Walter Howe came to Abbot in 1928, at which time he estab- lished residence in Andover as a near neighbor of the school. His musical activities increased rapidly, for at this time he became Festival organist of the widely-known Worcester Musical Festival in addition to his duties as choral conductor of the annual summer series at Chautauqua, New York. In 1933, he became the Festival ' s associate conductor and manager, and two years later became conductor of the Worcester Philharmonic Orchestra. Mr. Howe was named the Festi- val music director in 1944, and was known for his work as a composer. As director of Choral and Fidelio, Mr. Howe was one of the teachers who came in contact with every Abbot girl and every Abbot girl held a warm affection for him. We loved him for his great interest in our success, for the simplicity with which he carried his own achievements, for his friendliness and humor, and for his great gift for putting music into our lives both as an inspiration and as a useful possession. Generations of Abbot girls join us, the Class of 1949. in paying this tribute to our beloved teacher and friend. Walter Edward Howe. 1 017
