Adminisfrafivn ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ICE C. HUMPHREY B. A., M. A. As I sit today at old desk Number 40 in the House ot Representatives at your State Capitol in Austin, my thoughts are turned to you, the tine young stu- dents ot Abilene High School, and I crave deeply to send something more than the formal communi- cation which the FLASHLIGHT statt invites me to send each year. Many ot you have stopped me in the halls, called me on the telephone, greeted me out in town, or patiently listened to me in the audi- torium. Our American Democracy depends on each of us learning and practicing the lessons of obedience to law, both the natural and man-made law. Obedi- ence is the core ot character. All high character depends upon inward obedience to moral law. My one supreme desire is for each ot you to be the loyal, obedient, and true American citizen which your country, school, and triends expect you to be. Sincerely your friend, IOE C. HUMPHREY

'11 fldminisfrafivu MRS. EDITH C. SMITH, B. A., STUDENT COUNSELOR Iam not so concerned to prove myself right as to be so. Trollope in these words sets a standard that we may well take for our own as we make the many decisions required from every citizen in a world at war. Whether to volunteer or wait to be drafted, whether to labor on a farm growing food for home and for lend-lease, or in a factory producing guns, planes, or chem- icals, whether to have a party or make surgical dressings, how to apportion income among food, clothing, entertainment, and Bonds and Stamps- all these are problems forced on you, students of Abilene High School, in this momentous year of l943. May you call to your aid moral courage, strength of character, power of endurance, and forsaking all selfishness, may you be led by your best inward convictions and be tried only in the court of your own conscience. Sincerely yours, EDITH C. SMITH

Adminisfrafiau ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL D. B. 'VVEATI-IERBY, B. A., M. A. As the work of this year has progressed, I have observed repeatedly the general atti tude of the majority of our high school students, and it is indeed gratifying that proper and splendid consideration of responsibility toward war conditions have been shown. Seri ousness has prevailed, and yet ability to relax has been maintained. All along there has been strong evidence of willingness to co-operate and to become prepared mentally and physically. Occasionally we may observe some unworthy ef- forts of the careless and irresponsible, but the ref sponse toward corrective measures by the true and tried majority only serves to strengthen the long- held faith that l have had in the youth of our entire nation. To glance forward, we would all judge that the duties of world citizenship that are to be placed on the shoulders of our high school students of today are unusually heavy. Surely joys and sorrows alike are to be shared in the performance of these. Sin- cerity, diligence, and perseverance in all efforts will be necessary. lt is my hope that this war-torn world may emerge from this conflict a far better place in which to liveg that the privileges and pleasures of democratic living may be granted to all. I would extend to our youth the most sincere wishes for glorious success in efforts to stop totalitarianism and rebuild to a civilization that would know no such horrors as those of war. Sincerely yours, DUN B. WEATHERBY
