The March of Civilization 5 . Before our eyes the panorama marches! We see all nations and all knowledge good. Grim Egypt with its stern, forbidding aspect And awfulness and silence, from the darkness Emerged from savagery--the first great nation, Cradle of the earth's first civilizationg While likewise in the East, man sought for knowledge, And from the desert sprang the Babylonians. Geometry, astronomy were studied S Libraries built, and laws-they rivaled Egypt. These two great powers thundering through the ages Dispelled the mists of ignorance and darkness, Then in its true' perfection and its glory The splendid nation of the Greeks arose T 0 reach the heights of excellence and beauty K The world despairs to equal their achievementsj. From this fair nation Rome obtained its grandeur And gave to all the world its civilization. But, from the North, where still the dark mists hovered The Goths-Alaric, Huns-Attila, Vandals, Franks, Burgundians, Germans from the fog-lands Sacked Rome, destroyed that mighty civilization, And leveled all her treasures to the ground. Four centuries of darkness then descended, While races struggled to build up their nations To take the place of what had been destroyed. Then from the countries soon emerged strong leaders- Charles the Great, King Alfred, Barbarossa- These mighty men rose up to lead the people. The nations grew and prospered, dispelled ignorance, The rise of Spain was marked by brilliant conquests, And in the West a grand new world was gained. Close rivalry between the various kingdoms To seize far lands and thus expand their empires, Resulted in a new, great, glorious country Of enterprise, of conquest and achievement. America, this young and vigorous nation, Became the greatest empire of the world. -JACK MARTIN
