Indoor soccer will never be the samel Sometime in early Novem- ber, John Nelson. the manager of Glen Ayre Indoor Sports Club, Carol Stream, received a call. Another soccer team wanted to enter in the under I9, A league. The only difference was that this was no ordinary soccer team. It was the Shankers! From the first game, soccer was revolutionized by I6 of the craziest players ever to take the field. Of the original I6 players, only 4 had ever played organized soccer previously. That left I2 Shankers who had no concept of what indoor soccer was about. Did it matter? That question was quickly put to rest. The Shankers were not there to learn how to play soccer. They were there to teach the rest of the league how to play Shanker Soccer. Billy Kohley had a vision. What did he see in this vision? I6 Seniors from Wheaton Central transform an ordinary indoor soccer league into pandemonium. These Seniors reached every social order Cen- tral had to offer. From football players to rodeo clown to aquatic ballet artists, each having his own unique characteristic that made him a true Shanker. The Shankers were the roughest, most penal- ized, most undaunted team in the league. With Chris Kouzes draw- ing more penalties than the other teams combined, Bill Schaeffer decapitating goalies every other week. and other unnamed indivi- duals who thought they were still playing football, the Shankers literally bruised their way through an undefeated championship season. To top it off, the owners of Glen Ayre, who refused to ever let the Shankers play there again, were the ones who had to give the Shankers the I6 trophies that signified their glorious victory. Unfortunately. there will never be another Shanker game. The Shanker's soccer career ended with the Class of '86 and the cham- pionship game. For all those who participated actively on or with the Shankers, the ever-living memory of the 3-I Shankers championship victory will never be forgotten. It is truly remarkable that I6 stu- dents could form a team, and win a championship in a sport they had never played. That is what the Shankers were all about. The Shankers owe much thanks to some very special people: Mr. Leadbetter CHead Coach, Top Shankerb, Mr. Circelli CShanker jer- seysj, Matt Anderson and Dan Kennedy Cco-captainsj, Bill Kohley CManager, M.V.P.D, Tony Kim CPubIic Relationsj, John Tayge CPresi- dent of Shanker Fan Clubj, and Sarah Kincaid and Angie Taheri CTeam prestigej. They would also like to thank Janet Kim for keep- ing up student interest by putting the Shankers in the school paper. The most thanks go to the true Shanker fans who followed us through the season, and at the Championship game. On this note, the Shanker's ask that everyone remember the Shanker motto: We Don't Care! and to those I6 guys who made the Shankers what they were, remember, once a Shanker, always a Shankerl 177
