This efficient worker was promoted on Oct. 30, 1969, to a secretarial post I at AHS, a job she mastered single-handedly for several years until school growth I justified hiring front office assistance. A second secretary and a bookkeeper hired I since agree that this fine lady is the backbone of that department. And she has been more than a secretary to the AHS community. She is a I best friend and consultant to the administration and staff, a willing helper to the faculty, and a mother to student office workers and the student body in Mrs. Mildred Guidry general. I In appreciation of the cooperation, the love, the compassion, and the dedication this grand lady has given AHS, the staff, with respect and admiration, dedicates this 1980 edition of the Wildcat to Mrs. Mildred Guidry. 3 We’re always on the go . . 5 In the Halls 7 In the Classrooms 8 In the Auditorium . . . 10 In the Gymnasium ... 11 In the Parking Lot . . . 12 13 Moving . . . Prince Vernon Johnson, Footman John Trahan, and Rep. Sam Theriot agree. Plaque for Photographer “Without him, what?” is a question all AHS yearbook staffs ask. To show appreciation. Miss Bennie Hebert presents to Mr. Godfrey Bergeron a plaque for services and favors to the school. A Moment of Disbelief Romy Nunez experienced that feeling when named most beautiful but Rep. Sam Theriot who presented her trophy and Prince Vernon Johnson waiting to crown her, always believed. The Pageant Stage A royal atmosphere prevailed during the pageant with Mrs. Betty Thibodeaux, the abdicating queen; Mr. Frenchy Thibodeaux, her consort; and Mr. Vernon Johnson, the prince, acting as judges, Footman John Trahan and Rep. Sam Theriot waiting to hear the names of finalists. A Peck of Gratitude First Beauty Romy Nunez accepts her trophy from Rep. Sam Theriot, thanking him with a little kiss, as Prince Vernon Johnson and Footman John Trahan watch. Excited Angela Angela LeBlanc grabs for her trophy from Prince Vernon Johnson and runs to meet the other finalists before someone tells her that her second place win is only a dream. Softball • Caroline Pedigo is shown in that confident outfield stance which prevented many runs this term and which won her a position on the all-district team. • Though Clarissa Callahan switched position from infield to pitcher, it was her infield performance that won her an all-district mention. • The runner will never reach base safe if the ball is thrown right, for Monique Adams' glove was always ready for the catch that would assure a man out. Softball A 4-4 District Record • Kala Duhon shows her fielding ability at shortstop during a successful season. • Caroline Pedigo, an all-district quality player in outfield, enjoyed a fantastic season. • Catcher Luquita Vallery shows her bravery behind the plate as Tracy Suire demonstrates her good stance for hitting. Tennis w • Ron Sonnier shows the typical form and the needed extension to return the ball over the net. The tennis team this term included Kevin Ledet, Brian Broussard, Michael Landry, Shannon Broussard, Daniel Hebert, Ron Sonnier, Karl Trahan, Paul Ledet, John Frederick, and their devoted coach, Ms. Hope Mazzeno. Paul Ledet smiles with his thumb up, always signaling a good serve. Both Serious and Humorous Sides There are both serious and humorous sides to the sport of tennis, Paul Ledet showing a humorous acknowledgeme of achievement, Michael Landry being serious with a return, Karl Trahan being humorous with words but serio with action, Daniel Hebert being only serious, Ron Sonnier being apprehensive, and again Daniel Hebert showii the serious stance of it all. Actually, these players have given tennis a position among AHS sports. After all, he had given twenty-nine and one-half years to classroom experience, three years to assistant principal chores, and fifteen years to work with student teachers. All this after his own years as a student during which time he earned his bachelor of science degree in Mathematics and Social Studies and his master’s degree in Administration and Supervision at USL. With this, he has given 16 years of extracurricular service and all but three years of teaching to AHS. This enviable record qualifies any person for retirement, so with heavy hearts and sincere wishes for health and happi- ness, we wish our friend many happy years at his favorite hobby—gardening. Retirement Mrs. Maudry Deliphose Osteomyelitis of the right femur has been the physical disability which Mrs. Maudry Deliphose knew someday would call for indefinite rest and recuperation. And the respected teacher had to embark on that assignment during this term. She was granted medical retirement. Despite this handicap, she began her teaching chores in 1962, giving five years of her talents to Texas, the remainder to Acadiana, and the past eight years to AHS. Mrs. Deliphose claims that AHS gave her love and understanding, an experience for which she will always be grateful. Upon her retirement, AHS continues that love and understanding and wishes for her much joy and comfort in the loving company of her family and friends. 