team Advisor: Mr. DiPietro Math Club Advisor: Mrs. Johnstone Health Careers Club Advisor: Mrs. Powers President: Jane Clawson Vice President: Jennifer Barry Secretary: Ann Palopoli Treasurer: Ann Rabel 70 Ski Club Advisor: Mr. Sawatszky Ecology Club President: Cathy Emery Treasurer: Advisors: Mr. Stone Vice-President: Karen Kennedy Linda Tower Mr. Hart Secretary: Debbie Emery Honor Society Advisor: Mr. Broomfield President: Jennifer Barry Vice-President: Sean Donlan Secretary: Sandra Holbrook Treasurer: Donna Maio 71 Library Aides Advisor: Mrs. Reardon Editors: Brian Wolent Karen Kohr LaBaron Hairdressing School Newspaper Staff Advisor: Mr. Halet Vice-Pres.: Lisa Kelly Secretary: Sara Mackiewicz Treasurer: Janet Robertson Student Council Advisor: Mr. Smith President: Steve Madden Stage Band Advisor: Mr. Karp Literary Staff Editors: Ann Rabel Donna Maio Photography Staff Editor: Marie Russo Secretarial Staff Editor: Sue Mileski Advertising Staff: Editor: Lori Poirier Clubs And Organizations Editors: Cindy Libby Dori Nolan Sports Staff Editors: David Peterson Pat Hagerty MAJORETTES 77 FLAG SQUAD 78 WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS . As we leave we sincerely hope That all we've learned and done, Will help us to understand the world we live in, And help us to better it for others to come. We've sought a new idealism by deciding to change the trend You'll see us walking hand and hand, together both now and then. We won't promise to bring world peace. Or feed all of the starving people. Or finally prove to the hard-headed people that everyone is born equal, We'll probably never find solutions to pollution, hate or poverty- But we'll reach out and perhaps even find That in our hands we've always held the key.
