Sousa 57 58 59 60 CASE RALLY SENIORS THE ’86 CASE RALLY After four years of either coming in last place or being disqualified by last- minute rules, the SENIOR CLASS of ’87 finally pulled it off. WE WON the Case Rally. This year it was Coach T.’s turn in the hot seat, sort of an initiation as first year head coach. The superior winning SENIOR script dealt with Coach T.’s search for the key to victory. As they search for the key, Coach T. and his sidekick Gerry (Chris Chasse and Andy Buckley) meet an odd assortment of characters, including Snow White, Peter Pan, Diaper Man, and Madonna (Tara MacDonald, Todd Plosker, Rob DeMoura, and Kelly Finnerty). Most notable were the performances of Liz Furtado and Ed Judge in their roles of Pee Wee Herman and Rambo. Ed also helped to lead the class cheer. The sophomore and the freshman came in second and third place respec¬ tively with only a point difference. The dismal juniors deservedly came in last place, and it serves them right for stealing Our cheer (even if the SENIORS did do it better). The ’86 Rally proved once again that the seniors rule the school. A.B. The team was energetic, hard¬ working, and dedicated. Some highlights of the season were the following: the boys’ win over Stang, the girls’ win over Coyle-Cassidy and over Case, and the many record- breaking races of Christine Hopkins. Chris made it to the All-State meet and ran in New York for the regionals. It was a successful season for the “BIG BLUE MA¬ CHINE”. This year’s RAIDERS were led by four-year veterans-Tim Collins, Chris Hopkins, Elisabeth Furtado- and next year’s team will be led by: Pat Lockett, Karen Dubriel, Heidi Thompson, and Dave Sullivan. None of our accomplishments could ever be achieved without the support and gu idance of our coach-COACH B!!! Kneeling: Sandy Towers, Crissy Cwikla, Heidi Frizado, Captains: Tara McDonald, April Blankenship, and Pam Blake, Diane Bernardo, Lisa Geary, Jessiaca Scholes Standing: Assistant coach Cheryl Medeiros, Kara Kelley, Kathy Mendes, Shelly Borges, Racheal Frizado, Michelle Marien, Melissa Martin, Kim Miranda, Krya Maggiacomo, Karen Gray, and Head Coach Susan Curt. Missing from photo: Captain Cheryl lodice FIELD HOCKEY The Feild Hockey season of 1986 turned out to be an unforgetable one. Their sea¬ son began in the early days of July, with weekly weight room workouts and jogs across town. Formal practice began in August, headed first by the four co-cap¬ tains; April Blankenship, Cheryl lodice, Pam Blake, and Tara McDonald, and then by head coach Sue Curt. From the very beginning, the Raiders were a defi¬ nite threat to the entire Southeastern Massachusetts Conferance, and they dominated most games. With the help of team standouts, such as goalie Kathy Mendes, halfback Lisa Geary, and for¬ wards Diane Bernado and Krissy Cwikla, the team strived toward their ultimate goal of the state tournament. They com¬ pleted many challenging and memorable games, and faced such rivals as the D-Y Dolphins and the Case Cardinals boasting two wins against our arch enemies, the Cardinals. After hard work and dedica¬ tion to the team, the school, and them¬ selves, the Raiders entered the State Tournament with a game against Need¬ ham. They accomplished the first part of their goal by crushing this team with a 6-0 record breaking score. They faced defeat with their next match against State Cham¬ pions Walpole, but walked off the feild with the pride of knowing what dedica¬ tion, team work, and togetherness can really do for a team. ■ mm r ' m .. . • ' - t . • A 87 SOCCER Standing: Coach Horton, Rick Vasconcellos, Matt White, John Hinves Kevin Foley, Chris Ouellete, Andy Cromby, Rick Swain, Kneeling: Matt Thibault, Jamie Lynch, Thad Ward, Matt Francis, Mike Faria, Brian Aguiar, Bob Garcia. Sitting: Marc Cardinal, Brian Millar, Scott Medeiros, Mike Sousa, Paul Faria, Keith Arruda, Brendan O’Toole The 1986 Somerset High Soccer team fin¬ ished the season with a 3-4-1 league record, bringing the team into third place in Division II. The team’s overall record was 4-11-3 with impressive games against Division I powere- house teams: Durfee (2-2), and New Bedford ( 0 - 2 ). Captained by Mike Sousa, Scott Medeiros, and Paul Faria, the team had only two re¬ turning starters, and many first time players. Nevertheless, the team worked hard togeth¬ er, scoring a total