'11 fldminisfrafivu MRS. EDITH C. SMITH, B. A., STUDENT COUNSELOR Iam not so concerned to prove myself right as to be so. Trollope in these words sets a standard that we may well take for our own as we make the many decisions required from every citizen in a world at war. Whether to volunteer or wait to be drafted, whether to labor on a farm growing food for home and for lend-lease, or in a factory producing guns, planes, or chem- icals, whether to have a party or make surgical dressings, how to apportion income among food, clothing, entertainment, and Bonds and Stamps- all these are problems forced on you, students of Abilene High School, in this momentous year of l943. May you call to your aid moral courage, strength of character, power of endurance, and forsaking all selfishness, may you be led by your best inward convictions and be tried only in the court of your own conscience. Sincerely yours, EDITH C. SMITH

,Adminisfrafim PRINCIPAL I-I. S. FATI-IERREE, B. A. In its moment of supreme crisis our country has asked of every citizen his utmost con- tribution ot preserve our nation. It has asked that able-bodied men of certain age man the battle front that other men and women form an adequate staff for the production front, and that all civilians maintain a home front, strong in morale for the crisis and in citizenship building for the future. In this picture of total mobilization, you young men and Women of Abilene High School have carried on in a very concrete Way. You have increased your drive for educational preparation by intensifying your studies and by wise choice of preparatory sub- jects. You have aligned yourselves with that unit of the Victory Corps in which you can best serve your country. You have organized and carried on an excellent physical fitness program. You have given hours of your time to Red Cross, bandage rolling, making of afghans, aiding in registration programs, serving in Home Defense work, present- ing programs for soldiers and USO units. You have contributed of your time and monev to salvage drives, War Stamp and Bond sales, USO, and other needed War Work. May your country find you ever Willing and pre- pared to give the maximum service which lies with- in your power and your country's need. Yours sincerely, I-IILLIARD S. FATHERREE

Adminisfrafivn ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ICE C. HUMPHREY B. A., M. A. As I sit today at old desk Number 40 in the House ot Representatives at your State Capitol in Austin, my thoughts are turned to you, the tine young stu- dents ot Abilene High School, and I crave deeply to send something more than the formal communi- cation which the FLASHLIGHT statt invites me to send each year. Many ot you have stopped me in the halls, called me on the telephone, greeted me out in town, or patiently listened to me in the audi- torium. Our American Democracy depends on each of us learning and practicing the lessons of obedience to law, both the natural and man-made law. Obedi- ence is the core ot character. All high character depends upon inward obedience to moral law. My one supreme desire is for each ot you to be the loyal, obedient, and true American citizen which your country, school, and triends expect you to be. Sincerely your friend, IOE C. HUMPHREY
