We sponsored a meat-loaf supper during the month of January, from which we made a profit of 51 10.00. Our final proiect for the year is handling the con- cession booth at the Triple C Tournament, held this year at Westbrook High School for the first time. Money obtained will go towards our class gift to the school. For this gift, we have had a few suggestions such as one large sign for the front lawn saying Westbrook Senior High School. Another suggestion was to have individual signs placed over the different offices, library, and book rooms. We all have our class rings and pins, but we are waiting for that day in June when we will receive our diplomas. 36 We Bulld Foreign Relations I X v--t 1 MARK RAUH Two years ago I turned In my applncatlon for an American Field Service Scholarship I dldnt realize what I was doing at the time Now I know what I dad l started the greatest experience of my lute My home town IS St Gallen a very old part of Swutzerland l have llved there all my lute but I have traveled a great deal nn Europe For twelve years l went to school IH St Gallen then I had the opportunuty to come to Westbrook for my senior year Thus I have learned that there ns a great dncference between the American school system and the Swnss school system Here In Ameruca every youngster has the wonderful chance to go to school for twelve years In Switzerland there are no such chances for an education There an educatnon of thirteen years IS a prrvnlege that only a few have We have to buy our own books and materials not have them supplned for us as the Amerncan students do The Swnss system of the elnte hugh school IS very dnfflcult to compare to Westbrook s schools 38 I C y . Once I began to under- stand the American way of life I had a wonderful contact with these people, and I admired their hospitality, especially in school. I began to like Westbrook High, and this place became a part of my life. The teachers, to whom I am very thankful for their patience, are much more friendly to the pupils than the teachers in Switzerland are. Scholastically, the Swiss school is harder than Westbrook High. Our usual school day is from 7:25 to 11:45 and from 2:15 to 5:35. We also have school in the morning on Saturdays. We don't have any outside activities, neither sports nor socials, but since I have been in America, I see what we miss in not having these outside activities. I never shall forget the wonderful experiences I have had in Westbrook and hope that Westbrook doesn't forget me. l would like the AFS program to become ca regular part of the school program in Westbrook. 39 :Ill X1 ...Q-.Q ' As Sophomores-1956 As Sophomores we returned with a wonderful feeling in the back of our minds. We were to be lucky enough not to have to remain in the old building while the upper classmen moved into the new school on Stroudwater Street. We also had a sad feeling because again we were going to be the youngest members of the school. The excitement and ioy of being in a new school finally overcame our inferiority complex. As Freshmen-1955 As Freshmen we entered the school shivering and shaking because of the tales handed to us by upper classmen. However, Freshman Recep- tion arrived and ended and everyone was still alive. We showed the upper classmen that we had interest and talent in dramatics, prize speak- ing, and music. Many of the students appeared on stage that night along with our popular girl president, Donna Skillings, who received the offi- cial welcome from the Senior Class President. SENIOR BUILDING I ,.,.,A, 3 - hm. 5 -5 ' . ,J Q I ' I ,i -,,,,, Q j As Seniors-1958! As Seniors, we say to each other, lt doesn't seem possible, does it? Well it's true whether you like it or not and graduation is nearly here. Class pictures are the subject of most conversa- tions and when that isn't, graduation is. Four short years are almost over and have left us with many memories that we will cherish forever. As Juniors-1957 As Juniors, we had only one idea in our mincls, that of measuring and receiving class rings. These were admired for weeks by the Seniors and Sophomores. Now that we had class rings, we were upperclassmen and ready for our com- ing Senior year. CLASS P69 I '20 435 1- fi f? P J m fs MN O QMQX H X '9 xx 71,4 5753. In the fall of 1955 the Student Council de- cided to sponsor a canned food drive to bene- fit the needy families of Westbrook at Thanks- giving. The students pitched in by con- tributing very generously to this cause. At the Thanksgiving assembly the canned goods were presented to the mayor, and he, in turn, distributed them to the families in the best way possible. Because of the great success that year, it has been repeated in '56 and '57 with even greater success. Toys at Christmas . . . Christmas spirit was in high gear when nearly everyone in school dropped a toy into the box for underprivileged children. This box was placed at the end of the corridor by the members of the Key Club, ready for contributions. This new idea for helping others was carried out very successfully, and we hope the toys brought ioy to the hearts of the receivers. We know they did to the givers. 