Day of Hope It was Sunday, December 13, 1959 . . . less than two years after the ground was broken for the new high school . . . and the group assembled in the auditorium had come to participate in the dedication of the school. As the music of the blue and gold uniformed band filled the auditorium, it seemed a fitting prelude to the dedication of this spacious new school with its many advantages never before available in Washington County. Here is a modern school, symbolizing a new hope for Washington Countians in the realization that every young person desiring an education now can have the best. If we work upon marble, it will perish; if on brass, time will efface it; if we rear temples, they will crumble into dust; but if we work upon immortal minds, and imbue them with principles, with the just fear of God and love of our fellow-men, we engrave on those tablets something that will bright¬ en to all eternity.” Mrs. Robert Stiles and Mr. J. T. Hayter accept the new building from Mr. D. R. Beeson. Mr. E. B. Stanley, Superintend¬ ent of Washington County Schools, presided. Mr. W. N. Neff, president of State Board of Education in Virginia, and a citizen of Abingdon, was one of the speakers. 4
