Text from Pages 1 - 191 of the 1936 volume:

The PRICKLY PEAR 1936 FOREWORD Abilene Christian College is in a stage of transformation. Improvement and expansion herald the reception of the greater college. Many structural changes in the interest of the future are already appearing. The “Prickly Pear” is not concerned with the College of the future, but rather does it fervidly endeavor to preserve within its pages the vitalized pas- toral beauty of the present College. ’Tis said of old masterpieces that age gives to them a mellowness which the human hand cannot duplicate; thus making them doubly valuable. So let it be with this “1936 Pricklv Pear”. Let the invisible finger of time weave about the faces and places pictured herein a magic web so that in some distant day they will revive memories; rich and mellow mem- ories; memories of youthful life and activity. THE PRICKLY PEAR OF 1936 Published by the Senior Class of Abilene Christian College _Abilene :: :: :: ’Toexas HOMER UTLEY JAMES STAGGS BUSINESS MANAGER To Dr. Walter H. Adams, the Dean of Students, the students have gone with their problems and found him ever willing to make their problems his. His personal interest in each boy and girl in our every worthy effort has been a source of encouragement and in- spiration to each and every student in Abilene Christian College. We love our Dean because of his everlasting willingness to solve our problems. His office door is never closed to the most humble of our group, and his hand is never slow to serve. It is with pride and honor on our part, that we do affectionately dedicate this “1936 Prickly Pear” to our beloved Dean. DEDICATION PICTORIAL A. C. C. Cox, President The President of Abilene Christian College is entrusted by the Board of Education with the administration of the educa- tional affairs of the college. It is his duty to keep in touch with the development of educational ideas and policies and to make appropriate recommendations to the Board of Education in re- gard thereto. He is the medium of communication between the College and the Board. In our President, we have a man whose untiring efforts on our campus have made true the realization of a large and more progressive institution. Because of his cooperation in all that would make for the improving of the college, and because of the fact that he has set as his goal only the highest and noblest phases of campus life, the students have found this year a deeper happi- ness in both their intellectual pursuits and in their social life. Just before the last pages are sent in to the printer, we must pause here to bid a reluctant good-bye to a task that has been an ordeal and a pleasure, never to be erased from our memory. It has burned itself into our very heart and soul. We have lived the 1936 Prickly Pear; every minute of the day and night has found the thoughts of this yearbook somewhere in our consciousness. We give this Prickly Pear to you and hope that it may have a significance which will ripen as the years pass by; we have worked with an eye to the future, and we hope only to have succeeded in helping you to remember. Our purpose has been to produce a publication that will perpetuate the memories of life this year here at A. C. C. We want to thank those who have helped to compile this vol- ume. Faced with the prospects of absolutely no reward for their efforts, yet always ready and willing to work, we wish to thank the following: Batsell Barrett Baxter, Dorothy Dabbs, Buna Edwards, Charles Eudaly, Howard Garner, Otis Garner, Wanda Mayfield, Hope Reed, Eloise Reynolds, Harold Showalter, Johnnie Lee Stovall, Jimmie Taggart, Ruth Iris White, and Arlene Small. To the members of the staff not mentioned, and to Abilene Printing Company, Paramount Studios, Southwestern Engraving Company and the S. K. Smith Cover Company, we wish to extend our deepest gratitude. We have made the 1936 Prickly Pear for you and have given all gladly. We sincerely hope it meets with your approval. —HOMER UTLEY —JIMMIE STAGGS. TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT.............. The Optimist practically ripped its pants with its foul Cat Purrs column this year. Wilma Kendrick hasn’t seen her feet since her Freshman year. The social clubs that passed up Crystal Blanton missed a darn swell gal. Dora Frances Harvey is really in love with Mack Mead. The lounges in Zellner are more comfortable than the back seat of a Ford. Brian McKinzie isn’t half the Fashion Park model that he thinks he is. Vivian Day is one of the girls you ought to know. Austin Parrish showed darned good judgment when he gave Ruth Iris White the air. Mary Alice Leathers and “Mose” McCook can stand more of each other than any other couple we know. Some students on the campus are against the social clubs. Some students on the campus are against anything. HARVEY CLARK INSURANCE This new modern library building is to have in it space to accommodate 300 readers at one time. It is to have shelving space for at least 100,000 volumes. It is to have a special religious library room, a museum, a small auditorium that will seat approximately 300 peo- ple, offices and probably a few class rooms. This building is to be most interesting in many par- ticulars: FIRST, on stone and marble slabs throughout the building scripture quotations and others emphasizing the importance of God’s Word will be seen. SECOND, in the museum will be found old relics, antiques, pic- tures, carvings, and especially the old “bean Bell”. THIRD, in the religious library room we will gather many rare and ancient copies of God’s Word, commen- taries, books of sermons, tracts, biographies, of outstand- ing servants of the Master, and pictures of church leaders. We want here the names and addresses of every con- tributor to this building and the biography and some two or three sermon outlines of preachers of God’s Word, living or dead. Every student, ex-student, and every friend of A. C. C. is anxious to see the building pictured here become a realitv. The students and ex-students more than anyone else know how much we need better library facilities for “our school.” All of us know, too, that we want to keep the Bible prominent in A. C. C. We want to exalt it above everything else. We want to stress the importance of PREACHING and TEACHING God’s Word. During this good year—the Texas Centennial—we want to raise at least $125,000 to make this building a reality by 1937-’38 session. It will require 1250 people to give or raise $100 each to make this possible. It CAN be done! It is BEING done! YOUR help is needed. Will you not buy one of the Memorial certifi- cates or at least sponsor one? For further details, write 0. M. Reynolds or James F. Cox, A. C. C., Abilene, Texas.
