Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1976 volume:

t 1 Memories light the comers of our minds, Misty water colored memories, of the way we were. Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind, Smiles we gave to each other, For the way we were. Could it be that life was all so simple Or will time rewrite every line? If we had the chance to do it all again Tell me: would we, could we? Memories may be beautiful and yet, What's too painful to remember, We sometimes choose to forget. So it's the laughter, we will remember, Whenever we remember, the way we were. then, just a few memories . . . 2 table of contents Opening 1 Theme 2 Principal's Message 4 Dedication Memoriam 5 Editor's Message 6 Yearbook Staffs 7 Faculty and Administration 9 Senior Section 17 Prom 58 History 62 Senior Class Officers 64 Will 66 Superlatives 68 Underclassmen 73 Clubs and Organizations 79 Sports 89 Ads 111 Closing 140 principal’s message To the Class of 1976: Congratulations to each graduate of the Class of 1976. You have reached an important plateau in your educational plans. Now, you have the necessary credentials to extend your formal educa- tion beyond the secondary level. If formal training is not your immediate goal, be cognizant that education, that is the acquisition of knowledge, begins at birth and ends with the grave. Through reading, work, experience, travel and social contacts you will grow in comprehension, understand- ing, and assuredly in a storehouse of memories. Your yearbook editors have chosen Memories as their theme. During your high school years incidents, some pleasant some unpleasant, will at a future date bring smiles or frowns as you recall escapades perpetrated by your fellow classmates of members of the faculty. Memories recall the past, the good old days, fleeting moments of physical of emotional ex- periences that bring pleasure, pain, shame, or embarrassment. But, the past is gone; the future holds the promise. The past won't be forgotten but the future can be planned. Set goals; Even if you ne- ver attain your goals there will be satisfaction in your pursuit of them. May each of you accumulate pleasant memories as you strive for your place in life. Sincerely, John A. Murray Principal dedication We, the Class of 1976, wish to dedicate our year- book to Mrs. Virginia M. Lind. She has been in the high school for 15 years and we feel she has, through her friendly smile, warm heart, and helping ways, made our years at Abington High more pleasurable. We wish to thank her for all she has done and we hope that through this yearbook she will remember us as fondly as we will remember her. The Class of 1976 in memoriam Everett Hartwell A teacher at A.J.H.S. 1958 to 1975 Christopher Crahan A teacher at A.H.S. 1964 to 1974 5 The noble act which he did, and his greatness, they are not written: for they are many. Consider that he laboured not for himself only, but for all them that seek knowledge. from the editors From our four years at A.H.S. we will all have many memories. Some are good and some are bad, but either way, they have helped us come together as a class. We have made many new friends, cried a little, laughed a lot, but no matter what, these memories will stay with us as each of us goes his separate way. This yearbook could not have been possible without the good times we have shared; which, all too soon, will become memories. We wish to thank our advisor, Mr. Stanton, and our hard working staffs. Without their help, none of this could have been possible. Through this yearbook we hope you will be able to recall all of our memories of our high school years. We thought that being underclassmen wouldn't hurt With officers like Shelly, Liz, Rachael, and Kurt. We bought class jackets, to try to be in, Approval of the upperclassmen, we wanted to win. We all were so nervous at our very first dance, Hoping and praying for a fling at romance. Our mothers and sisters helped us to bake Brownies, cookies, and even some cakes. The First National Store was the setting for this To raise some cash, we hardly could miss. To the music of the juke box we jived in the caf, Afraid to put the dime thinking they might laugh. We waited and waited for the top ten to play But all we heard at lunch was D.O.A. At the rallies we were afraid to show our spirit But we overcame that when we heard, Let's hear it! The end of our freshman year was at hand Our trip to Paragon Park was planned; Our nickles, dimes, and quarters were all soon spent. The rides and arcades was where it all went. We ended the year of '73 A little bit