men, knowing we will never have all the answers, only the desire to pursue them. We can think of no finer place for the transition from boyhood to manhood to take place than at STA. Growth is prompted by the people and experiences we confront. Could any group be richer in these gifts than we? The yearbook staff has assembled the journal of fhese four years of our lives with pride, effort. and love. We hope that the 1977 edition of the Kaydet will help our class to keep special these wonderful and important four years. ARCHBISHOP JOHN ROACH Archbishop John Roach has been the spiritual leader of the St. Paul Minne- apolis Archdiocese since July 16, 1075. To say that St. Thomas means something special to him would be an understatement. Archbishop Roach served the Academy from 1946 to 1968 in roles which included teacher. Dean of Boarders and Students, Director of Cadet Affairs, Director of the Acad- emy, and ultimately in 1965 he was named Headmaster. He took over the supervision of the construction of the building we now occupy. Archbishop Roach is also chairman of the Acade- my's Board of Trustees. We take great pride in our association with him. BOARD OF TRUSTEES 4 SEATED: Dr. Mark Norman. James Clark. Archbishop John R. Roach. Mrs. Florence McHugh. STANDING: Rev. Michael O’Connell. The man that we feel deserves this honor, serves the school in many capacities. He is a coach, teacher, moderator, and administrator; but we believe his greatest role is that of a friend. Therefore, we, the class of '77 proudly dedicate this yearbook to: WILLIAM J. CULBERTSON Mr. Culbertson is often seen by the underclassmen as just a mean old Gunch who tells them to get a haircut, or to go detention. But as they grow older they realize that he is a very valuable asset to the Academy. Besides being Director of Students. Moderator of the Student Council, Track Coach, and teacher, Mr. Culbertson carries out his duties beyond the classroom or playing field. He is very concerned about each student. We would like to express our appreciation for his work and wish him well in the future. 7 ERA OF NEW HEADMASTER BEGINS JAMES P. CLARK The first year at any school is always the hardest, but being new at St. Thomas is even more diffi- cult because of the vast amounts of tradition and character which is such an intrinsic part of ST A. Mr. Clark has grasped these essentials and has also gained the respect and admiration of the entire school in one short year; a formi- dable task indeed. The job of Headmaster is yet another arduous task. The role of Headmaster has so many diverse facets that any man who can suc- ceed at this position as Mr. Clark has deserves respect from all. Mr. Clark has proved to be an avid supporter of extra-curricular activities 8 WALTER C. KURTZ Mr. Kurtz is Director of Development, Alumni, and Public Relations. He does his job efficiently. Most stu- dents don't really understand his job. but without his dili- gent work in obtaining funds, financing the school would be a long uphill battle. Mr. Kurtz is friendly towards all, and becomes even friendlier after graduation. WILLIAM J. CULBERTSON Mr. Culbertson is Director of Students, Moderator of the Student Council, and also a teacher. He is usually the guy who tells you to get a haircut. But he does much more than this, such as coming out on a Friday night for a mixer, coming early Sunday morning to help clean up after a dance. But most of all Mr. Culbertson is always available when we need someone to depend on. 9 tfcadecny OFFICE STAFF MRS. PROBST - Records Officer MRS. SCHNIEDER - Business Manager MRS. Year after year the St. Thomas Academy Football Team exemplifies the meaning of what St. Thomas stands for; class, pride, striving for success, and the ability to adjust upon meeting failure. The 1976 Football Team was no exception. This year's team shared quite a lot with each other. They shared a certain pride unique to a team which could allow their opponents to keep their respect by not allowing the score to run out of control. There were many times when Coach Brown could've dictated the score. These are only a few examples of the many experiences this team shared. The 1976 Football Team was a great team and nobody will deny this. Again, as last year, the team was spear- headed by an experienced defense. However, this year the offensive unit was just as devastating as the D. All this, along with the leadership of Coach Gerry Brown, and his assistants Paul Maloney and Earl Wetzel, combined to form one of the most powerful teams in the state. Unfortunately, the season was not a total success. For most teams, an 8-1 record would be all they could ever hope for. But when one has reached 1 it is difficult to step down. This year’s team did step down, but with their heads held high and knowing in their hearts that they were the best. The 1976 Cross-Country team had an excellent season, finishing fourth in Region 