THEME AND DEDICATION The sands of time passing Through the age-old hour glass is the design pre- sented as the cover for Flight '54. It is symbolic of the growth and progress that has occurred at Westchester High since its inception in l948. For this reason the i954 to en West room princ annual is dedicated to the present seniors who were the first cautious B-7's ter Westchester in its beginning. September l3, 1948, was a dismal overcast day, but it marked the birth of chester High School. Some benches were set up along the side of the present s 67 and 68. This served as our first assembly area. Mrs. Margaret Horn as ipal of Westchester Junior High School welcomed eighteen teachers and three hundred eighty-one eager students to the newest school plant in Los Angeles. step The word pioneer seemed to characterize the newly opened school. Each toward being the top high school in Los Angeles was treated as an experi- ment, a successful experiment. of th The construction period which ended in September of l95l unfolded one e most modern high school plants in the United States. Since that time other school systems have used modern school designs on the basis of the success it has received here. Scho With the new building came a Renaissance of competition. Westchester High ol was going to be put on the map. Athletes strove for recognition from the older high schools in the city. Prizes for all forms of contests in school activities were battled for by Westchester students. Once in awhile we reached the top. More often we were beaten by this or that high school. All the time though, we were building spirit through our own efforts to gain prestige. it as cate year We won't begin to speak of this past year as a peak, but we will consider a sturdy foundation for future years. To you seniors who have seen this growth while being a part of it we dedi- this book. Let this book remind you not only of l954, but of the past six s that you have spent putting Westchester High on its way up the ladder to the best, by giving it your best. ms ,wet , I . ., .ev

administration We shall never forget that first morning in September 1948 when we were introduced to our high school and our principal, MRS. HORN. She has been working side by side with us ever since to aid us in achieving distinction in every- thing we have done. MRS. YOUNG has been at Westchester since September, l95l. Although she has not been with us from the beginning, she has gained much admiration from those who know her. Among her many duties are: organizing the daily bulle- tin, sponsoring the Girls' League, and arranging the master calendar for our school activities. MR. FRED TANNER has been at Westchester only two years, but the work he has successfully completed in that time is amazing. Under his sponsorship the Boys' League has become one of the most active in the entire city. He has shown a strong faith in Westchester sports, which has been rewarded by the steady improve- ment ot its teams. Mr. Fred Tanner has not been here since Westchester's beginning, but he will long be remembered before its end. fQ - sz.. ' M, ,W ,ff . ,gy
