Three local members received their State Farmer degrees. They were Grady Shuey, Tom Richerson, and Russell Windham. While in Houston, the students went touring. One day the group swam at a Galveston Beach, Ranae McKinney represented AHS and the South Plains Electric Coo erative during the Government-in-Action Youth Tour to Washington D.C., in lune. While there, Ranae shook hands with President Iimmy Carter. The group toured many points of interest in Washington. Patrick Lewis, Movie Star! Abernathy's own Patrick Lewis auditioned for a made-for-TV movie. He was selected for a role in the film The Acorn People, In the fall, Patrick, along with counselor David Sharp, was flown to Dallas for the filming. After a few days, Mr. Sharp returned, and Patrick remained in Dallas with his mother while the movie was filmed. Patrick layed the role of Stuart. In lanuary, the cast members of the movie were honoredblguests of the Texas Legislature. The academically-superior students had the principles of the organization explained to them before they were sworn in. NHS membership is a coveted honor at Abernathy High School. 6 Fi l7, i lon Mark Fulton was selected for the National Band of the Future Farmers of America. He auditioned by sending a taped recording of selected music to the judges. The band performed at the National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Missouri, in November. tt
