OUR PRINCIPAL DEAN R. SHAWBOLD You have had more than your share of varied activities during your three years at South. Your class is the first to graduate with three full years of modular scheduling. You all participated in the ground breaking for the long awaited new school and dedicated our new football field, which by the way will be lighted and also have an electronic scoreboard. You witnessed the laying of a cornerstone with momentos of your own choosing. Yours is the last class completing your education in the old South High School, and the first class graduating from the new South High School, presently the only comprehensive school in Minneapolis. You have had many happy experiences during this time and I expect you will remember them throughout your life. Best wishes and may all of you be successful and happy in your future endeavors. It has been a great experience for me to have had the opportunity of being associated with all of you. Sincerely,

TABLE OF CONTENTS ACTIVITIES 8 ORGANIZATIONS 22 SPORTS 48 FACULTY 68 UNDERCLASSMEN 78 SENIORS 90 We, the graduating class of Nineteen-Seventy, are very fortunate. We have experienced much throughout our three years at South. We have been part of a complete educational change, all the way from the reality of a new school building to a new system of scheduling. Another aspect, a more important one, has been the change in our lives. Along with those changes come contrasts — contrasts between the old and the new, between what was and what is. That's why we have chosen contrasts as the theme of this annual. It also is an excellent opportunity to give a pictorial history of South High — it shows all of the changes this school has gone through. In this yearbook we have tried to capture and record these changes and contrasts. Now we have a future to plan, so we musn't dwell entirely on the past, yet it cannot be forgotten. This South High School which has grown old, soon will be replaced. But we know that through the years it has accomplished many great things; it has affected and educated many lives. As a result there is that feeling within these worn-out halls and shattered windows that the new school will not, and cannot, possess. To us, South High is more than a school; it's more than a place to be educated. It's a place where we can meet other people, where we can find ourselves. It's a place to plan one's life, to make that life worth living. Before this school is a building of the past, it should be thanked for what it has done, for what it is, for just being South. The most appropriate way we can express our gratitude to South High is to dedicate this yearbook to the old South, and that's exactly what we've done! Tiger Staff 70

ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS KEITH R. OLSEN Mr. Marchuck has returned to South after a short leave of absence. This school year he has had the position of Assistant Principal. His guidance and friendliness were deeply appreciated by all students. His qualities as a leader were exemplified in every decision he made. Mr. Marchuck, we sincerely thank you. You can be justly proud of the 1969-70 school year. This year's senior class is the first one to have completed three years of education under our modular system. You have accepted the many challenges and responsibilities well. As you leave South, you are entering an era filled with opportunities. Best wishes to each and every one of you. STEPHEN MARCHUCK Dear Students, My first year at South has been as interesting and challenging for me as I hope that it has been for you. It has been interesting meeting and working with the faculty, staff, and students. Being the Assistant Principal for the sophomores has been interesting and fruitful. We have set our goals high and have attempted to live up to “being the best class of the Old and the New South High School . May we all have a pleasant and profitable summer. May we return to New South prepared for another interesting and challenging year. £4 5 GEORGE KNUTSON
