GREEN MACHINE ANNIHILATES TEXAS IRISH: 38 HORNS: 10 We went to Dallas as underdogs against the Longhorns and few people expected us to give them a game. But the Irish had a different idea about the upcoming Cotton Bowl. We worked h ard and prepared with the idea of doing one thing: beating the Longhorns and thus becoming the 1977 NATIONAL CHAMPS. We were surprisingly relaxed before the game since we really had nothing to lose and everything to gain. I knew we had a good team but I never dreamed we ' d do what we did to the Longhorns. We outplayed them in every aspect of the game: offense, defense and the kicking game. If there ever was a day of the Irish, this was certainly it! We all felt fantastic after the game. It was truly a dream come true and something that I will never forget foi the rest of my life. In the locker room some of the players were jumping, screaming and chanting WE ' RE NUMBER ONE! while others were running around giving fellow teammates showers with Coke and Dr. Pepper. One coach was passing out cigars and reporters were trying to get to the star players for inside information. It was real ly exciting being in that locker room with the guys that I ' ve grown to love and respect. Winning the National Championship is fantastic but the best memories of my four years at Notre Dame will be the times that I ' ve shared with my teammates. Knowing them has made the experience at Notre Dame worthwhile. Foolbjll 251
