Getting Into It Ms Thibodeaux really got into it this term with exciting PE programs such as soccer The sport is becoming a popular regular. Goodbye, Seniors! One would think AHS will not have a football team next term after saying goodbye to this group of senior Wildcats, but just wait and see. Action This is typical “keep the ball” action on the part of Marcus. 163 Also like this reflection on Annette Frederick’s excited response to the calling of her name as a homecoming maid this term. CALLING from the senior class, homecoming maid, Sheila Frederick; from the junior class, homecoming maid. Annet Frederick; from the junior class, homecoming maid, Deborah Bossley; from the sophomore class, homecoming maid, Adele Hebert, from th Junior class, homecoming maid, Annette Frederick; from the junior class, homecoming maid, Jina Campbell ........... 16b and still calling from the junior class, homecoming maid, Cecily Vallot; from the senior class, homecoming maid, Pauline Frederick; from the senior class, homecoming maid, Sharon Bossley; from the sophomore class, homecoming maid. Dawn Rabon; and from the senior class, your 1978 homecoming queen, her majesty. 167 Wc all react differently to surprises, like Dennis’ expression when he noticed the camera, Scotty’s baffling of his magic trick audience, and Sheila’s excitement when named a homecoming maid. 168 No matter how one looks at it, each has his own view, like Mr. Lanier’s downward probe. Rocky’s balled- up stare, and a library trio's searching research. Scotty ignites his magical Alladin's pan . . . Randall shows the smirk of a wish well made . . . Rocky and Mr. Choate tabulate to determine whose wish will come true. 170 Harold is in his full “soul brother” mood as his handshake with Mr. Mula indicates while telling the assistant principal exactly “what's happening.” 171 Guy B. must have already seen what Brian, William, Guy G., and Paul are still staring at . . . How can John David and friends be looking in a direction opposite from that cute little Angela? Definitely not headed for the goal line here are Maris, Jeff, and Matt, but from those facial expressions, they’ll probably score! 172 Dwayne and Ernie indicate approval of Luke's tonguc-out-of-mouth expression over an unknown situation during a lunch break while Deborah and Mike indicate the pleasure of history notes and warm friendship before the chiming of homeroom bell. Each tooting his own horn in his own fashion, we find Chris with his trumpet. Jody with her clarinet, Brenda with her saxophone, and making music in a different sense, Angela with an arm full of books exchanging classes, Brian with a mind full of curiosity studying geometry, and Keith with wandering eyes scanning what’s happening in the hall. Mike studies a band marching pattern with Mr. Ronney Mayard; Hal tells it all with his hands in a true Cajun demonstration; Randall pantomimes in speech class; Mr. Cessac dramatizes a point in literature; and Maris simply rests his athletic bones before the game and expected touchdown. Pardon the back of Antoinette’s head, but she’s too busy selling a booster badge to Dawn, something she’s long done without a yawn. For those who just might feel that PE docs not reveal a bit of dressed-up appeal. Please notice Mrs. Macteal, And the other face does show That gentle smile from Thibodeaux. Darrell shows the essence of sharing by not only surrendering some of his soda to Phyllis but helping her take a hearty gulp of the sweet stuff. 176 If a photo tells a story worth a thousand words, one picture here tells us that Melanie likes to dance. Sorry, Greg, but this photo tells us that both you and the photographer moved. Keith ponders whether Marlon actually has the face that one needs to hide from the camera. The camera catches Debra in a pensive moment before replying to Stacey's question. And Stacey is shown only resting, not eavesdropping on the chat between Coach Harrington and Miss Bennie. The center of attraction during homecoming court naming assembly fell on Antoinette and Sharon, among nine others; and cheerleaders and the Pep Band livened up the occasion with more bursts of good old AHS spirit as they cheered and tooted their horns and beat their drums and all that sort of stuff. If all Wildcats look like Mary Pat. let the whole pack attack; and if Byran is only a kibitzer, he has no plans nor hints for Larry nor Ronnie for the movement of a king, queen, rook (castle), bishop, knight, or pawn pin on the chess board. 180 Varied expressions were registered by Annette, Jina, Deborah, Bret. Betty, and Cathy during one of their campus thoroughfares during the term. 181 Each in an individual display of concentra- tion, both Ronnie and Larry have taken initiative moves to get it off his chess. 182 Ronnie represents here the small beginning Marty represents here the medium mid-way . . . Joe and his friends represent here the end development and achievement from the process of studying. 183 Each in his own exhibition of spirit are Maris in one of his several touchdown runs; Sheila. Antoinette and Mr. Mula prompting a student group to join in the cheering; Deborah. Cathy, Marla. Nancy, Denise, and Tracy warming up for their next twirling session. Leading the student body “around the world in 180 days were these Student Council officers including Marla, Cecily, Lynn, Annette, Libbic, Lisa, and not shown. Ronnie; and leading in a good spirit of ethnic harmony were Alfred, Marcus. Calvin, Nelson, Lester, Harry, Wilson, and Felix. Annette, Craig, Kramer, Antoinette, and Jina—all model students doing a little modeling at an auditorium fashion show. Even with bags over their heads, two Lisa's, with Katrina, Priscilla, and Tammy are pretty little things full of spirit. Jeeping it out to join the fun and hooray of homecoming are Marty, Bart, Dale and Luther. 