The Eagles, capitalizing on first-minute breaks, scored two touchdowns in the first five minutes of play, both counters coming as di- rect results of Steer fumbles. Then Big Spring, on their own sixteen-yard line, fourth down and eight to go for a first, thrilled the football fans when they called a run that netted them 54 yards. A few minutes later Big Spring smashed over for a touchdown. But Abilene came back strong with Doss's interception of a Big Spring aerial, which resulted in a touchdown. This victory assured Abilene at least a tie for the Oil Belt Championship, San Angelo being the only remaining contender. Before a Thanksgiving throng of football fans, the revenge-bent band of San An- gelo Bobcats forced their way to a 12-7 victory over the Abilene Eagles on November 25. With grim determination to avenge last year's defeat, the Bobcats clawed the Warbirds from the list of unbeaten, untied to a first place deadlock with Stephen- ville for the Oil Belt Championship. Because of a more imposing record, Abilene was awarded the championship by the District Committee meeting in Houston the next week. A field goal by El Paso proved too large a margin for Abilene to overcome, and Austin High of El Paso was the Bi-district winner at Abilene on Friday, December 3. The lightness in weight of the opponents lured the Warbirds into a sense of false se- curity that resulted in an Eagle defeat. Finishing their football career in high school with a brilliant performance were the following lettermen: B. H. Hughes, lames Beam, Pete Simpson, I. T. Bell, Tommy Proctor, Lilius Virden, Zolus Motley, A. K. Doss, P. H. Hill, and Lester Dorton. Coming back to uphold Abilene traditions next year are the remaining lettermen: Charles lones, Boland McAdams, Ellis lones, Dub Sibley, Raymond Chambers, and Clayton Leach. lt is a sincere wish of the Flashlight that Abilene may have a bigger and better team next year with more of the old Abilene spirit. CGACH MILLER P. H. HILL Guard P. H. Hill is what may be called an alleround athlete, Isle proved himself to be invaluable to the fcotlrall squad when footliall was in season: then for three years he lettered on the basketball squad, besides serving as captain of the same organization for the post two years. Hill has been out for every sport offered except tennis, and he declares that only lack ot time prevents him from entering this sport. t sz s I f P. I-I. HILL Captain CGACH HQWARD L. MILLER Coach Miller has done outstanding work this year with the basketball squad. Through his efforts Abilene's Blackshirts have developed into one of the finest teams Abilene has ever seen. The Eagles won the district title without the loss of a game, this being the first time Abilene has won district since l93O. Triumphant through regional, the Eagles advanced to State, where they were defeated in the finals by Woodrow Wilson of Dallas. Mr. Miller is well liked by all his play- ers, and their Willingness to work hard and the inspiration afforded by their coach has been a large help to the War- birds. Certainly Coach Miller has proved himself a large asset to Abilene High School. ELTON HAILEY Forward Elton Hailey is better known as a soft ball player, but for the past three years Le has received a letter in basketball. Last year he was highfpoint man with a total of 167 points, He carned the same honor this season with a total of 296 points, Besides his records in sports, Hailey is very proficient as a scholar. Ho is well liked for his good nature, friendly character, and honest achievements. Htl ELTON HAILEY High Point Man Page 98
