Abbeville High School Abbeville, Louisiana THE WILDCAT Nineteen Hundred Seventy-Two Co-Editors Bobby Cooper Mary Alice Johnnie Diane Meaux Sammy Theriot Business Manager Sammy Abshire Advisor Mr. Joe Choate Howdy! I’m Here! In times such as now - when emphasis is placed on causes with effects; when to be im- portant, an item or event must at least make an effort at solving a problem - students are in- clined to be a bit apathetic about traditions of school life. Not many of these traditions don’t meet the qualifications listed above. It is just that they are not as readily apparent as problem solvers as some of the newer school activities. As a tradition, I fall into this classification; and, on some of the larger campuses, I am getting a share of its apathy. However, a deep look into my importance would quickly prove my necessity. In fact, because of the effect of the time, I am needed as a problem solver more now than ever before. I am a solid tradition, but also a valu- able tool, and can fulfill needs important not only to the faculty and to the students, but to the community as well. Let's look at a few of my functions as I record the school year's history I Am Abbeville High School. 4 I Am Serious Study First, today's school - like most other institutions - is growing faster than ever before. Many high schools now have enrollments equivalent to those of some of our major colleges 10 to 15 years ago. In a school this size, face to face com- munications can no longer be relied upon to distribute the school message. Students with one set of interests may not even be acquainted with students whose interests are totally differ- ent. Faculty members often don't recognize students that don't happen to be in their classes. And, townspeople, who support the school with taxes, are more removed than ever from the campus scene. I - as well as a newspaper - am really needed to communicate to people on all these levels. [ For one thing, both I and the newspaper publications create an awareness of school issues, poli- cies, and problems. We further understanding on the part of the students, parents, and others among interested citizens. It's agreed that our functions are different because of our publi- cation dates. The newspaper provides instant news in brief. But I cover an entire year and can bring to the reader in-depth coverage. I can focus on not only the beginning but also the middle and the end. Possibly the most important contribution is the furthering of acceptance. When students, teachers, parents and the like can see an issue in my entirety, they can more easi- ly accept the ' ange. And, understanding an issue which cropped up this year makes ac- ceptance of future changes more predictable. My second contribution is the benefit to school spirit ( a some- what antiquated but still ap- propriate word). Just as the size of the school has worked to de- crease students' and teachers' knowledge of what is going on, I have also worked to increase school spirit - an important aspect of school life. 5 And Deep Thought, A Moment’s Concentration, Since students are not, in many cases, the closely knitted group that they once were, they find it more difficult to pull to- gether without some unifying factor. I perform a unifying function. I enable students who might otherwise never even have met to identify with each other and to pull together for a common goal. I also serve to increase students' sense of belonging. A sense of belonging is be- coming quite a problem in schools growing in size the way AHS is. Too many commuter students feel like outsiders as compared to those who do not rush to every appointment with bell and bus. Today, students are more inclined to feel as though they belong to a com- munity or just a neighborhood rather than a school family as it should be. By becoming part of me, students are made to feel a part of the school. I also smoothen the way for new students and the acceptance of them by students who have been attending the school for a number of years. Ninth or tenth graders who are unfamiliar with the ways of a new school, a larger school, are likely to have a problem in adjusting to a new way of life if they are not made familiar with the new situation A Moment’s Rest Am A Leader in one way or the other. I see that this is accomplished. I can pave the way for a change - regardless of how abrupt - by providing information on what the new student can expect. Tests have proven that anx- iety on the part of a new student is much greater when there is a lack of adequate information about the new school he's going to enter. I provide this infor- mation in an easy-to-absorb manner, and it is from a student's point of view. Also, the fact that I provide a complete picture (from the beginning of school to the end) is of tremendous orien- tation. Here is the background information so needed for total understanding. 7 And A Follower I Am Leisure I have some unique charac- teristics which make me par- ticularly valuable. Because of my format, which encompasses an entire school year, and my pictorial type of coverage, I am a memory stimulator. And I can even help people relive events that they have never experienced before. It's a fact that people re- member only that which they have experienced in some way or another. Of course, they may recall in future years an event that was relayed to them. But, they will remember only a very small portion of what they were told. They would have had to been there themselves to have recalled many memories as- sociated with a subject or an event. Yet, in today’s larger schools, most students experience only a very small percentage of campus happenings. Therefore, if a student missed out on a football game in order to take part in an inter-school debate, that experience would be gone forever. I, however, through pictures, layouts, and words could help the student vicariously live the event ... And Work, But Most Of All, I could provide details, mental images, and so forth, that would bring exciting ex- perience to many students who might otherwise have never experienced them. Of course, television newscasts could perform the same function, but I am perma- nent. I am there