The best citizens and most responsible adults will be produced by the best high school and under rhe best guidance; good work will be done only where an atmosphere has been created for it. We, the class of I960, have realized the importance of our high school years and wish to remember them as they were. Our attempt has been to capture and preserve in this yearbook the character of Abington High School and its students. Harry G. Stoddard Editor-in-Chief 4 SUPERINTENDENT MR. MILTON C. BLANCHARD : ASS’T. SUPERINTENDENT MR. LEONARD G. PALOPOLI PRINCIPAL A. GIANOULIS Principal's Message e Congratulations Seniors — At this moment you have attained another level in the pattern of life, — you have given twelve years to the search for those fundamental truths and skills so necessary to the individual in his role as a member of a God-fearing, democratic society. Your search, however, is not at an end — indeed, it is just commencing — you will continue to search on higher levels of education and in the larger and more complex world of daily experience until you have grasped sufficient truths to fulfill on a high moral and spiritual plane the obligation of man to man and to society. It is your duty to continue the search for truth begun in these formative years — Your search for truth, then, must continue and endure no matter the sacrifice! And now at this moment, as Principal of Abington High School, and on behalf of the faculty that has guided you in your search over the years, I com- mend you for your achievement and express the hope that happiness, wisdom, and understanding will be your constant companions as you go through life. Pause now and then and recall your days at Abington High School; just as those whom you leave behind will constantly remember and think with deep affection and con- cern of the members of the class of nineteen hundred and sixty. In the words of J. G. Holland, let me Say in parting. God give us men. A time like this demands Strong minds, great hearts, true faith and ready hands! ” GOD BLESS YOU. 5 Mr. John Binney Mrs. Ruth Cameron Miss Geraldine Carsley Miss Catherine Cole SCHOOL Mr. John Murray Mrs. Joanne Oberg Mr. Mario Paolini Mr. Richard Parsons FACULTY 7 Grates persolvere dignas The Class of 1960 proudly dedicates its Green Years” to Richard C. Chev and Janie, that was a tremendous Charles- ton! —When a hundred happy faces ended their first great year at A.H.S. by expectantly boarding the buses for their first class outing at Morton's Park. Bev, remember the underwater swimmer? At the end of the day all returned sunburned, water- logged, but happy. SOPHOMORES DO YOU REMEMBER: —We returned to enter our Sophomore year with renewed spirit, and elected Steve Murphy, Barbara White, Pat Sw-edas, and Carole Cloherty to lead us through the coming year. —The high-stepping girls of our class followed by the much-improved Band, led by Mr. Smith, brightened the football field with the green and white of their snappy uniforms, and our big foot- ball bonfire that was dampened by rain — and a loss the next day. —Our class showed its superiority on the football field with eight lettermen on the team, more than any other class. —Mrs. Coogan and her open-book tests. —Carole Cloherty's big girl ask boy Halloween Party, another desperate move by our girls! —The flashing sword of Zorro left its mark on A.H.S. —Although Jack McDermott, disc jockey for the evening, was late, keeping with the tradition of our class, the Sophomore Hop was not the usual flop. —The hilarious antics of Mr. Divoll's Sophomore boys’ English class at our last assembly. —The class outing, once again at Morton’s Park, went over smoothly except for a few minor mishaps. Right Charlie, and DK? JUNIORS DO YOU REMEMBER: —To lead us through the trials and tribulations of our hectic Junior year we elected Steve Murphy, Barbara White, Pat Swedas, and Pat Donovan as officers. —A cavalcade of cars streaked to Rockland in a spirit of revenge to uphold the honor of Abing- ton High. —The swinging parties our class held at the home of Billy Cox, a lowly classman. —The students of Abington High School made their TV debut on Boston Ballroom, but to our dismay no talent scouts were tuned in! —Reilly’s New Year’s Eve Party where — once again — at midnight the girls of our class took the initiative. —Our class in another way showed its intelligence and superiority — alone we had the responsibility of selecting and designing a school ring, with the help and assistance of Mr. Samuel Gregory. —The bold, brazen boys of our class bombarded rhe Bridgewater rally with their bright red chinos. —After weeks of planning and preparation, the Junior class staged the momentous, tremendous, stupendous Prom,, Soiree Parisienne”, whose decorations were matched only by the beauty of our queen. Miss Carole Cloherty, and her two attendants — Miss Alta LaPointe and Miss Sheila Harkins. —Our class once more lost teachers and friends: Mr. Michel, Mr. Elias, and Mr. Ronald Parsons. —To enliven our parties we had the cool sounds and swinging music of our own Blue Knights. —Our class was singled out for the outstanding performance of one of its members, Harry Stod- dard, who won a Boston newspaper contest over entries from the New England Area. —The white toreadored clowns of our class clowned rhemselves into ten hours detention on the last day of school. —Our cancelled class outing was nevertheless held by a few brave souls at Nantasket Beach, where one courageous football star, with cigar in mouth, 78 took a dip in the below-freezing water. Brr! Right Jack? SENIORS DO YOU REMEMBER: —At last we were the SUPREME Seniors, and to guide us through this, our last and best year, we elected Steve Murphy, Barbara White, Pat Swedas, and Carole Cloherty as officers. —Our peppy cheerleaders inspired our spirited football and basketball teams to almost-victory. Although our teams were not undefeated, they nevertheless were good teams and displayed throughout their playing the all important qual- ities of sportsmanship and fair play. —The pa jama-clad girls of our class visited the laundromats in the wee hours of the morning during their all night gatherings. —The homes of Nancy Bartlett and Judy Gould provided the meeting places for the first of our whirl of Senior parties. —Kruschev's surprise visit to AHS, and the Whit- man football squad — two of our terrific senior rallies. —The food strike when the boys carried lunch- bags to school! —Once again, under the guidance of Mr. Contardi, the Senior class displayed its renowned excellence and superiority in the writing of a constitution for the Student Council, making it an important and active organization at A. H. S. —Dancing to the music of the Four Notes, we all had a great time at the Snowstorm , our gaily decorated Winter Carnival , which (continuing the tradition of our r-e-a-l-l-y big class), was an overwhelming success! —Our whirl of parties continued through the February vacation, when we had one almost every night. At White's and Reill's parties the Blue Knights appeared to really shake the rafters. —We sadly bade a fond farewell to our esteemed and beloved principal, Mr. John Gianoulis, whose aid, assistance, and advice were invaluable to each of us throughout our years at Abington High School. —Our terrific class play, Onions In The Stew , when the scenery toppled over and Claude was his best. Plus the merry cast parties at Sue's and Nancy’s where congratulation kisses high- lighted the evening! —The couples only parties at Linda Bolles' house when everyone assumed a weird beatnick atti- tude. That was pretty good poetry, Gary! What did you do with the Chanel No. 5. Herm? WE ARE NOW LOOKING FORWARD TO: —All our Senior Activities: the Banquet, Reception. Commencement, and the innumerable others associated with Graduation. Our Senior year has been but the culmination of four wonderful years at Abington High School. It is with many fond backward glances at these years that we hopefully set forth into the world as proud graduates. 79 JOHN NEW60RN MARy £(i-Ly tt?S C SOE REOfCAN EDNJA BOWSER Afost MAseA eyo s Sfiy£MuSpHV R T swedas Most Versatile CAROLE ClOHfffty MARY-3AWE CARUSO 0|jx aRIFFlW vS?