55 left to Right D Cousens P Doucette J Galley C McKinley P Hebert K Morablto C loveloy J Christensen W Carter NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Not untll 1954 clad Westbrook Hugh School obtann a charter from the Natuonal Honor Society This IS a natuon wude society honornng scholarshup It IS an honor to belong Members are chosen by a board of five of the faculty for theur scholar shlp leadership, servlce, and character Only members of the rumor and sensor classes with an average of 85 or better nn theur studues are eluglble for candudate ship As we go to press the members of the Nahonal Honor Socxety are the following Januce Christensen Donna Cousens Patrucua Doucette Jeanne Galley, Patrucla Hebert, Carol Loveloy, Carol McKunley, Kathleen Morabnto, and Wayne Carter More will be selected later un the sprung 56 , i I 'I I ' Standing, left to Right: I. The season started off with a bang when the following officers were elected: Gerard Francoeur, presi- dent, Irvine Marsters, vice-president, and Jane Libby, secretary-treasurer. A number of practical things have been achieved this year. A suggestion box has been put in the corridor for the students to give their ideas, both pro and con. Teachers' Appreciation Day again this year was a complete surprise to the faculty who were extremely pleased. The Thanksgiving Assembly and the annual canned food drive for needy families in our city was as great a success in '58 as it has been in previous years. The Council sent sixteen members to the Maine Convention of Student Councils in Brunswick this year. 57 , I . D, . '.C 'Q Us W n .Vu ir, Fl. 'A 'S li i First Row: G. LaBrecque, D. Skillings, E. Membership is limimed to iuniors and seniors taking college English. It has kept up its fine reputation under the leadership of Jef? Milliken, president, the omnipotent influence of busy Pat Hebert, vice-president, the efficient and effective presence of Donna Skillings, secretary, and the penny-wise financial manage- ment of Kathleen Morabito, treasurer. Mrs. Hutchinson, our advisor, is indispensable. The club has been entertained by many interesting and worth while speakers. All speakers contributed educationally. Again, our first big event of the year was a football rally 'fol- lowed by a dance. Both the gigantic bonfire, on the school grounds, and the dance in the gym, were successes. However, the most elabo- rate affair of the year is the annual Stardust Ball. The theme selected for this year is Dream Along With Me . This will be held on March 28, 1958. We are looking forward to making this the greatest r for Stardust Ball. At the club banquet which closes the year, everyone has a wonderful time. 1 -we-fire Q , K x-Im' AQ!! First Row: J. Andrews, S. We have also planned numerous rollerskating parties for raising revenue. They have been very successful. Two of the many field trips we have been on this year were to the South- worth Machine Shop and to the Thomas Laughlin Division of the American Hoist 81 Derrick Company. These trips have proved very successful in helping our club members further their knowledge and better understand how to plan for the future. Several will enter the State of Maine Future Apprentice Competition at Augusta and try to bring home a few trophies as the Industrial boys of the past have done. We are also planning a trip to Boston this year and hope to visit some of the large automobile factories. We plan to visit Durgin Park and per- haps see Cinerama. Its present members hope that the Industrial Club will continue on in the future to help the school, its teachers, and its students. 61 T Front Row, left to Right: T. Merrill, D. Skillings, P. LATIN CLUB Sociatas Latina, organized two years ago, admits to its membership all pupils studying Latin. The obiect of the club is to furnish an opportunity for the student to learn more about the Romans and their civilization and to establish friendly relations between the student and the teacher, and between the teacher and student. The first meeting for 1957 was the initiation of new members. This was done in real Roman style. Each new member held a burning candle and repeated a solemn oath to support the club. Officers presiding were Consul, Patricia Hebert, Sub Consul, Frederick Samp- son, Scriba, Donna Skillings, and Quaestor, Irvine Marsters. Mrs. Moody is the adviser. At each meeting a business meeting is followed by a program. Some of the various programs of the year have been a guest speaker, Mark Rauh, an exchange student from Switzerland, Latin games, Latin carols, Latin skits and Latin reports. A project that is being looked forward to is an authenic Roman Banquet with all the fixings. Many think that Latin is a dead language, but it certainly lives in Westbrook High School. 