with my ex- periences in pictures and in words for years and years to come ... I never forget!!! Don't you forget my overwhelming im- portance in today's school life. 9 I Am People, Many Kinds Of People. IrnU Am The Masses, 10 The Individual ii I Am You!! K We ll Remember . . Leaders And Supporters 13 IN APPRECIATION of his ability to make our major problems seem minor, and of his philosophy that student and teacher are really each other's best friend, and of his manner of applying a psychology that guides a real value in personal relationships, and of his being a dedicated servant to education, spawned by an enviable understanding of young people, and of his devotion to his counseling responsibilities, and of his being a warm, compassionate human being and friend, the yearbook staff sincerely dedicates the 1972 Wildcat to u Mr. Earle J. Broussard FACULTY Faculty When students met Miss Walker, they en- countered more than a youthful dedication in a commerce department and a coaching know- how on the girls’ basket- ball courts. They en- countered a Barbie doll type of beauty, grace, and friendship, a lady who projects a pure, wholesome, and enjoyable personality which students embrace as a cross between bubble gum and soda pop, each at one time or another a favorite refreshment. Therefore, it was only natural that she be voted favorite female teacher at our school. Saluting that sound student body decision, the yearbook staff wishes her many enjoyable years in our midst. Mr. Harold Sellers Miss Charlotte Walker His mere presence in the malls gives Abbe- ville High School a par- ticular stature. Here he plays his award- winning role, that of a teacher who fascinates classroom after classroom of youngsters with an enviable manner of teaching geometry and General Math II plus the skills and values of happy living. In good times or bad. the demand for his friendship and understanding becomes almost larger than his ability to supply. His display of these qualities has made Prof Sellers, for the fourth consecutive year, the favorite male faculty member by majority vote of the student body. Indeed, it is not by force of habit that the yearbook staff again congratulates him. 16 Favorites 17 Many times, Mr. Broussard and Mr. Haynes have worked together and individually and have succeeded in changing a frowning face to a smiling one. Likewise, Mrs. Guidry and Miss David have worked together and individually to become the keys to the continued smooth operation of the administrative offices. We applaud the efforts of both teams. AN EDITORIAL I have spent two years as yearbook sports editor and four years on the football team. Never have I enjoyed a year as much as this one. Being close to the players on the squad made it even more enjoyable. Never has AHS produced finer players and a better team. A district champion- ship, seven first-team all-district selections, a superb defensive unit that earned the name Magnificent Seven all made our team tops this year. This is a moment and an achievement that will never be for- gotten. This is only the second district championship team in AHS history. A.H.S. Auditorium Abbeville, Louisiana The Community Applauded 187 188 189 Bon Voyage PRESIDENT RICHARD M. NIXON joins the faculty and student body of Abbeville High School in congratula.ting the 1972 graduates and shares in our prayer that each of you has stashed away in your piggy-bank of education enough knowledge, ambition, and courage to do your expected share in better molding this confused world which you now hold in your hands. From the White House and our houses, wishes for success and happiness as proud Americans are extended to you. THE WHITE HOI SE WASHINGTON TO THE 1972 HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES: Graduation is a time for celebrating because it marks the completion of the longest experience you have all shared: twelve years of education. But it is also a time of invitation, of looking toward tomorrow as well as reviewing the lessons of yesterday. It is a time to step back for a moment, and to ponder what the whole of your life might be. At the beginning of this Nation the times were, in a sense, like today is for you. They were times of youth, of freshness and of opportunity. More than half the people in America were less than twenty years old. Jefferson authored the Declaration of Independence at thirty-three ; sixteen other signers were in their thirties; and three were in their twenties. The young Nation and its youthful population were setting out together on a great new adventure. Today we often hear it repeated that youth is the hope of the future. Yet, no matter how often it is said, it remains true. No previous generation of high school students has been so well educated as you. The America which you create can be a Nation even greater than your dreams -- if your wisdom and spirit equal those of the young patriots who first created this land. I am confident about America’s future because I am confident about you. Today, I congratulate you not only on your graduation, but also on the splendid opportunity you have, to help make this an even better land for yourselves and for all Americans. Beau Keith and FHA chapter officers 192 193 '■MM « 194 A Note Of Gratitude During a 35-year teaching tenure, Mrs. Minnie Berry has affected the lives of many citizens. At Abbeville High School for the greater length of that tenure, she has taught a love for humanity while in her speech classrooms. Learning about her retirement in 1972 left many practically speechless but with enough words at our command to tell her that she is loved, respected, and regarded as a lady who has reaped much from her toil for many years. She will not be forgotten. 195 Mrs. Minnie Berry Mr. Robert Nolan Janitor Mr. Lovelace Faulk Janitor Mr. Robert Smith Engineer Backbones” Of AHS Cafeteria Staff Mrs. Marie Ledet Mrs. Ouida Morvant Mrs. Wanda Frederick Mrs. Leona Frederick Mrs. Rose Broussard Mrs. Fanny Broussard Mrs. A udry Campbell Mrs. Irene Sellers 196 Priscilla Durke 1957-1971 Another Angel In His Kingdom In Memoriam FOR A MAIDEN This girl was not to go Until two shoulders cast Shadow upon her snow, And melted it at last.