of 17 goals, some first time players even improved enough to be¬ come starters. Two players, starters Mike Sousa and Thad Ward were nominated to the Herald News All Star Team. 88 VOLLEYBALL The 1986 Volleyball season was a rebuilding one. Only returning one starter and having a new coach, Ted Porada, did did not cause a problem for the Raiders until the middle of the season. The team jumped out to a 5-1 record, until the lack of experience set in. From this point on, the season had its ups and downs. The toughest and most exciting matches where the ones that were stretched to three games. These were against Case, S.E.M.C. Division 1 State Champs, and Durfee, S.E.M.C. Division I League Champs. Although they were recorded as losses, those three matches were the team’s best outings. The final record of the season was eight wins and ten defeats. Senior Captain Jennifer How¬ ard was named to the S.E.M.C. Division I All Star Team and the Fall River Herald News All Star Team. Next year’s Captain will be junior Lisa Mongeon. The seniors along with juniors and sophomores were loyal and dedicated. The captaines were Mike Petrillo, Ed judge, and Todd DiManno. Chris Chasse received the Paul Wayne Ferris Memorial Award. Dan Rockcliffe won the P.M.A. Award. Scott Jasparro won the Coaches’ Award. The team’s offensive M.V.P. award went to Frank Travassos who had eigh¬ teen receptions. Ed Judge was the team’s de¬ fensive M.V.P. along with the nomination for the Otto Graham Award. Ed and Todd Di¬ Manno were selected to the Southeastern Mass. The season, which lasted for eight months, started in April and ended late November. The sixteen girls practiced hard all summer to perfect their new, jazzy style of crisp, short cheers and newly acquired hand hoops. The football cheerleaders were captained by senior Susan Arruda and coached by Mrs. Sheila Ward Because the girls must try out every season, a new squad was selected for the 1986-87 basketball season. Stacey Souza was chosen as captain and the squad was coached by Sue Curt and Sheila Ward. The basketball cheerleading squad continued to demonstrate their new style. The new way of cheering was complemented by short one word cheers. The fourteen girls even stood up in the stands during each basketball game. Though the football and basketball cheerleaders did not compete as a team, they were considered a varsity sport. The Somerset High School Cheerleaders were an important part of the total team effort with their never ending spirit and enthusiasm. We’ve worked hard over the years and we have accomplished quite a lot. Our senior year hass been a memorable one. There were many changes. We won the Case Rally. We ventured to New York. And, we proved ourselves to one of the most enthusiastic senior classes ever to come through Somerset High School. In remembering everything we’ve done, I can’t forget the many people who have helped us along the way. The teachers, administrators, coaches, and the rest of the staff were all instrumental in helping us through Somerset High. I would like to thank the officers and representatives who served our class this year. Liz Furtado, Dee De¬ Marco, Jodi Velozo, and Marc Haslam did a great job serving our class to the fullest. I would also like to thank, Mr. Ken Day, who helped us in everything we did this year. Above all, thanks to the members of the class of ’87. You made serving the class as president very enjoyable. Good luck and best wishes to everyone. OUR YEARS AT SHS: A RETROSPECTIVE BY NEIL SWIDEY FRESHMAN YEAR: INITIATION INTO THE SCHOOL CELLAR W e entered as freshman. Intimidated slightly by the overwhelming new¬ ness of Somerset High School, we started slowly. By the first week, though, most of us had discovered at least how to get to our classes (except study hall in room 511 — “Where the heck is 511, anyway?”). We were cau¬ tious and quiet for the most part. Not yet participating, we were merely absorbing at this point. We were always on time for class, providing we knew how to get there. By mid-year we felt more secure at SHS. We knew our way around. We were wise to the ploys of upperclassmen. Conse¬ quently, sales of elevator passes had de¬ creased appreciably by this time. Towards the end of the year, we were ready to climb out of the “cellar of SHS” and become sophomores. We were tired of freshmen life — tired of study hall, tired of the “freshman tables” in the li¬ brary, and tired of the countless lectures we had received on “the immaturity of the freshman class.” We were anxious to shed our sub-human status. SOPHOMORE YEAR: THE SAGA CONTINUES We were finally sophomores — integral (?) members of the elite SHS community. Free periods — we finally had them. We could now look down upon the freshmen still stuck in the shackles of frosh life. Though we could identify with them, we showed no mercy in gloating about our newly-acquired “freedom”. Academically, sophomore year present¬ ed most of us with a markedly tougher schedule than we had been used to in the past. The demands of our classes intensi¬ fied; our workloads increased. A typical teacher admonition went something like this: “1 am not going to take you by the hand as your teachers did last year. You will have to become independent.” ■Jr As the year neared its end, we became tired once again. We were tired of the workload, tired of being booted from the library ritualistically, and most important¬ ly, tired of listening to each of our teach¬ ers explain how “sophomore” meant “wise fool”, and how we fit perfectly into this paradoxical category. It was time to move on. JUNIOR YEAR: IT CAN’T BE MUCH LONGER NOW Junior year brought us full status as up¬ perclassmen. Nice title, but what did it give us? Answer: not much. Regardless, junior year brought us some real changes. Many of us had tougher classes and part- time jobs, and during this year, most of us finally obtained those coveted driver’s licenses. We could handle the tougher classes. Though we were told they would require much homework and studying, well, we could get around that somehow. And we did. We could also handle the part-time job. It was even enjoyable at first — new peo¬ ple, new experience, and above all, extra cash. After a while, though, it became just another chore, a drudgery which we had to tolerate. The driver’s license most of us got during our junior year was long-awaited. Now this was freedom. We no longer had to wait for rides — we could drive our¬ selves. We were even allowed to, brace yourself, park in none other than the SHS student parking lot. Who could ask for more? Junior year ended with nagging from our parents and guidance counselors to start looking.around at colleges. “Come down and use the Career Resource Computer — it’s an invaluable tool” could be fre¬ quently heard. Though the temptation to drop everything, sprint down to the guid¬ ance office, and put our future in the hands of a machine with the program¬ ming capabilities of a pencil sharpener was strong, most of us, nonetheless, re¬ sisted. We were not yet prepared to deal with those momentous decisions. They were a whole year away. We just wanted senior year. SENIOR YEAR: HAND OVER MY DIPLOMA AND I’M HISTORY It was finally here. We were actually se¬ niors. Just three years earlier we were condemning the cycle which relegated us to the bottom of the totem pole. Now that we were at the top, we praised it. As seniors, some of us chose to take the traditional “stem” course schedule. Oth¬ ers among us elected the harder courses that were offered. Either way, our minds were elsewhere. For senior year not only brought us top status at SHS, it also brought us the unavoidable decisions we would have to make for our future. Some of us had to choose a college. We were forced to fill out those ridiculous applications, go on palm-sweating inter¬ views, and attend those boring, shallow campus tours. Those of us choosing to go directly into the workforce after gradua¬ tion would also be faced with the rigma¬ role of those tedious applications and in¬ terviews. F or many of us, the process left its sting: our energy level was decidedly diminished and our ego, somewhat bruised. At this writing, we are midway through the year. With second term over, teach¬ ers are bracing themselves for the pheno¬ menon! known as “senioritis”, which is about to overcome us. This perennial atti¬ tude shift of seniors from concern to apa¬ thy unnerves our teachers. For us, it is the long-awaited chance to say, “Who cares?” instead of “When is it due?” Graduation looms in the near futu await it with mixed feelings. Thou finally bring the freedom we longed for, it will also bring an ain future. Hopefully, we will all r out fine.
