Superintendent Wall looked up from his desk. hflome in, said he. The superintendents feeling at the sight of his visitor was one of mingled interest and amusement. The intruder was just a boy. perhaps seventeen years old. His trousers showed signs of having once been black. but were now a faded blue. adorned here and there with a plentiful patch. His shoes. through which. in spite of their wearerls efforts. pro- truded a big toe. seemed loath to part with the last bit of evidence which would prove them to have been tan. in some age long past. At Superintendent YVall's scrutinizing gaze. the youth began shifting uneasily from one foot to the other. holding on to his old. black hat with a vice-like grip. n'Er-ah-is this Mr. IVall? he inquired. hesitatingly. Mr. Yvall felt an almost uncontrollable desire to laugh. but some- thing in the youthis voice restrained him. No one would have accused Ned Jamison of being handsome. yet there was something about his voice and his eyes that made one look twice: that gripped oneis attention. :'Young man. is there something I can do for you? asked the super- intendent. Yes sir. was the reply. You see. sir. I want to go to school. He motioned toward his tattered clothing. c'Look at me. sir.
