However a surprisf ingly- large number of other activities is discovered and these various enterprises supply much interest and keep the faculty and pupils, to say nothing of the home folks, agog with anticipation and concern. CONTESTS Contests are ever a spur to unusual effort and Wilson is not lacking in these. There are certain activif ties of this kind in which all schools of the city participate, those which are sponsored by outside agen' cies, who have a vision of a better world and a recognition of the influence of the youth of today. These contests are approved and encouraged by the Board of Education. :ii ii: .gi A yearly contest is that sponsored by the Detroit News, the Spelling Bee. The Wilson winner was Leona McCarter, 7Bf308g the runnerfup was Christine Voden, SAIBZI. All SB pupils were encouraged to participate in the Patriotic Speech Contest sponsored by the Daugh ters of the American Revolution. Willis Lutz, 8Bf22O was the winner. Charles Balkus, 8Bf201, wor second place. 24 :ii The Allied Youth of Detroit invited all 9A pupils to present an essay on The Dangers of Moderate Drinking. The results of this contest were as follows: first place, Christine Markoulg second place, june l-Cenwayg third place, Phyllis Merchant. A ' The art department has taken great interest and pleasure in presenting posters designed to reach the public and influence them to be sympathetic and share in some worthy cause, such as the Red Cross drive and Poppy Sale to help disabled veterans. Many and varied have been the contests within the school itself. Each homeroom has entered into friendly competition with the others in order to Carry on successful activities of this kind. The P.T.A, membership resulted in room 209 carrying off the banner. In the sale of Christmas seals room 306 led and at Easter time room 207 had the most sales. An interesting contest for the sale of tickets for the Wilsoii Spring Musicale is arousing much friendly competition. V :gt ig: :ii In the campaign to secure advertising for the Quill, the leading classes were SA-322, 9A-306 and 7A-207. Marilyn Ellis sold the most and Velma Lovell was second. One hundredfhve girls and forty' four boys participated in this undertaking. :ii :ii ig: The Airplane contest has afforded much interest and opportunity to display skill in this particular craft, :gi :ii tg: The members of the Handicraft Club were happy in trying to make others happy when they dressed dolls for the Coodfellows to give to some doll-less little girls at Christmas time. The one who dressed a doll most attractively was given special honor.. t I Homerooms and individuals exhibit keen interest in being able to achieve a perfect attendance record and to qualify for an honor certificate by ranking high in scholarship. IN THE AUDITORIUM The large auditorium at Wilson has been a place of outstanding pleasure, inspiration, instruction, and entertainment to the faculty and student body, as well as to our neighborhood friends at certain functions. Lectures have been given by Captain Stack of the R. O. T. C., Mr. Dodds of the Y. M. C. A. and David Irwin, an explorer of the Arctic regions, who through the kindness of the Detroit News, brought his faithful dog, his movies and his story to us. :gf :gi Among the evening entertainments given in the auditorium were the enjoyable dramatic feature given by the P.T.A. early in the school year, the evening spent with the W.P.A. actors who also let interest' ing puppets share the program with them, and the District Spring Festival put on by the elementary schools, a most enjoyable number of which was the Tom Thumb Wedding given by pupils of the Mor' le School. ySevcral movies have had their share in the year's program. Among them were the films on safety and a film on the origin and meaning of many words in the English language. The holidays have afforded the inspiration and opportunity for many programs planned and partici' patecl in by members of the student body. HOMEROOM ACTIVITIES Each homeroom shows in fenuit in lannin, a constructive irogram for the twent minutes of the lr: Y P I . , Y day when the class and its teacher are at lnmie. Discussions on subjects ol importance to all, planned programs, free reading, study periods, announcements, current events, checking and marking citizenship, learning three new words each week, as suggested by the Student Council, making scrap books, and read- ing an etiquette book called Behave Yourself are some oi the homeroom happenings. U33 1 9 3 7 BOOK STORE The Wilson School maintains a book store for the convenience of its students, with Mrs. Neil in charge. Book store articles are sold at a cheaper price and are more easily obtained than elsewhere because they are within the school. During the last year, 1,477 new books were purchased by the students of Wilson. An added convenience is the secondfhand department of our book store. This enables us to buy used books that are in good condition at a very reasonable price. Over two hundred second' hand books were sold. LUNCHROOM DEPARTMENT The members of the lunehroom department deserve a great deal of credit for providing the students and teachers with many attractive, wellfbalanced nourishing lunches, throughout the past year. Approx' imately one thousand lunches are prepared daily and the average price of the individual lunch is ten cents. The Cafeteria opens at 11:45 A. M. and continues until 1:05 P. M. Some appealing foods that are popular with most of the students are Hamburg buns, mashed potatoes and gravy, chop suey and rice, ice cream and chocolate milk. Our observation has been that the average student at Wilson Inter' mediate not only appreciates but enjoys good, nourishing food. Following are the members of the lunch' room staff: Mrs. Gertrude Clouston, Managerg Mrs. Mae Blake, Mrs. Edith Barnett, Mrs. Augusta Kaschwig, Mrs. Lillian Kirton, Mrs. Bertha Linck, Mrs. Lillian Malzahn, Mrs. Catherine McCarthy and Mrs. Selma Winter. THE WILSON INTERMEDIATE PARENTTEACHER ASSOCIATION Our school is very proud of its ParentfTeacher Association. This organization has always maintained very high ideals. The meetings have been interesting and helpful, considerable welfare work has been done, the school has been supported in every possible way, and city-wide activities have been partici' pated in by the members of the group. Much of the success has been due to the officers, who are as follows: Mrs. Doyle, Presidentg Mrs. Cunov, First VicefPresidentq Mr. Curtiss, Second Vice'Presidentg Mrs. Newton, Third Vice-Presidentg Mrs. Lytle, Corresponding Secretary, Mrs. Langley, Recording Secretary, Mrs. Lovell, Treasurer, Mrs. Morrison, Publicity Chairman, Mrs. Morse, Historian, Mrs. Dumas, Dramas: Mrs. Frisk, Refreshmentsg Miss Firth, Sponsor. WILSON ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Twice each year, the members of the Wilson Alumni Association gather to renew friendships, to greet former teachers and to spend an enjoyable evening together. In addition to the spring and fall dancing parties, the Alumni Association is sponsoring a moonlight excursion this summer. Plans are already in progress for this affair which promises to be very successful. Besides the social activities the graduates partake, oftentimes, in the more serious ventures of the school. Whenever their aid is required they give wholeheartedly of their services and cooperate in every way possible as well as rendering financial and moral support. This year through the efforts of the Alumni Association a complete Public Address System was installed in our large auditorium. A word of praise is in order to those alumni who go on to higher learning who bring credit and glory to themselves, their families and to Wilson through outstanding achievements, scholarships and leadership.
