' - ■ _ C ' mon! We ' re Steppin ' Thru Wi Hi... . . . C ' mon! We ' re steppin ' thru Wi Hi in ' 78. We all arrived at school after a short but event-filled summer, eager to see old friends and classmates. Freshmen made their debut into high school life, anxiously steppin ' into new beginnings. Things were hectic in guidance - the computer went haywire with everyone ' s schedules, causing the entire student body to panic. But our capable counselors soon straightened everything out. 3 Steppin ' Thru Lunchtime . . . . . . When the lunch bell rings we ' re all steppin ' into those I- o-n-g lunch lines. After a little good music and good food, we ' re all ready to return to class and - eat! There are candy sales and bake sales and leftover lunches. We ' re Steppin ' Thru New Things . . . 6 . . . We ' re steppin ' thru new things - a new football coach, Mr. Rick White, who led the mighty Indians to a fine 6-4 record; a new vice-principal, Mr. David Johnson, who is usually seen steppin ' thru the halls with a big, friendly smile. The band can be seen steppin ' high with their new uniforms and Rick Parsons was seen with a new face for Halloween. 7 Steppin ' Thru Activities . . . . . Soon after the festivities of a victorious Homecoming we all settled down into the routine of Wi Hi. Many students turned to sports for their enjoyment and the junior class held a slave day which was a success. ... As we ' re steppin ' thru Wi Hi, we know the force is with us - along with skateboarding, motorcycling, gardening, creating, exercising and learning. Steppin ' Thru Fashion . . . . . . Our students can be seen steppin ' into fashion: the three piece, cowl necks, Levis . . . and the Wi Hi varsity jacket is always in style here. No matter what you ' re wearing, a beautiful smile adds the finishing touch. . . . There are a variety of things to be seen while steppin ' thru Wi Hi—anything from cooking to eating; from working to playing. The Booster Club ' s bonfire added a spark of excite¬ ment to the football season, and we all spent time wondering what a Rock-a-brella was! 15 SENIORS s ? vvt ■x • • ■ SENIORS Toussaint munches out at the Wi Hi hangout. So, let us reflect on our years at Wi Hi. As Sophomores we were a class of spunk and spirit. Starting from scratch (with zilch in our account) we worked earnestly, holding bake sales, shoe shines and car washes. We were a group of determined Sophomores, struggling to raise money, while trying to build a winning float. Although we didn ' t win the float competition, our outstanding entry entitled, “The Indians are coming gave us a reason to be proud. Following the Bicentennial theme we constructed Paul Revere astride a horse and won second place, ahead of the class of 77. We continued our year selling Arby ' s coupons and holding a successful • li yard sa l e - After an enjoyable summer we began our Junior year determined to win the float competition. With the “Wild, Wild West as our theme for Homecoming we began designing what was to be the most original float. Our new “pomping method was sticky and messy, but gave a dynamic effect. Our revolving cards, huge dice and poker chips created the perfect gambling scene, which we named, “The Way the West Was Won . Although the Indians lost the football game, our float brought a rewarding first place victory. The actors of the class displayed their talent by performing three one act plays entitled “Mixed Emotions . We combined our talents once more and sponsored the Junior-Senior Banquet. The theme for the banquet was “Senior Class Nostalgia , and the event was most successful. We ended our Junior year with more fund raising (an ever-present problem for our class). And then, our senior year began! Faced with many problems, we began working on Homecoming. Although we got off to a slow start, we pulled together during the last two weeks and worked night and day. Again we used our “pomping method and constructed an animated train which chanted, “We know we can . If fit perfectly into the fairytale theme of “Once Upon A Time , and naturally we won first place. The Indians were also victorious in defeating Queen Anne ' s, 25-0. The drama students of the class were successful year-round at the box office, for they performed three plays: first, the Senior Class Play, entitled “Tear Along the Dotted Line ; second, the Dinner Theater, which consisted of a series of skits; third, the Drama II Play, Murder on Center Stage . Each carried on the tradition of fine Wi Hi entertainment. With thoughts of our prom (or, rather fears of not having one) we continued fund raising. Chocolate candy sales and Senior Dollar Days were the most rewarding. With expectations of a royal night, we began working. We