190 Yearbook Company Representative Mr. LcBlanc and Sponsor Mr. Choate prepare a grand entrance at the company plant; a group of loyal Wildcat fans form a cheering section in Lake Charles; and Sheila and her daddy acknowledge introduction at homecoming pre-game activities. rO v 191 Lcnorc. with wandering eyes, did not believe she would figure so prominently in this closeup. Marilyn is emphatic with her traditionally Cajun gestures as Bonnie. Phyllis, and Sheila watch the audience's reaction to her words. Roderick is not a fighter, just a boxer, as trophies indicate. E. Doings If football, tag as it is in co-ed physical education classes, ever becomes co-ed tackle or rough and tumble, Nancy would give Kevin a try for that pass. Priscilla would catch and run back several punts. Debbie would probably become the best quarterback, and Deborah would sweep in that pass despite Carroll’s attempt at blocking it. 202 Somebody’s big mouth certainly seems to have much to say about the Veronica, Gwen, Paula, Sandra quartet and Michael's observation of Cordell’s antics, and L. J. displays a completely different “don’t give a----------” attitude. 203 Coochic-coochie-coo, Lynn Smith, displaying a formative and dedicated smile even at six months. Jina was Mr. Campbell’s favorite long before she became a student body favorite, unless she was already a favorite as an eighth grader. Mr. Warren Comeaux has taken the opportunity to retire from teaching classroom as early as possible so that he may still qualify for employment elsewhere to earn a more financial security for himself and his family. Mr. Comeaux does not regret his association with the many young people whom he has taught. He stresses that monetary reasons only have prompted his decision to leave the system so early. His colleagues regret his departure but wish him success in his future endeavors. Mr. Warren Comeaux Right-t-t! After 32 years of service to education in Vermilion Parish, 10 of those years at Abbeville High School, Mr. Clifton Jordan has chosen to retire. This congenial gentleman’s first job as a teacher was from 1947-1950 as a principal-teacher at Gueydan Elementary School, now Jesse Owens Elementary. In 1950 he was transferred by personal request to James A. Herod High School as a teacher of English and Choral Music. He served in that position until 1968. Mr. Jordan joined the AHS English faculty in 1968 where he taught until his retirement. He said that only having reached qualifying retirement time, never a negative feeling toward his work, prompted his decision to leave the classroom. His colleagues and students wish him health and happiness during retirement with an expression that has become synonoymous with Mr. Jordan—“Right-t-t-t!” AHS will miss you both! Good Luck! While still comparatively young both in years and tenure, Mr. Comeaux has chosen the path of retirement from the educational system. Mr. Comeaux leaves after 20 years as a Science teacher, every one of those years at Abbeville High School. The Maurice native claims to have collected memorable moments dur- ing his association with freshman students for the two decades he spent teaching. His many friends at AHS wish him health and happiness always. ST. MARY LAFAYETTE after ■ FORMAIS Six ll dz ‘Pvt uUt 280 208 CHARITY On their respective homecoming floats, the frosh wanted to “grease” the Spartans, the Key Club wanted to “spike” the Spartans, and the FHA wanted to show the way it was next to the way it is. How numerous can beauty be? As numerous as these Basslc chicks—Sharon at four, Mona at two, and Deborah at three years of age! We didn’t do it in '78, but with the spirit this picture illustrates, it should be a certainty in '79 for the class of ’80. Key Club pledges receiving training include Rene Meaux, Scott Faulk, David Lapcrouse, Bobby Bilski, Jack Harrington, Kevin Duhon, Andy Chauvin, and Richard Frederick. 12 I ■m 283 Mr. Mula savored his power with his Mr. ERA title; Ronnie thanked the strength of his crutches during a brief ailment; Aubrin and Lenore enjoyed a short session of good old gossiping in the hall; Craig and Gerald smiled at showing their mounted ducks and Kramer his mounted eager beaver from taxidermy class. Joe dcosn’t always cast such twinkles from his eyes with every smile; Carolyn always smiles while scanning her stuffed purse; Annette is watched by Carrie showing her Leo spirit at such things as selling Dairy Festival T-shirts; and Tara is shown giving a buzz to see how things are at the old plantation. If you do not believe that a bag of potato chips comes in handy on a long convention bus ride, just ask Karen. Mrs. Sarah Darby and her Child Develop- ment program children show homecoming spirit on this float in the parade. 286 Vr'alve Critical and Creative Thinking class members show their projects on advertising gimmicks and propaganda study. Mayor Vorhoff proclaims DECA Week as members look on. We dialed a wrong number for the “hit man” this season but perhaps the future court will see the Spartans strangled. 288 289 Graylin, along with every other Wildcat, was given advice by Coach Harrington to result in a good play by Graylin and a good season for the Wildcats. And then the meeting was adjourned and everyone reported to first period class. Wc support both the “Good Luck, Wildcats” and the “We Love You, Roddy” messages here. Meanwhile, Key Clubbers Tim and David find big ladder support while decorating for the homecoming dance. Fortunately, Jeff seems to have established a friendship with “that thing from his closet.” And Laura is not always left holding the bag, only when she does the grocery shopping. Roderick is always at bat as a gentleman; Martha is always on the move at the keyboard; Todd and Denise are always good friends beyond the shadow of a doubt; and Patrick is always ready to show a patriotic smile. The trophy does not always go to the stronger and faster man, but more often to the one who thinks he can win and does. Cecil J. Picard I’m Graduating By Anonymous There’s a sort of gnawing feeling When I think about the day When the school will be behind me. And I have to go my way. There’s a sort of longing in me That makes me want to stay. I’m going to miss the girls who like To wear the latest style; I’m going to miss the boys who have An understanding smile; I’m going to miss the teachers who Keep watching all the while. I’ll miss the certain persons Who keep whispering in class; I’ll miss the hurried glimpses of A note someone has passed; The games—the fights—the friendships— The things that hold me fast.
