BOW WOW 1956 WEEKSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL Weeksville, North Carolina Volume 9 -9 2194- Foluswokn ' It is our privilege to present to you the people and events that have made this year at Weeksville High School a never-to-be -forgotten one. Realizing the essential importance of each phase of school life, we have tried to cover all activities impartially. From the tiny buds of beginners who enter school with doubtful anticipa- tion, through the growing season between, to the full-blown rose of seniority, we have brought you the story, in picture, of the flowers of youth -- the future prize winners in the greatest Flower show on earth -- the American Pageant of Life. Behind the scenes, nurturing these tender plants, are the gardeners -- ad- ministrative officers, teachers, parents, friends, All of these make possible the growth from the undeveloped bud to the 'almost-mature flower. To you who have tended and nurtured these delicate specimens, to the de- lightful specimens themselves, small and large, and to those who view them both with pride, we present this 1956 yearbook with the hope that your garden of memories will be enriched by its presence, THE STAFF Co-Editors ELIZABETH FRANCES JAMES ELEANOR WRAE CARTWRIGHT DEDICATION , sr ew Q ai' '3 'N'3RGntN1c MRS, P,K, AUSLEY zany ,o-J, This dedication comes especially from the Seniors ,Ak - t who have gained so much from your guidance dur- - ' . -0104-0 ing the three years you have been our Homeroom YK-ill Teacher. Future Plans, Secretarial School and Marriage SENIOR CLASS HISTORY It was in 1952, on a bright September morning that twenty -seven green-eyed Fresh- men entered high school to begin that long, hard trip that would eventually end in graduation. That is what we hoped! ! Peggy Williams was our President, and Mrs. R. A. Whalen was our homeroom teacher, In that year Weeksville High School gained our present Principal, Mr.W.C. Morrisette, and five new teachers, Mrs. Bright, Mrs. Ausley, Mrs. Houtz, Mr. Williams, and Mrs. Whalen. What a nice clean slate to be- gin our high school career! We have kept them all but Mrs. Whalen, Our freshman year was not too exciting- a picnic at the end of that year seems to have been the high light for most of us. Twenty-seven of us became Sophomores in 1953! We had kept our original num- ber - and this year we had Mrs. Ausley for our homeroom teacher - and Billy Baker was our President, One new member, Greta Voliva, stayed with us only part of the year, Of this year, the selection of our class rings was the most outstanding event - and a picnic at Lee Farm also recalls pleasant memories. 1954 found us in the role of Juniors. Much was to be done in the way of money making, Kenneth Markham, Jr. , was our President, and it was our good fortune to retain Mrs. Ausley as our homeroom teacher. We began to work in earnest, looking ever toward the Junior-Senior to be held in May. We solicited magazines subscriptions, gave a very good Junior play, and finally made the goal! The banquet was at the Virginia Dare Hotel, and everyone spent a delightful Evening in Paris, We danced till twelve. Our grade mothers fumished refreshments for the prom. It was during this Junior year that we lost Peggy Williams and Maxine Trueblood through marriage, and Charles Wilson left to take over the farm due to the death of his father. Well, we finally made it! We're Seniors! And should we say dignified Seniors? fAsk our teachersg Nineteen of us reached this last milestone. We lost five of our members for one reason or another. Rebecca Bateman was married and Ethel Mae Cox transferred to another school while Robert Wayne Eves and Ronnie Fenton decided to re- main in the 11th grade and Jack Riddick stopped to farm, Mrs. Ausley, who has been a guiding light for us, has hopes of seeing us graduate on May 31. Tommy Bray was elected our President. We chose the red rose as our class flower, and our invitations were ordered, and mascots chosen. Durigrade parents were those who have been with us through High School. As of now, we are working on our Senior Play, and other plans include perhaps a trip in the early spring. All of which brings us closer and closer to the goal we have strived so hard to attain - graduation. These have been years that will always be remem bered. Which of us would want to forget! HiSI0l'i2.I1 Al'll'l D3ViS LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the Senior Class of 1956, being of reasonably sound mind and body, despite all the efforts of our teachers to make us otherwise, do hereby bequeath to the several lucky individuals listed below, the most prized of our possessions to be used within the period of one year to date. To Weeksville High School we leave the peace and quiet that will remain after we are gone. To Mr. Morrisette we leave our deep appreciation for making our American History course an enjoyable one. To Mrs. Ausley, our homeroom teacher for the past three years, we leave our empty seats in hope that they will be filled with more energetic pupils. To the Junior Class we leave all our Senior privileges, if they can figure out what they are. I, Willard Kent Baker, will my ability to be the object of most of Mrs. Ausley's arguments to Charles Henry James. Stick with her, Charles! I, Benny Fred Bray, will my talkative ways to Bobby Fletcher. It is fitting that we should bring the story of our school year to a close with the directory of those who have helped make this annual possible. This section of our book portrays a portion of our lives which-extends back in- to the past and stretches far into the future, as well as making the present very happy for us. As the Seniors of 1956 go out into the community as adult citizens, some of them may become part of the personnel of some of the firms named here, otherswill be life -time patrons of these firms, and all of them and all of us will always be the friends of those who stand behind us and our school. It is with pride that we present to the readersof this book our friends, the advertisers. ROBERT C.
