They realize that a knowledge of the basic classroom subjects must be supple- mented by sound principles of Christian living. They have taught us to direct our minds and wills to be conformed to those of God, our Creator, they have inspired within us the need of guiding our life's goals with two principles in mind-God and Eternity, they have given us faith in the past, courage for the present, and hope for the future. To the faculty of SBA, we are indebted. Faculty meetings help both student and teachers say Sisters Mary Michael, Teresita, and Lois Marie SC president, K. Urbanik, lights the initial taper of the Advent wreath as P. Maksimowski and fellow SC members assemble for this liturgical function. Old Glory gets a boost from SC members, K. Buchanan and J. Galla. SC represents the student's voice in school government. Our twenty-six member Council has set its sights high in hopes of creating better harmony between faculty and students, of im- pressing the importance of school privileges and their corresponding duties and obligations, and improving school spirit. 1 1 .5 -f-- . .. 7 1. Jxuusf, To Student Aides is extended the credit of building and maintaining the friendly atmosphere here at SBA and keeping order in the halls during school hours. A right arm of Student Council, this organization func- tions for the welfare of all students, offering guidance as well as service. Ever vigilant at their posts, they are always ready and willing to direct visitors and uphold student regulations. By their constant alertness, Stu- dent Aides can truly be considered helping hands to both faculty and students. Studious but alert, Student Aide R. Falconer, proves every mo- ment counts. Aides, M. Thaler and S. Hill, are at stations even before uniform regulations are effective. For P. Eastman and K. Kanis service and Stu- dent Aides are synonomous. ll fAboveJ Freshmen: J. Gloysten, M. September 2 was a memorable day for the 189 Freshies who came with mixed feel- ings of awe and anticipation to the Aca- demy that was to become their second home for the next four years. Pleasant laughter replaced shy smiles and uncertain queries became confident statements as the class saw its members gradually take their places on the J.V. basketball team, and in dra- matic, forensic, and music activities. And we are the scientists-chemists, biologists, physicists-potential rulers in this complex kingdom. It is for us to reveal, as much as man can know it, the hidden mystery and beauty of all life. At SBA we have the opportunity to study three branches of science: biology, chemistry, and general sci- ence. Each gives us a firm foun- dation for future venturing and an increased awareness of our part in the scientific world of tomorrow. 36 R. Lorei is entranced by life on the microscope stage. N. AS SBA GIRL, CAROL KOPKOWSKI, stands out, but not apart, from the other 614 girls who hail SBA as Alma Mater. Through the seasons that have marked our student days, she has been with us as friend, mediator, and model. Her loyalty, integrity, and sincerity are symbolic of that true Christian womanhood toward which we all aspire. ln her, leadership, cooperation, and friendliness are bound into one vibrant personality. Also high in student esteem, and worthy of special Commendation, are Carolyn Allgeier, Catherine Urbanik, Margaret Lynch, and Mary Rita Meyer who form a worthy court for our SBA girl. With Carol, we shall remember them as responsive, gracious, mature-rodiantly SBA. Most Rev. John Mark Gannon, D.D., D.C.L., L.L.D. Most Rev. Edward P. McManaman, S.T.D. Rt. Rev. Rt. Rev. Rt. Rev. Rt. However, with the help and guidance of these individuals: our Principal, Sister M. Theophane, OSB, and Sisters M. Kathleen, M. Hubert, and M. Leonarda, senior yearbook advisors, we found the publcation of our '58 Scholastican a pleasant experience. Also, the professional and friendly interest of our photographer, Mr. A. L. Shumaker of Shumaker Studios, of our representative from Kurtz Bros., Mr. Alex Zebrun, and Mr. Milo Zimmerman of Zimmerman Engraving, made our task easier. Our patrons-clergy, business, family, and friends-supported us financially, and we are grateful. To all others, thanks for your cooperation, interest, and confidence in our undertaking. 90' MCDONALD BROTHERS, REPRESENTING .lOSTEN'S 920 Investment Bldg. Pittsburgh 22, Pa.
