The Eagles, capitalizing on first-minute breaks, scored two touchdowns in the first five minutes of play, both counters coming as di- rect results of Steer fumbles. Then Big Spring, on their own sixteen-yard line, fourth down and eight to go for a first, thrilled the football fans when they called a run that netted them 54 yards. A few minutes later Big Spring smashed over for a touchdown. But Abilene came back strong with Doss's interception of a Big Spring aerial, which resulted in a touchdown. This victory assured Abilene at least a tie for the Oil Belt Championship, San Angelo being the only remaining contender. Before a Thanksgiving throng of football fans, the revenge-bent band of San An- gelo Bobcats forced their way to a 12-7 victory over the Abilene Eagles on November 25. With grim determination to avenge last year's defeat, the Bobcats clawed the Warbirds from the list of unbeaten, untied to a first place deadlock with Stephen- ville for the Oil Belt Championship. Because of a more imposing record, Abilene was awarded the championship by the District Committee meeting in Houston the next week. A field goal by El Paso proved too large a margin for Abilene to overcome, and Austin High of El Paso was the Bi-district winner at Abilene on Friday, December 3. The lightness in weight of the opponents lured the Warbirds into a sense of false se- curity that resulted in an Eagle defeat. Finishing their football career in high school with a brilliant performance were the following lettermen: B. H. Hughes, lames Beam, Pete Simpson, I. T. Bell, Tommy Proctor, Lilius Virden, Zolus Motley, A. K. Doss, P. H. Hill, and Lester Dorton. Coming back to uphold Abilene traditions next year are the remaining lettermen: Charles lones, Boland McAdams, Ellis lones, Dub Sibley, Raymond Chambers, and Clayton Leach. lt is a sincere wish of the Flashlight that Abilene may have a bigger and better team next year with more of the old Abilene spirit. In the first quarter the Buclcies fumbled on their own I6-yard line. Capitalizing on this break, the Eagles after four line plays gained a first dawn. Then with machineflilze precisian the Warlprrds carried the pigslcin over far their first caunter, For the next three quarters the Wrirrliirds looked sickf an illness caused by the fact that the Buclzies with beautiful passes and line plays camped an the Eagle goal line. Ear three quarters the struggling group of players roflzed Lael: and forth but always deep in Eagle territory. In spite of their powerful efforts, the Eu-tlzies Q-:fuld not break through that stubborn Warhird defense. At last in the final quarter, growing encauraged lgry the fact that the Buclzie eleven was alvviausly tiring, the Eagles started Cllflillltj again.
