the Scarlette vo1ce of the body Like the voice of the human body, the Scarlette has been the spokes- man of our school. Clearly and strongly it has voiced opinions on policy, a gymeauditorium, the cafeteria improvement program, the Honor Society, the Christmas seals, polio, and Red Cross drives, the Clothes for Bremen drive, and other important topics. The Scarlette has recorded outstanding events of the school year-e the tourneys, the basketball and football games, the HifY, Girls' Club, and Ahea dances, dinners and meetings, the Iunior Class, Senior Class and Speech Arts plays, and scholarship and contest winners. The Scarlette has recognized unusual ability or high achievement in the column, The Scarlette Congratulatesf' Outstanding seniors have been featured in Big Shots. Modern music has been discussed in Ulazz Mood, and sports have been thoroughly covered in Sports- lights. lournalism, a new subject this last year, helped prepare students for the difficult task of writing, editing, and making up the Scarlette. Under the guidance of Mr. Ellis Hopkins, sponsor, and Dorothy Ayres, editor, the two staffs published twelve issues during the year. There are many highlights that the staffs will remember. They will recall the tirst issue which was put together during the sultry days of August so that it could be distributed along with schedules on the first day of school in September. They will remember the big Christmas issue that contained the prize-winning stories, poems, and essays of the annual Scarlette Christmas composition contest, They will remember with a smile the carnival foolishness in the big April Fools issue, Perhaps the seniors will recall with a slight note of sadness the last issue that they worked on, the May l9 issue. The juniors may remember the enthusiasm that they displayed on their first issue, the Iune 9 issue, which was put out by the l95O-Sl staff, We, the Scarlette staff of l949-50, are deeply indebted to the Lafayette Printing Company, who printed the paper, for their service, co-opera- tion, and advice, to Prof. Gretchen A. Kemp of lndiana University for her ideas and advice which greatly aided and improved our publica- tion, and to Ellis Hopkins, who, as sponsor, was instrumental in the publishing of the paper