3AA, missing advancing to the State Meet by two places. Pat Sullivan, who was beaten by only one runner in 10 dual meets, placed second in the Regionals with a time of 14:59.1 and advanced to the State Meet. In the State A A Cross-Country Championship, Sulli- van took 10th and became an All-State athlete. The team’s effort began in June, with Senior Co-captains John Walsh and Pat Sullivan conducting practices weekly. Besides the two captains, the only other returning veteran was the team's 3 runner Junior Dan Sullivan. With much hard work and the excellent coaching provided by D. E. Pit- kanen and Jim McHugh, the group evolved into a team which was able to defeat most of its opponents. Besides the top three, the rest of the Varsity were Frosh Dan Guerrero, Senior Mike Sabre, and Sophomores Chris Leigh and Jim Long. Above all, the season was a good time. The '76 CC season was a delightful combination of success, hard work, and sat- isfaction. Kickers Come Close VARSITY: FIRST ROW: ). Hanton. J. Adam . F. Pilney. B. Nichols. T. Yanz. C. Graves. The season was full of disappointments, but the team always came back, due to the leadership of captains Steve Orme, Paul Kcppcl, and Brian Koller. The effort put into this year's season by Coach Micheal Byrne was not wasted. The experience picked up by this year's underclassmen will be valuable next year. Captains Bill Egan and Chris Graves will lead next year's team. They should prove to be exceptional leaders since they gained much knowledge from this year's captains. Before the shear. Homecoming Dance 1976 The atmosphere surrounding the Homecoming Dance was high and spirited. The football team won the game and the school enjoyed an exciting week of activities. The dance was held on the evening of Saturday, October 16. The band. Archangel, had everybody up and stomping, with of course the three or four slow dances. The dance was well attended with 150 Cadets and their dates. The coronation ceremony was held at 11:00 p.m. with Bob Slater crowning Visitation’s Lisa Silver, escorted by our own Jim ”Doc Myler. This year’s Dance was a fine time. Gosh, this makes me Homecoming King! Congratulations! Newly-crowned Lisa Silver with escort Doc Mylcr. 44 Joan Hnath (Regina) escorted by Clarence Campbell. The week was packed full with events which stimulated to the fullest the respected and traditional spirit of STA. The Student Council played the major role in organization and follow through; they did a fine job. WE might also commend those faculty members who gave a little of their heart each time they were dunked - (in 50 degree temperatures outside the tank!). There were arm-wrestling and tug-o- war contests for the die hard competitors, a spaghetti eating contest for those with die hard stomachs and movies during lunch for those who wanted to catch a good laugh before getting back to classes. And then to top off the week, the main attraction, the football game against La Crosse on our home field - the only home game of the season. STA won 38-21. As of Tournament time, the team was 17-3 with many of those victories com- ing against impressive opposition. Six of the Cadets' wins were against teams that at one time were rated among the State’s top ten. The three early defeats were by a total of four points. The team's success could be attributed to many things. Coach Ihnot did an exceptional job of blending a talented group into an effective team. There were no real stars. The team consisted of a bunch of good athletes who worked well together and had one common goal - to get to the State Tournament. The team would like to thank the fans for their super support. The 1976-77 Swimming team carried on its winning tradi- tion in posting an 8-2 record for this year's dual meet season. After losing the first meet of the season by two points, the Tommies went to work to win eight of their last nine meets. This fine record may be credited to Coaches Joe Reyman and Jim Hickey, who pushed the tankers into logging over 200 miles in two months of practice. With co-Captains Senior Pat Sullivan and Junior John Murray leading the way, the swim- mers continued to swamp their opposition. Throughout the season, several school and pool records were broken, all by underclassmen. This year, the Cadets had more depth than they have had in a long time. Captains Mike Bradford and Tim McManus along with seniors Kevin Votel (Alt. capt.), Mark Mischke (Alt. capt.), John Ertel, Joe Sturtivant, Frank Pilney, and Mike Bann have led the Cadets to a victorious season. STA opened its season with two losses (Hill-Murray and Hastings), but bounced back with a winning season. Some of the highlights of the year were victories over Cretin and Montevideo and win- ning the Christmas Tournament in Albert Lea. One of the great moments came during the Humboldt game when STA was down 5-2, they fought back to a 5-5 tie by scoring 3 goals in 49 seconds. STA went on to defeat Humboldt 6-5 in overtime. This has been a fine year for STA hockey. And because of the array of fine underclass- men talent, STA is assured of many future victories. 