chose the theme, “Castles in the Sky ; our flower, white rose; our colors, baby blue and ivory; and our song, The Greatest Love of All . Prom night was sure to be an enchanting evening. Special events such as the Junior-Senior Banquet and our Baccalaureate were unforgettable. First, we were treated to a fabulous banquet, where we gave our own awards to outstanding seniors. Second, our formal Baccalaureate, where we wore our caps and gowns, combined an inspirational message with special messages from a few classmates. During the service we were reminded of and inspired by our class motto; “Never walk in anyone ' s shadow, for if you fail or if you succeed, at least you will live the life you believe . We accomplished a great deal in our three years at Wi Hi. We not only received an education, but made everlasting friendships and developed unique characters which will lead us through life. We created history! Your friend always, Pam Fennell Odds ' N ' Ends . . . Many old traditions were broken, but many new ones were begun. With the recent loss of the Civic Center there was question as to where our prom and graduation would be held. There was talk of graduating in our own audi¬ torium or on the front lawn. Finally it was decided that commencement would be held at SSC in the new Ben Maggs Physical Activities Center. Also this year, for the first time we held our Bac¬ calaureate Service in our own auditorium. Seniors wore their caps and gowns and sat together. The Tom-Tom would not be complete without some men¬ tion of Ocean City. As the winter wore on, Seniors sat in class, dreaming of prom time and the warm sands of O.C. it seemed as if Spring would never come, but many seniors took a personal leave day and headed for the beach anyway. Those who did were in ship-shape condition after a little break from the daily routine. Finally Spring arrived - late, and rainy. OCEAN CITY 29 We all anticipated a day of sunshine in the rainy week before the prom - to bask in the sun and brown our bods for the big event. This year, as usual, the place to go before and after the prom was Ocean City. We will certainly re¬ member Ocean City as an important part of our Senior year. Senior year was a year of new experiences for all of us. One senior in particular had a very unique experience. Bill Milbourne experienced a close encourter of the blind kind. Throughout his day he received many laughs, sneers and plenty of questions. I was kicked, slapped, and stuck by pins, said Bill, who had anticipated this type of reaction from other students. But some were eager to help and asked Bill about his experiences. He found his way to class with the aid of fellow students and his trusty cane, and amazingly, was only late once. He performed this experience as a project for psychology class. Bill commented that the ex¬ periment was quite worthwhile. I feel like more people would understand things better if they ' d get out of the classroom and do it. JUNIORS JUNIORS Pretty Sue: picturesque in Williamsburg. Brian and Deena: muggers at WiHi? Going out afterwards! Debbie McGlothlin JRS.: SUPERCLASS OF 79!!! Junior class history At the beginning of the year, all the Juniors were ready, willing and able to get things going. Money started rolling in right away as we kicked off with a successful yard sale. After much controversy over the theme for our Homecoming Float, we finally decided upon WiHi ' s Tough — NO YOLK. The float didn ' t win, placing a close second, but after all that work we still felt like winners. Special thanks go to Mr. and Mrs. Aydelotte for the use of their barn, and to Mr. Auer for pulling us along. Money raising projects included bake sales, guessing the number of candy kisses in a jar, and selling off the last of those WIHI hats. We finally proved the superiority of the class of ' 79 by dominating the events of All Sports Night. A victory celebration was held afterwards at Pappy ' s. Although no champagne was served, our coke glasses could be heard clunking to¬ gether as we toasted our success. Rings were ordered in mid-April and we are anxiously awaiting their arrival at the beginning of next year. The Junior Senior Banquet was held on May 1 and we tried to make ours original by having a disco afterwards. Entertainment was provided by Dan Connell and Owen Hooks, and the dance af¬ terwards was hosted by Al Frazier of WSUX. Ev¬ eryone had a great time and it was a unique eve¬ ning. Our junior year was one we know we will al¬ ways remember. It was a year of accomplish¬ ments, OVERCOMING OBSTACLES, and getting to the top. We wouldn ' t have gotten where we are today without our tremendous class spirit and togetherness, or without the guidance of our class officers: president - John Whall; vice- president - Molly McGinty; secretary - Debbie Wells; treasurer - Renee Nacrelli; and historian - Mary Morrison. They kept us going through thick and thin. We knew we could always count on them when the chips were down. We would like to thank Miss Joyce Loeffler for all her extra help. She was always there when we needed her and her speeches were quite wel¬ come at all class meetings. Thanks also to Mr. Mike Minner. All in all this has been a tremendous year and we ' re sorry to see it go, but we will be back next year. In closing, we would like to remind the world — we ' re on our way! Our thanks go to Mr. and Mrs. Gargiliano for letting us use their garage for the preparation of our float. Throughout the year, we have had many suc¬ cessful bake sales such as the ones at the bus ramps, on the soccer field, and on the Downtown Plaza. We also had a combination bake sale and yard sale on Liberty Street at the home of Leslie Jones. We have had a very successful year with money. We placed first in the Can drive and won $25. We were the loudest class at our Pep Rally here at school against Cambridge and we added $15 more dollars to our treasury. We were also very surprised by the amount of enthusiasim we had from our class for donation day. The year is not over yet, and before the close of school we plan to have other meetings. Homecoming arrived and brought new exper¬ iences for everyone involved. The theme for our float was Make the Lions Pussycats and sufficiently represented the hard work we put into it. It even received compliments from up¬ perclassmen. The Freshman Homecoming court included Lisa Culver and Kim Malone. We were proud to have them represent our class. Our main fund raiser for the year was provid¬ ing all those great baked goods at the soccer games. Thanks to everyone who supported us. Thanks also go to Mrs. Elaine Shahan and Mr. Robert Majors. At halftime, the Wi Hi band marched onto the field and put on a fine show. Their hard work paid off and their per¬ formance was superb. At 8:00 that evening, the Homecoming dance began. Christmas dance For the first time in several years, Wi Hi had a Christmas Dance. Sponsored by the SGA, it was held on December 17 in the cafeteria. The dress was semi- formal and everyone looked as Christmasie as ever and ready for the season. Urban Renewal was the band that played. At first- horrors! - we were to make them up by losing four precious days of our very first ever spring vacation. Howls came from all over town, and resulted in adding the days instead to the end of the year. Better-espe- cially for seniors who didn ' t then have to make them up at all! Underclassmen, don ' t lose heart- maybe your senior year will have snow days for you, too. 113 Senior Craig Daniels emerges from the tunnel. Kevin and Andy draft last minute participants for the Senior Class. Five hungry contestants brave the banana-eating contest- freshmen were the hungriest and won. Seniors cheer for their class, but only pull second place. H4 Wi Hi held its second annual All Sports Night on Saturday February 4, 1978. The four classes built up their teams with their omnipotent foe, the faculty, in mind. The five teams staged a valiant battle, all for the honor of being number one. Class athletes participated in the tunnel race, sack race, ping-pong relay, the balloon burst, back-to- back relay, crab relay, the ever-popular izzy- dizzy relay, and the grueling obstacle course. The final standings in these exciting events had to be decided by the last event; the banana eating contest. The juniors pulled off an upset win, with the seniors right on their heels. The sophomores, freshmen and faculty followed in proper suit. I ! Don ' t just stand there, Greg. Do something! Terri Gootee and Mr. Stanley take a breather between events. Wi Hi ' s drama department was very active this year. Mrs. Taylor ' s Drama II class kicked off the year ' s activities with Children ' s Theatre, per¬ formed October 18th through the 27th. Two plays were presented to several elementary schools in the area. Kid Avalanche, starring Scott Davenport and Kathi Peavley, and The Leprechaun ' s Pot of Gold with Darlene Vin¬ cent, Jeanine Murphy, and Annette Gregory wre the plays. Despite dress rehearsal blahs, the plays were successful, and the group received several fan letters. Soon afterward, Kim Webster and Craig Everett won the leading roles in the Senior class play. Tear Along the Dotted Line was pre¬ sented in November. In February, Wi Hi News and Indian Chant pre¬ sented twelve comedy skits at the Dinner Theatre. Again, the Drama II class participated, along with Mrs. J. Taylor, Miss Seward, and Mrs. Wilsey. All of the skits were student