TIME WAS Let us stop here for a moment. Let us close our eyes and tra- vel back a few hundred years. Perhaps we might see a town busy with people at work, peo- ple who were not educated in schools, but who learned all' they knew in the school of nHard Knocks.N As we look over the countryside, we might gee in the distance 8 fine home, a home surrounded by ac- res and acres of land, and if we could go into that home, we should find people who were then considered highly educat- ed, Why? TIME WAS.... Then only the wealthy could afford to cultivate the fruits of ed- ucation. No, don't open your eyesg let us continue to travel. Let us see how education progressed. TIME HAS... Only the sons of the rich were fortunate enough to receive an education, but soon the daughters of the weal thy families began to attend school. As the sands of time trickle through our fingers we find a peasant family strugg- ling to send their son to school. Later there were many day schools. In 1840 the first night schoo s opened their doors. For the first time the working people were given the opportunity t0 rise above their station in life, for t'e first time they were allowed to equip them- selves, for a better position. Although day schools were now open to all, there were many who had to mork. Night school afforded the opportunity to round out an education while continuin to earn a living. Now let us pause at the turn of the Twentieth Century. TIME WAS... When West Night was an infant. It came into existance in the Old First Intermediate School Building on Baymiller Street. Five years later it was moved to the orginal Hughes High School Building where it remained for three years. Once again the pupils packed up their cooks and returned to Baymiller Street. In 1914 West Nighters moved into the present Hughes High School building. The class of l9l4 commemo- rated this event by presenting a bronze tablet. TIME WAS.... The curriculum was organized to meet the needs of the time, but in 1905 the courses of stvdy were changed to meet new demands, and more rigid stand- ards were followed. The present system is so arranged that night schools follow pretty much the same pattern as day schools, and offer the same diploma. West Nirht High School is recognized as a school of first rank by the State Super- intendent of Instruction. , As we lower t e curtain on the past and open our eyes to the present, we breathe a sigh of relief that we fre not faced with the problems of long ago. We are content to let the past remain the fast and look forward , for we are curious to know WHAT ? NEXT. What willl tomorrow bring, what will this annual record next year and what will next years history read.