closer.. .hopefully. SOPHOMORE Moving on up to the second floor, Being older didn't seem to be much of a chore, The boys got taller; they finally grew, This urged on romances, some old and some new. Elections were held, some changes were made, Steve and Linda came in, Rachel and Shelly stayed. Our complexions got worse from the candy we sold We could have sworn that chocolate was six months old. We ordered our class rings of silver and gold A stone of any color, the setting would hold. They finally came, we wore them with pride, As for the high prices, we took them in stride. With most of us cold on that wintry March day, The band went to Hawaii for a short stay They went and played music while having great fun, They returned home with tans from the warm tropic sun. We learned how to party, it didn't take long We spent many nights on that Frolio lawn. We pretended to like it, that bad-tasting brew, The older kids liked it, we thought we would too. 'As soon as we saw police headlights scan We'd take off for the bushes; all of us ran. And as for our outing to Sandy Neck Beach, The men in blue suits took our booze out of reach. We really didn't need it, we had fun anyway, For our sophomore year would end in a day. We ended that year of '74 Anticipating our big move up to the third floor. JUNIOR We started right off on the third floor this year, Leaving the bottom two without any tears. Stephen, Rachel, Linda, and Shell Were the officers we chose, we knew they'd do well. Our parties were moved; Sewer Beds to Park Ave, But this couldn't change all the good times we'd have. The lunches got worse, but our stomachs were saved Thanks to the goodies we had so often craved, For the breakfast ladies gave donuts and smiles To keep us from starving all the morning while. The night before t'was early to bed, and to rise At eight o'clock---SAT's; we must be alert, awake, and wise. We collected and saved all our junk for a while With so many of us, we soon had a pile We loaded it up and went to Sue's yard Where we found out making money wasn't so hard. May 23rd, it came oh, so soon, Color My World we chose as our tune. We sweated and toiled for many long hours, To fold, twist, and cut those crepe paper flowers. When finished, our world was so nice and round, But hoisting it up, it crashed to the ground. We decorated, so it hardly looked like a gym, Well, at least, not with the lights turned down real dim. We got into line for the important Grand March, The girl's in long dresses, die boys stiff and starched. Hey Look Me Over, —the song the band played, Left most of us all very shocked and dismayed. Parents and friends all showed up at the scene, As Shelly was chosen as our Prom Queen. Off to Kell's house to party till dawn The breakfast next morning on Shelly's front lawn. We went to the Cape that very same day, Then Billy Smith's cottage, it was quite a long way. But the trip was well worth it, we all had great fun, But our year of '75 was over and done. SENIOR Here we are, seniors, the big kids at last, But we knew this honor would go by all too fast. We voted in Rich, Shelly, Debbie, and Jim, To plan all our fun; the treasury filled to the brim. We planned and worked hard for our Christmas Bazaar, This was the most money we'd made yet by far. Outside the school some of us shouted For inside the building the scabies were scouted. Our pictures came back in the early fall, But in a short time, we had traded them all. Two dances we ran, What Next was the band, We seniors would jive, while the freshmen would stand. The Odds Are Against Us was our Senior Class Play, But the play's early problems soon faded away. Our reception and graduation have arrived all too soon, We will finally leave on the sixth of June. We leave Abington High with fond memories and tears, And 1976 being the best of all years. % 63 senior officers Pres. Rich Kenny; V. Pres. Jim Gilpin; Sec. Debbie Puopolo; Treas. Shelly Ferris. My fourth and final year, I couldn't believe That May twenty-first would be time to leave. Cheering the football team on Saturdays And all of my friends going their separate ways These thoughts have slipped in and out of my mind And hopefully they will all heal in time. Goodbye to the teachers who've helped us along Who threw us from the lav's when we knew we were wrong Good luck to the juniors, they'll soon take our place, The freshmen and sophomores have just entered the race. Sure, we all had some good times together Like playing in gym in twenty-below weather I think of the laughter that we've been through That was the past, but what about the new?