62 , f 11 V i Dua . 'Q-QI ' QT 5 aff-323' g s. A Q N n gg N n 1 5 Q2 if 1 1 , rl ...Q--. bw First Row: T. On December sixth Jeanne Gailey, Cynthia Peters, Vivian Bradley, and Carol Margarita participated in the Bates League Discussion at Bates College. The question was What should be the policy of United States foreign aid? Jeanne Gailey placed second in her panel discussion. On December seventh Mark Rauh, Kathleen Morabito, Robert Travis, and Carol McKinley took part in the Bowdoin League Debates at Brunswick. Mark and Kathleen did an excellent job in the advanced division and Bob and Carol did as well in the novice division. We hope this year to be victorious in both preliminary debates in the Bates League and enter the finals in Lewiston. A Chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America, the national youth organization for business students, has been formed at WSHS this year. The highlight of the year was the formal installation in March. Miss Corinne Turgeon, former president of the Westbrook Business and Professional Women's Club, presented the charter to the new president of FBLA, Norma Jean Hanson. The impressive candlelight ceremony conducted by the officers, sponsors, and charter members was held in the auditorium of the school. Speakers at different meetings included a business manager of the Portland Better Business Bureau, a personnel manager from the Casco Bank and Trust Co., an assistant personnel manager from the Union Mutual Insurance Co., and a panel of secretaries employed by Westbrook firms. The Future Teachers' of America Club is continuing its second successful year of existence at Westbrook High School. During the past year, under the guidance of our advisor, Miss Abbott, the club has held many meetings of a social and business nature. At one meeting the club was host to two student teachers from Gorham State Teachers' College who gave an informal talk on the practice teacher's training. One ofthe club members, Pat Brochu, spent an afternoon in a real classroom taking part in the children's program and helping the teacher. We hope to make this a permanent activity for the club members. Future plans include a visit to Gorham State Teachers' College and another to the School for the Deaf. Officers are president, Joe Veayo, vice-president, Donna Brix, and secretary- treasurer, Pat Brochu. The Future Homemakers of America Club was first organized in 1948 and has been very active in school and community affairs since. Some of their goals are to promote international good will, to work for better home and family life for all, and to provide wholesome individual and group recreation. They sent bibs for needy children in Greece, did projects at home to improve their family life, worked at school suppers and have had parties of their own to provide wholesome group recreation. The officers of this year are president, Judith Kennedy, vice-president, Patri- cia Ladd, secretary, Shirley Davis, treasurer, Joan Colpritt, reporter, Dorothy Roma and parliamentarian, Nancy Cunningham. NEWSPAPER Under the supervision of Mrs. Conners the stat? of the comparatively new newspaper got off to a tremendous start for the third year. Mark Rauh and Susan Porter were elected co-editors, and, with the co- operation of the news editors, business managers, and reporters, have managed to publish an edition of the BLUE LINE every month. Each reporter on the staff is held responsible for a particular job and has done remarkably well. The paper has progressed from the two pages of the first edition to the five pages of the recent numbers. Each edition ofthe BLUE LINE is interesting and educational and the features, club news, record polls, and many other popular articles hold the interest of any and all students. Not only is it interesting to work on the newspaper staff but it is also educa- tional for those who plan to enter the field of iournalism. THE STAFF Co-editors: Mark Rauh, Susan Porter, News editors: Robert Travis, Grace Beaudoin, Business Managers: Cay Preston, Jeanette Martin, Circulation Manager: Julie Pedneault, Reporters: Dawn Foster, Denise Tanguay, Carmen Hurtubise, John Chamard, Winston Brown, Ronnie Hurd, Bette Jane Billings, Bruce Train, Norma Hansen, Cecile Drouin, Joanne Markos, Pat Letarte, Beatrice Nadeau, and Donna Boissonneau. 