They are the important, the insignificant . . . the happy, the sad . . . the momentary, the pen- sive. The Monticello is each of us as a seeking individual . . . separate. lt is all of us as a group . . . unity. Yet, combined it is a separate unity. Its interpretation is different for each of us . . . look . . . remember . . . classes . . . ominous drones of typewriters, compound interest problems . . . thesis, A Farewell to Arms, s'iI vous plait, je ne peux pas le dire en francias . . . all of us having hollow minds, but challenging work . . . wonder- ing thoughts, faltering disillusions, regaining . . . stronger . . . 3:20 . . . new orange loadstars . . . home . . . football . . . chilly, sunny afternoons . . . steaming coffee and fuzzy mittons . . . hopes . . . win, lose, but no silent losers . . . cheers, pep assemblies . . . clean jerseys, clash of helmets, dirty jerseys . . . dance . . . a slow song, lurking blackness, soft looks, silent smiles, warm hands . . . a fast song, jerk, blazing lights, loud laughter . . . black and gold . . . play . . . janitor, fire- escope, TRIACC . . . gnawing fear, satisfying suc- cess . . . punch, roses and congratulations . . . curtain, saucers, AVTASP . . . basketball . . . hol- low echoing of bouncing balls . . . rebounds . . . curving shots . . . emptiness of too little time left . . . singing, band, clubs, meetings, candy sales and Saturday tournaments . . . Time screams . . . no answer, end is nearing . . . cotton candy, snow cones, empty stomachs on a shrieking racer . . . Senior review, somewhere . . . wonderful prom moments, programs and favors to cherish . . . The Monticello itself has no past . . . no future. lt is a preserving reflection of one people, one school, one year . . . l965.
