The Mr. and Miss Abingdon High School contest was sponsored for tire first time this year by the Beacon Staff. A committee of teachers nominated six Senior boys and six Senior girls. From this group the student body elected Mr. and Miss Abingdon High School. For the past five years at A. H, S. , one boy has stood out on the football field, on the basketball court, in track, on the baseball field, in music, in forensics, and in clubs. He has displayed outstanding qualities of leadership working to accomplish all that is humanly possible for one school. He has become a symbol of the spirit and aims of Abingdon High School. Therefore it is fitting that James Gail Rut¬ ledge be the first Mr. Abingdon High School. Seldom in life does one meet a person with the character, personality, good sportsmanship, intellec¬ tuality, and popularity of this girl. She has been a friend and acquaintance of all the students at A. H. S. As a class and club leader, cheerleader, and editor, she has indeed reached up to the Sky. Therefore it is an honor and distinction to name Judith Anne Blevins the first Miss Abingdon High School. Not everyone can be a Thomas Edison. However, every trained, dedicated graduate can anticipate a full measure of our society’s rewards.
