To the Class of 1943: No doubt many of you seniors in recent weeks have been taking stock- thinking of the training received in high school that will fit you for a place of usefulness in a world at war. At first thoughtjyour assets may appear to be few-a fair knowledge of English, a few historical facts and dates, a su- perficial knowledge of mathematics and science, perhaps the ability to type, and write shorthand, and at least a speaking acquaintance with numerous other subjects of doubtful practical value to the young person engaged in war work. Meager though your knowledge may be, you are well equip- ped if you have learned to apply yourself diligently to the task assigned, if you are strong physically, sound morally, and alert mentally. It has asked that able-bodied men of certain age man the battle front that other men and women form an adequate staff for the production front, and that all civilians maintain a home front, strong in morale for the crisis and in citizenship building for the future. In this picture of total mobilization, you young men and Women of Abilene High School have carried on in a very concrete Way. You have increased your drive for educational preparation by intensifying your studies and by wise choice of preparatory sub- jects. You have aligned yourselves with that unit of the Victory Corps in which you can best serve your country. You have organized and carried on an excellent physical fitness program. You have given hours of your time to Red Cross, bandage rolling, making of afghans, aiding in registration programs, serving in Home Defense work, present- ing programs for soldiers and USO units. You have contributed of your time and monev to salvage drives, War Stamp and Bond sales, USO, and other needed War Work.