261 Retirement TOb When a friend in both education and government says he must leave one to dedicate himself to the other so he can continue to serve mankind, one can only say thanks and wish him continued happiness and success. Mr. Cecil Picard is leaving 20 years as a teacher, principal, and consultant to serve his constituents as a representative-become- sena- tor. We’ll miss him at AHS, but we feel he’ll help us as best he can in Baton Rouge. With respect for his decision, the AHS community wishes him the best. Mr. Cecil J. Picard . . . devoted and concerned. Retirement Miss Mary Joyce Trahan this term after teaching 20 years at This lady retired at the close of AHS. She began in 1960 teach- ing first in Speech, English, and Civics areas and has spent the past 16 years teaching American History. During retirement. Miss Mary Joyce Trahan plans to operate a craft and gift shop, an outlet for her hobbies at needlepoint, em- broidering, knitting, and ceramics. Surely the AHS community will miss the once-familiar sight of Miss Mary Joyce sitting at her duty station with her needlework. Surely, the school community wishes her success in her future endeavors with a feeling that things are bound to be different in her old Room 113 American History classroom. 262 Mrs. Jackie Langlinais . . . from six years in the social studies classrooms to accept an appointment and advancement to a parish supervisory post. . . . from two years as a teacher of mathematics to what she has termed as an obligation to her husband and family as a full-time homemaker. . . . from five years as teacher and coach to a position with an area oil firm in which he has found what he terms as better working conditions and salary to guarantee his family a better financial base. Mr. Errol Trahan Retirement •• • ••••• ••• • •• • • •• After 35 years of service as an educator in the science and vocational agriculture classrooms of Abbeville High School, part of that service being the training of veterans in agriculture under a federal program, Mr. Edwin Lutgring has won the privilege of retirement. Mrs. Jean Hannagriff 1 . . . from two years of classroom instruction and coaching to employment with an oil company, the financial rewards and security also being the criteria of decision to leave. •••• t t 4 «tt taMtlt,tt Mr. Joe Cormier One of our PE teachers who was granted maternity leave to add a beautiful daughter to be loved by a little brother as well as mamma and daddy. Our sympathy over the loss ofc her father is with her and happiness over her return is with us. Miss Mary Ann Guarino This lady from the business department was on rest and recuperation leave during the second semester. Her faculty and student friends pray and wish that Mrs. Landry will be back with us next term. Mrs. Sherry Landry Returnees On Leave A native Texan who worked as a shrimper for 10 years, Mrs. Isgate caught the ‘teaching virus’ in 1978. did her practice teaching at AHS under the supervision of Mr. James Trahan to become certified in science. She has since been appointed a member of the AHS faculty. Mrs. Ann Isgate A native of Abbeville, Miss Cabrol, a 1975 graduate of AHS, practice taught under the supervision of Mrs. Maeteal Jordan toward her degree in health and physical education and also in psychology from USL. A native of New Orleans, a high school graduate in Metairie. Mr. Robert Rizzuto A Kaplan resident. Mr. Quebodeaux did practice teaching under the supervi- sion of Mr. Blaise Huval. He was a May graduate from USL in May. He enjoys fishing, dog training, and rock ’n roll music. He plays the sax, some piano, and the guitar. He studied for an education degree in science. Mr. Bryce Quebodeaux 265 A native of Grand Cane. La.. Miss Richardson has practice taught under the supervision of Mrs. Emily Norriss in home economics. A graduate of Central High School in Grand Cane, she was to be graduated from USL in May. Her hobbies include swimming, teaching swimming les- sons, and working with animals. She is one among six children in her family. Student Teachers Miss Bananto, a graduate of Central Lafourche High School, practice taught in home economics under the supervision of Mrs. Nancy Marceaux. Her school is in Mathews. La. Before USL. she attended Nichols for two summer sessions. Miss Bananto is a native of Raceland. She enjoys cooking, sewing, swimming, tennis, crafts, and painting. She is an only child. Miss Leahnette Richardson Miss Kerry Bananto $( Mrs. LcBoucf chats; Mrs. Deliphose accepts gift from Mr. Teddy upon retirement; Mrs. Vicki Landry sneaks in pleasure reading before class. Mr. Ivy Landry, a 1976 AHS graduate, practice taught in physical education under the supervision of Ms. Joyce Thibodeaux. He was to graduate in May in health and physical education from USL. His future plans are to teach and coach in Vermilion parish. Mr. Landry has long been involved in youth recreational programs on the Abbeville area. Besides sports. he likes photography. 