Robertson Now, only as we are leaving high school, do we fully realize the important part the school board has played in our lite here. They have always encour- aged those things which are for the betterment of the students. They have stimulated new ideas and revised the old ones-all for the sake of making Willard High School a better institution. We wish to thank Mr. Dale W. Gates, as our superintendent, for the friendliness and the consideration which he has shown us here. His advice has always been helpful to make Wil- lard High School a better place in which to be. His smiling face and kind- ly word have helped to make our life here such a pleasant one. CUIIDUCTORS To Mr. Peter A. Wiebe, we wish to express our appreciation for his effi- ciency and patience in performing his duties as our principal. He has been ever willing to help us all in Willard High School, and has guided many of us thro' not a few rough spots. His sense of fair play and sportsman- ship will be long remembered by all. Four years in which we have had many and varied experiences. As freshmen we did the usual things . . . joined clubs, had parties, and a class assembly with the catchy title of J unior's First Shave . Then in our sophomore year, along with our other doings, we served at the junior-senior banquet and antici- pated what ours would be like next year. As juniors we blossomed forth as upper- classmen, had a play called Just Eighteen . . . only about four months late, dreamed up one of the best junior- seniors where we transported everyone to Mexico, and went as a body to bac- calaureate, where we first got our sense of the responsibility to come with our seniorship. ' Then in the fall of '41, we were at last the seniors. The leaders of the school. We gave to Willard High the first double championship of both football and bas- ketball in the Little Big Four League, were thrilled by the rush of having our pictures taken, our senior play, the senior-junior prom, and the appearance of our annual. Then came the last act, our baccalaureate. Andthe final curtain call, our commencement. ' We are the youth of the inbetween. We are at the start of a finish. The start of the work that's to be done and must be done. We have had the fun of dates, sports, music, rehearsals, plays. And now all that is gone. We were the sen- iors and now we begin again. They have contributed much to the numerous activities of the school-athletics, music, journalism, and their play, a mystery farce, entitled The Green Light, unearthed many talented thespians. They are a good, all around class, leaders in every phase of school life. They have brought new exhilarating ideas with them which have enriched life here at Willard High. Among them in number are many outstanding in all of the various fields of school life. 'They have entered high school as an average class of eighth graders. Later they came into their own as freshmen when they came across with the super-duper idea of a movie benefit that everyone got out of school to see. ' They are the example of a typical class of Willard High School-intelli- gent, friendly, energetic, with the obility to carry through. FRESHIIIEI1 As the weeks have gone by, these freshies, as they are wont to be called, have grown bolder and more confident of their place in the general scheme of school lite here. Only this year have they displayed their talents in their comic melodrama which was presented for their first assembly. Theirs is a high standard to uphold next year as sophomores, but they are bound to come through, for they have learned well the ropes that only last year burned their hands. Junior Whisler, sensational always in his three years of service, was the only logical choice for the captaincy, and his election was unanimous. The ,Crimson Flashes started out with a first quarter touchdown against Ashland, but Ashland, a team that lost only one game in its schedule, tied the game 6-6. With Whisler plunging a touchdown and the point, the Flashes steamrolled over a powerful Shelby eleven 7-6. Suffering a letdown against Western Reserve, the Crimson Flashes returned to brush aside Port Clinton, Norwalk, Bellevue, Crestline, and Gallon in that order. Hats off to Granville Cox, always at his best, always an all-around natural athlete. Hats off to James Jones, Harold Holden, and Adolf Kadrovick, a trio of the strongest linemen in, the history of the school. Hats off to James Shank, whose centers were letter perfect at all times. Hats off to Junior Whisler, Jerry Wilkinson, and Roy Duffy, a dream backfield that could run, pass, and kick with the best. And last but not least, hats off to Coach David Query for a great team and a great bunch of players. - RESERUES Back Row: Coach, Mr. Heisler, R. Bowmar, R. Brickley, First Row: C. Runion, G. Coach David Query has had many great teams during his reign at Willard High, but never a greater team than that team that captured the first and only undisputed Little Big Four basketball championship. Jim Denham, sharpshooting forward who maintained an amazing l4 point per game average during the season, received the nod from Coach Query to lead his team while on the floor. Getting off to a poor start by dropping three consecutive en- counters to Tiffin Columbian, Galion and Crestline, the Crimson Flashes finally found themselves and conquered nine of their remaining ten opponents only to suffer a letdown before the mighty purple and white of Fremont Ross in the first round of the class A tournament at Sandusky. With the excep- tion of Denham, Van Vlerah and Costein, the cage team was composed of those boys who brought the first undisputed Little Big Four grid championship to Willard. They stoop to conquer, these aspiring young journalists. Led by Jack Wise ond Ruth Strauss as co-editors they have endeavored to cover school life as nearly as possible, giving the students the latest dope and a paper of which to be well proud. , Staff meetings in 205 will be long remembered for the rush to meet the ever present deadline and the bull sessions to map out the forthcoming issues. Under the competent direction of Miss Jean Bowman they have turned out one of the best papers on record. X R flex g is 5157? 23.-, F is x .,.. -,. .:r:r3'!'5'5-wi? 535-.3 1 ' ! . They have given both their time and ideas freely in the effort that this yearbook would be the very best. Special mention of Mr. Van Brunt, their efficient adviser, must be made as he was the one who encouraged them when spirits were low and who worked hard along with them. Not to be forgotten soon are those nights when they typed their fingers off or the afternoons out, selling ads. We sincerely tried to make this annual a good one and we hope that it will please you. To create, maintain and extend throughout the school- and community, high standards of Christian character, is the expressed purpose of the Hi-Y Club and to follow out this purpose has been the object of the Willard club throughout the year. They have done this by setting examples in sportsman- ship .and scholarship. Weekly meetings were held Monday nights at 7:00 o'clock in the assembly room of the Y.M.C.A. Mr. Jenkins again served as supervisor while outside aid was received from faculty members, prominent businessmen and other leading citizens. Working in cooperation with La Clef d'Or the Hi-Y boys sponsored ci week of church services with Rev. Mellish of Norwalk in the pulpit. The Hi-Y Club in the past, the present, and the future has been, is and always shall be one of the honorary societies of the Willard High School. lll CLEF D'0R Third Row: B. Armatrout, C. Marking the fifth year of prominent- leadership and successful social activities, La Clef d'Or planned a program of varied interests and seasonal events under the able direction of Miss Bowman, Miss Reynolds, and Mrs. Stull. The members entertained the boyfriends at a Hallowe'en party which was a riotous success-the Christmas dance at the Elks and finally the spring formal, the outstanding event of the year. The Washington's tea held for all girls of the school was an enjoyable function and the Mother and Daughter Banquet climaxed the year. F. F. il. Left to Right: D, Coovert, J. Niver, D. Hahler, C.
