Some of them seem merely to shuffle through the sand, losing themselves in a confu- sion of turns and retracingswhile others mark firm paths toward high but still-distant goals, yet all are intermingled in a maze of footprints that tell, perhaps more vividly than words, the story of the lives and activities of the people on the Mill. When the blustering winds of summer descend to shift and swirl the sands about the Hill, traces of bur footprints will vanish silently, leaving it nearly smooth for the minds and feet that are to follow: but we know that neither wind nor sand nor any element of Zirne can erase the impressions of... .
