We . -s .x xx 9 The Tennis Team may bring Stuyvesant a City Championship. The team has spent the entire year practicing, and the prospects look good. A visitor to the Broome Street or Central Park tennis courts would see a frenzy of activity, and hear the plunkety-plunk of tennis ball against cat-gut, as the team's 7 varsity players prepare for their 3 singles and 2 doubles matches. Most of the work will probably be in preparation for Clinton, the traditional rival. Whatever that visitor might see, Coach Stanley Shulman would be sure to see. He has directed the team for the past six years. This year, he introduced indoor practice sessions and vigorous springtime workouts for the team. Coach Shulman looks forward to a good year. Ready for their opening game on April 8, the Stuyvesant Wallbeaters are looking forward to a very successful season. The three boys returning from last year's team tCaptain Jim Lipman and Harry Newman, both seniors, and junior Stan Blumj together with the exceptionally good players who are trying out for the first time will make both the singles and doubles teams some of the best in the city. Despite the decrease in the number of league games from 12 to 8, Coach Sheldon feels that the team will do as well or even better than last year's team, which finished with an 11 and 2 record, sixth in the city and second in the division. i Racquetmen. The Pegleg Cross-Country Squad has once more executed a very successful season. Under the adroit supervision of Mr. Moses Davis, the Harriers captured a gold trophy by placing 3rd in the PSAL Manhattan Championships. The season's best individual time was run by Captain Jon Craine, who was clocked at 14:33 for the tortuously hilly 2h mile trek. Other seniors on the team were Richie Gerson, Peter Ziemba, Edme Richen, Lanny Hecker, and Ben Davidian. The 1962-63 season looked very promising for Stuyvesant's Track Team with the return of many medal winners. The Cinder- men immediately began the season by crushing the High School of Printing, 61-11, and devastating the Brooklyn Tech team, 72-27, in the first two indoor dual meets. Captain George Kolodiy led the team, recording excellent times of 23.8 seconds in the 220-yard dash and 54.8 seconds in the quarter mile. The team then went on to defeat Sheepshead Bay, 55-44, Seward Park, 47-7, and Madison, 63-27, to complete an undefeated indoor season. Strong in spirit and ability, the team's goal was to present Coach Davis with a Manhattan Championship in both indoor and outdoor competition.
