P - V OUR RETURN In years from now when older, wiser, we return To look back in on well-known rooms and cherished nooks, We may recall some long-outdated urge to learn When gazing through those double doors at endless books. We’ll contemplate the choir room’s broad, ascending tiers While bits of old refrains run through our hazy minds. The laboratory down the hall brings back those fears Concerning unidentified “unknowns” and “finds.” We’ll vision touchdowns, marching bands, and girls in jeans While noticing the football field in just a glance; Surveying both the gyms will call up varied scenes, — A lively game of basketball, a special dance And only when we leave once more the hallowed halls And turn our backs on yesterday’s good times and fun, A homesick feeling taunts, a gloomy thought appals,— Perhaps our finest, grandest days of life are done. 39

Fall rolls around and practice begins for another football season . . . veterans return: Weizer, Rosser, Cook, Calvin, Dawson . . . muscles ache and joints groan as men are whipped into shape . . . footballs fill the air . . . running, blocking, tackling men go through plays. . . earnest prepa¬ ration for opener, and Raiders down South High 20-12 at Shaker Field . . . a bus ride to Cuyahoga Falls, and Shaker emerges on top of a 7-0 score . . . gaps which appear in line-up due to injuries are temporarily filled . . . back to Shaker we meet Elyria who edges the Raiders 7-6; Calder out for the season ... a trip to Shaw for annual night game; a close, hard-fought battle ends in 6-6 tie ... a visit to powerful Lorain, and Raiders go down 41