66 SCIENCE CLUB Front Row, Left to Right: S. When school began in September there was quite a bit of excitement among the boys who were interested in forming a Science Club. At the first meeting the following were elected officers: president, James Devlin, vice-president, Robert Fitz: and secretary, Kenneth Denbow. The club meets every two weeks. The members are working on projects which they are hoping to enter in the science fair in the spring. The money for these proiects comes from the dues which the students pay. Among these projects are building rockets, some of which have already been fired in Westbrook, and trying to build an atomic reactor. Some of these proiects are worked on at home by the boys. Last year the club adopted a constitution and everyone is helping to uphold it. Some day the boys hope to put on a science fair of their own although no plans have as yet been made. One of the most active clubs is the Ski Club. The members, headed by president, Dave Cotep vice-president, Lester Wormell, and advertising manager, Fred Sampson meet on all Thursdays when snow conditions are good. They train regularly on Sundays at Sugar Loaf under the expert guidance of Avon Hilton. They plan trips to Mount Washington, the lntervale Ski Area at Jackson, and to Pinkham Notch and North Conway. Of the thirty members in the club, only a few actually know how to ski- this is what makes the club so active. One week last February was particularly active-Bob Wilson broke his ski binding and sprained an arm, Win Fernald's foot was frost-bitten, Stan Got? broke an arm, Tom Kemp sprained his ankle and broke a tendon, and to top it all off, the president, Dave Cote, went over a ten foot cliff and broke both his skis. In the fall, headed by the maiorettes, the band marched out on the football field with new marches and routines ready to urge the team on to victory. The next step was the Christmas Assembly. In this program the band became an orchestra and played Christmas Carols. At the present time the band is working very hard learning many new numbers for the annual ioint concert with Rumford on March 15, and its annual spring concert. They also hope to arrange another ioint concert with Marblehead, Massachusetts. Many members from the band have applied to All State p most of them are expected to make it. The dance band has not been standing still either. They practice weekly right after the big band. The members enioy these practices very much even though they say it's hard work. Occasionally Mr. Jordan has ioined the dance band and does an excellent iob blowing his trombone. The dance band per- forms in the Spring Concert. 70 rv jafilif W i , A ,,. -,M ..,,,.. .. Of course there are also many sophomores and iuniors who are of great importance. The club totals eighty. Whenever they feel that the school should hear some of the pieces they have mastered to perfection, they take port in an assembly or put on a concert. They made both the Thanksgiving and Christmas assemblies enioyoble for the entire student body. Plans are being made for the spring concert with hopes of its being a bigger success than ever before. The most important event to all is the Western Maine Music Festival held in May, in which they will have an opportunity to show their skill to other schools in Maine. Everyone is hoping for o grade equal to that of other years and perhaps a little better. 71 NJ rgfifbi I 1 tix, il . 'vu First Row: D. Cousens, J. Gailey, D. Skillings, R. Legere, K. Anderson, P. WASHINGTON CLUB In April twenty odd seniors plan to hop aboard a bus and start off on one glorious week of travel and fun. Stopovers will be made in New York and Philadelphia. Most of their time and hard-earned money will be spent in Washington, D. C. Traveling along with these seniors will be the chaperones who are contributing their time, energy, and nerves. The Washington Club held its first meeting in 1956. As Juniors, they dis- cussed dues and money raising projects for their forth-coming senior year. In the fall of 1957, the pockets of certain seniors were painstakingly emptied. Final plans were made to earn money by having a concert by the internationally known Bowdoin Meddiebemptsters. This concert was enjoyed by all. Peter Potter, Westbrook High School alumnus, was a special treat for the audience. As April, 1958, draws near, impatience increases. The club has been led very ably by Ronald Legere, president, Kathryn Anderson, secretary, and Donna Skillings, treasurer. Mr. Davqn.