directed. Then came Spring with the three Drama I plays - an evening of Suicide, Satire, and Satan. Again, there were student directors. Drama II class wound up the year with the pro¬ duction of a suspense-filled murder mystery. Murder on Center Stage was presented in May and starred Kathi Peavley and Rick Parsons. The thunderstorm raging outside greatly added to the special effects on opening night. The cast was presented with a standing ovation on both nights. A good year. Finally, our Girls and J.V. teams both enjoyed undefeated seasons. This year ' s hockey team ended with a 2-5-3 record. Coach Holiday introduced a change in strategy for the defense towards the middle of the season, which proved very surprising to our opponents. The juniors put on the best Jr.-Sr. Banquet in many years. Several busy sophomores and freshman served the fried chicken and ham dinner while Dan Connell and Owen Hooks kept everyone entertained with their mellow mood music. After diner was over, Curties Everett emceed the awards program. Seniors were honored with clever awards and Curtis ' humor. The awards preceded the first Jr.-Sr. Banquet Disco ever. Al Frazier and his WSUX mobile disco kept Wi Hi dancing into the night — and it was certainly a royal knight. 168 Is Greg really the best looking, Marlena? What was in your iced tea Ricky? Wow, Susan, you look peachy-keen. Greaser Day, an SGA pro¬ ject, was held on April 21. Students and teachers alike donned fifties attire and jitter- bugged around Wi Hi all day. There were ponytails, rolled- up jeans, full skirts, bright red lips, slicked back hair and white socks. Participation was very enthusiastic this year. However, the Greaser Dance had to be cancelled due to poor ticket sales. Wi Hi dug fifties attire but, unfortunately, wasn ' t too keen on a sock hop. Mr. Coll. Bobsie Twins. Celebrities of Sha Na Na. ' Twas the night before the Prom when all through the Midway Room people were stirring, and painting, and praying for the decorations to be ready soon. With no back¬ drop in sight, Marc Altamar worked through the night and gave us a Castle In The Sky. We reached for the stars, climbed ladders and put glit¬ tering castles on all the tables. We worked ' til we dropped and we made it to the top, 78 ' s Castles In The Sky! The prom was held on May 19, a beautiful evening that held enchantment in the air. As the couples crossed the drawbridge entrance they were transcended into a blue and ivory world of Castles in the Sky , complete with glittering stars, wispy clouds and even a knight in shining armor. They danced through the night to the funky sounds of Imani . Then it was Grand March time — a slow procession this year, due to the lack of space. The couples circled the room in a huge royal procession to The Great¬ est Love Of All . There was a problem with the record so Bill Milbourne and Melva Polk hon¬ ored us with their beautiful rendition of our class song. This was followed by more of Imani ' s jazzy tunes, but it was over all too soon — at the stroke of midnight. As the couples left they received brandy snifter souveniers of their royal night. And before the breakfast at 1 a.m. many couples put them to use in a toast to the class of ' 78 . 173 PROM Commencement exercises were held at the Ben Maggs Physical Activities Center, Salisbury State College, on May 31,1978 at 7 p.m. Gradu¬ ating seniors were there 45 minutes early, anxi¬ ously awaiting the first notes of Pomp and Cir¬ cumstance to signal their entrance. Finally 7:00 came. We marched in, smiling and waving to family and friends, adjusting our caps, trying to maintain our spacing. We sat fidgeting, trying to catch the attention of special friends who, un¬ fortunately, were not our same height. Finally it was time to receive our diplomas. We anxiously waited for our names to be called, received our diplomas and somehow found our ways back to our seats. Soon it was over. Overflowing with smiles or tears, or sometimes both, we marched out together, for the last time as a class. As we fought the crowd to find family and friends, we left behind one phase of our lives to begin an other. It was the climax of twelve happy, sad, wonderful, awful, challenging, boring, short, long, crazy years — all over in a brief blur. GRADUATION 178 Wi Hi held three Awareness weeks this year: Fine arts Week, Science Awareness Week, and Social Studies Awareness Week. The purpose was to make students aware of music, dance, litera¬ ture, the environment, and our heritage. Visiting experts participated in workshops, assemblies, and seminars. And the halls were full of painted people talking about clean water and going to jail. Judy Bateman, from the City Hall Museum, gives a demo for Art Club.