62 KNEELING: B. Lcntsch. M. Zobcl. L. Pilney. M. Morgan. J. The St. Thomas Academy wrestling team, under the guidance of coaches Bruce Johnson and Jim Bard, enjoyed one of the best seasons in the last three years. The team began their season with an impres- sive victory over Brady. The rest of the season was a series of peaks and valleys; the lowest being a disappointing loss to Humboldt in the team regional tournament. Even though the grapplers were down after the Humboldt loss, they showed a great amount of pride by defeating Kellogg in the consolation bracket of the tournament. Although the team did not get as far as they hoped to, there were many highlights throughout the season. First, outstanding leadership was shown by the seniors, especially captains Jeff Fallon, Nick Hamel and Bill Koness. Another bright spot was the effort put forth by seniors Tim Walsh, Jim Gilliland, and Matt Brill. With many returning lettermen the future looks promising for the grapplers. Next year's leadership will come from talented juniors Dan Sullivan, Tom Leighton, Bill Bard, and Tim Hansen. Ay. save some of that, ya dummy. She doesn't believe me! The 1977 Regimental Ball was a great success. Over one-hundred and fifty cou- ples were in attendance for the dinner-dance, held at the Raisson South. The dinner was an excellent spread, served in buffet style. After dinner, couples migrated to the lobby to have their pictures taken or to mingle with one another and those faculty members present. The crack squad performed in the banquet hall before a spellbound crowd. The band was Sterling, one of the best local bands around, and they entertained us well until and after the coronation. The Silver Fox. It seem to us there's a stink of GASOLINE! The Saint Thomas Academy Drama Department presented its winter play, The Firebugs, by Max Frisch on Feb. 25, 26 and 27. The Firebugs is an allegorical work inspired by Hitler's takeover of Germany. The play told of a community gradually destroyed by arsonists while the ordinary citizens stood idly by. New- comer to the stage, John Sazenski and veteran actor Mike Gaworski portrayed the arsonists who took over the house of the Biedermann's, played by Joseph Nunez and Maggie Scanlan. The play combined many theatrical styles ranging from a classical chorus, led by Stephen Bohrer, through vaudeville to black farce. The play's message was that people should not allow their lives to be taken over by destructive forces without a struggle. Once again Rev. Thomas Kolar is responsible for the success of the play by his hard work through direction and design of the play. Our Junior year was a year of preparation. We prepared to assume leadership of the school, as well as doing some seri- ous thinking about college plans. This was not only a year of work, but a year of varied activities. Juniors, in increased numbers, participated in varsity athletics. Our social life became more prominent. Juniors were active in the Student Council and held key posi- tions in the organizations. Reg, mixers, and other student activities were witness to Increased Junior participation. The council was then faced with the task of distribut- ing the monies throughout the school. Many new things were added such as a universal gym, dissecting microscopes, and locker room improvements. PROMOTED TO CADET COLONEL Mr. Clark gives the Flaming, er. Fleming Sabre to Pete. Ana boy lefty. On Wednesday December 15, Peier Leyden was promoted to the rank of Cadet Colonel. In a brief and dignified ceremony, Mr. Clark presented the Fleming Sabre to Peter, a symbol of the leadership and contribution to St. Thomas, required for this, the highest honor the Academy bestows on an individual. For Peter, this was a recognition of four years of total school involvement and academic excellence. Without question, Peter exemplifies the type of student which St. Thomas Academy strives to produce. We the Senior Class, would like to congratulate Peter on his honor. 142 The God Squad. GEORGE E. LANGELAND Mr. Langeland's contributions 10 St. Thomas Academy are far loo numerous to count, but what is readily apparent is his fantastic rapport with the students. Mr. Langeland is known affectionately by many names which are also too numerous to count. A common sight at St. Thomas is Mr. Langeland jesting with students. Most students also know him as a concerned teacher. English 11 exposed many of us to the world of literature, authors and occasionally, Warner's. Though grammar is always hard to swallow, he always made the medicine go down. The Class of '77 speaks for all of Mr. Langeland's students in thanking him for his time and patience in leaching us the art of language. Thanks and Good Luck! The Class of '77.