266 Retirement If Miss Mary Ann Guarino had not already planned her retirement in other directions, she could no doubt write a book about her experiences as a librarian. Miss Guarino, who retires at the end of this term after 30 years with the system, wants to travel, visit with friends, and experiment with hobbies, the things that dedicated service as a teacher and librarian has limited through the years. This refined lady, an AHS graduate who taught and cared for her library like one does a home, served with a bachelor of science degree from USL as an English teacher and librarian. Four of her years of service included classroom teaching and library work. She served as only librarian for 26 years. Beginning in 1950, she was assigned to Henry, Erath, and Abbeville high schools, the past 14 years at AHS. Surely, Miss Guarino has earned her retirement, but the AHS community will miss her. That community wishes her health and happiness, knowing that she will do as grand a job with her traveling and hobbies as she has done as an educator. Miss Mary Ann Guarino Retirement After ten years as coach, teacher, and counselor at AHS, Mr. Lee Haynes has retired to devote time to family and business in Fort Pierce, Florida. He probably will work again in education, but his primary interest is in another business. Before being assigned to AHS, Mr. Haynes taught and coached five years in Minden, La., and five years at Herod High School. He attended high school in Florida and earned his education degrees at Southern University, Baton Rouge. Since Mr. Haynes will be retired from the Louisiana system but not from employment in Florida, he will not have full time to devote to hobbies or other special interests. However, he plans to fish, hunt, enjoy the Florida beaches, and care for his family. The AHS community will miss him but wishes him health and happiness in his new locale and endeavors. 267 Mr. Lee Haynes About the Faculty • Coaches Mike Planchard and Ronald Reed sought new assignments after two years for Planchard and one for Reed with AHS sports. • • Coach Jerry Harrington indicating both squeeze play and prayer during a tense football season moment. • Ms. Joyce Thibodeaux is president-elect of Delta Psi Kappa, a national professional fraternity in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, her term to be during 1982-84. • Mrs. Lynette Cessac departs after ten years among us to return to her native California to be with her parents and old friends. • Mrs. Earline Echeverria has been appointed to the librarian’s post at Kaplan High School. • Ms. Beryl Webb has moved to Houston where she will seek educational advancement, promotion, and new experiences. • Mrs. Barbara Viator has been assigned to Henry since the discontinuance of Reading Lab. 268 Specializing in WEDDINGS INDOOR OUTDOOR PORTRAITS Affijl CiMTWWerral Industrial F’hofoqrjphy SENIOR PORTRAITS WE DO OUR OWN COLOR PROCESSING BY APPOINTMENT ONL Y L French rh buJeju 0 ner ■'AfflllCIi 208 CHARITV 269 STATE f AIM INSURANCE - STATE FARM INSURANCE COMPANIES HOME OFFICES - BLOOMINGTON. Acquiring the necessary skills for future decades is the challenge of our youth and the educational system. You must rise to the challenge and find solutions to the economic problems of our nation and the world. As we approach the next decade, we feel confident that Abbeville High School will continue to provide the proper training, skills, and knowledge to the youth of our area so they can lead meaningful, productive lives, and make many contributions to our community, state, and nation. A high school diploma means that these students were able to get along under the direction of many teachers. What life is all about is getting along reasonably well with various kinds of people. Bobby J. Rabon This marble slab held here by Wayne Champagne and Patrick Lege has since been mounted as a permanent fixture in front of the main entrance lawn and flag pole as the gift to the school from the class of 1980.
