THE WILDCAT 1951 Published by THE ANNUAL STAFF ABBEVILLE HIGH SCHOOL Abbeville, Louisiana DEDICATION We are very proud of our faculty—prouder than mere words can express. We are indebted to them for setting and main- taining the high standards which are our pride at Abbeville High School. The 1951 WILDCAT is humbly dedicated to our faculty to stand as a living memorial of their guidance and unfailing interest in our progress. It is our sincere hope that the aims and ideals which we have acquired here may be realized in our future life. 2 ite-; PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE The pages of this volume, depicting student life in the class- room and on the campus during the current session, record the ever-expanding activities at the Abbeville High School. I believe that the experiences attained through these activities contribute to the development of character, personality, and leadership. It is my hope that the achievements of the classes of 1950-51 will prove an inspiration to the classes of the future. 3 It is our hope to portray in the 1951 Wildcat the spirit, the traditions, and the activities of Abbeville High School—and in the years that lie ahead to recall once more the happy experiences of our student days in A.H.S. This drama of the Christ child has been pre- sented by the students every Christmas for the past sixteen years with the exception of the war years. The mixed chorus of seventy-tyro voices, robed in new white vestments, furnished the music for the impressive tableau. 51 Scenes from the Nativity THE CHRISTMAS COWBOY This one-act comedy, presented by the Speech Department December 15, told the story of a little sick girl who had lost her faith in Santa Claus. The kindness and gaiety of a Texas cowboy brought back her faith and gave a Merry Christmas to all the children in the hospital. The rootin'-tootin' cowboy was played by Michael Ledet and the little girl by Merline Touchet. The Key Club motto, Service, means service to school and community. In an impressive ceremony at general assembly on January 24, 1951, sixteen boys were tapped as charter members of the A.H.S. Key Club. These members are: First Row: Lindsey Dumond, Rex LeBlanc (Honorary), Kenneth Taylor, Michael Doolin, Joseph Meaux. Second Row: Gene LeBlanc, Johnny Theall, Calvin Hebert, Sawyer White, Pres- ley Frederick, Curtis Mouton. Third Row: Farley Server, Donald Faulk, Charles Russo, Burton Cade, Eric Landry. Representative group of Industrial Arts Club boys repairing toys for the Kiwanis sponsored Doll and Toy program. Pelican State is, in effect, a mythical 49th state where boys and girls from every parish in Louisiana meet to elect their own officials and enact laws to govern themselves. Every com- munity benefits from the fine training which hundreds have received at Pelican State. Geneva Libersat, with her deep sense of responsibility, set a fine example by fulfilling the important civic duty of serving on juries. The citizens of her city were wise when they elected as chief of police Laura Hargrave, for she has a passion for doing things the right way. Flo LeBlanc, who has a way with people, was a capable state representative. Her outstanding ability made Betty Franciol a natural choice for senator and state commissioner of agriculture. Appointed as city attorney and elected state representative, Oris Broussard had the opportunity to debate and argue to his heart's content. Lindsey Dumond and Kenneth Taylor, good politicians and speakers, made things lively in the legislature when they became state representatives. • ■ tf!?t Junior Favorite MICHAEL DOOLIN Freshman Favorite JIMMIE GORE Sophomore Favorite GEORGE PUTNAM Football Letter-Men SiH'mg Because ¥derfui Mode For Each Other' Wedding Bells' Nobody f CA L£ A 0 0 R £ S S I A S TA R M CO - C0 0 £ S BERTLCTS. The business in which you are engaged deals with the most vital commodity on earth. Your raw material is our community's children - the most precious possessions of your stockholders. Your function is to inspire and guide the mental, moral and spiritual growth of these youngsters from a state of dependence into functioning citizens of a democracy. It is gratifying to see the enthusiasm of your pupils in carry- ing out their school activities. This indicates a wholesome atmosphere which is conducive to proper development. This is intended as a congratulatory message to you, the staff of our school, who must necessarily be responsible for instill- ing this spirit; and I express the hope that you may find in- creasing pleasure in discharging the mo3t vital of all public functions - building character in those who must carry on the world'3 work. 61 I.
