First, to use as our theme this year the Don , which sym- bolizes our school and has never been emphasized or portrayed in the Olive and Gold. Second, to make it possible for you in future years to recall your high school friends and acquaintances. We have tried to se- cure pictures of everyone in the school. Third, to picture the school life of Santa Barbara High during the year 1941-42. Fourth, to list, as completely as possible, all former Santa Barbara High School students now serving in the armed forces. We believe that these people deserve special recognition for serving their country. The Olive and Gold Staff this year has enjoyed compiling this book for the pleasure, entertainment, and information it can give each and every one of you. If you find these qualities in the following pages as you turn them, we will be thoroughly satisfied. THE OLIVE AND GOLD STAFF N 1 E 3 In years to come, when you With much amused look Cast reminiscent eyes Upon this book, Recall with longing All the happy times you spent Within the walls of this your school While here your twig was bent, Regard the 'Atree f- The finished product, grown To fit the niche of life You call your own- A tree supported by the principles That linger on- The gallantry, the honesty, within The Spirit of the Don. The homemaker must be informed in many arts, a manager, a hostess, a gardner, as well as an interesting companion. The Home Arts classes, meeting at the prac- tice house at El Faro, study these problems in a combined vocational homemaking and maid service course. The girls plan, prepare, and serve well-balanced meals on a family basis. They study consumer education in order that they can make the family dollar go farther to- ward purchasing the food, clothing, and house- hold equipment. Defense Committee The Emergency Defense Committee was created by an act of the Student Legislaturei on Ianuary 16, 1942. lts purpose is to seek out, initiate, and if desirable, supervise activities helpful to the nation's war effort in which the students may participate. Among its activities are: the selling of defense stamps, confirming and denying of rumors, and cooperating with the Office of Price Administration to educate Santa Barbara High School students in how they, as consumers, may best save for Victory. As a part of this program students were asked to walk to school to save their tires. P Q, 9 if A' i H! The new show has a double purpose. First, to present entertainingly the various aspects of school life with high school talent. Second, to give special training in speech and radio work to those who particularly wish it. This year the programs have been put on by the advanced students in speech work, and interest has grown so that the plan will be carried on in the future. The war has brought about a demand for radio technicians and, in recent months, radio announcers. Plans are being perfected now by Mr. john S. Greene to inaugurate a training system for announcers for KDB. Those who show particular ability will be absorbed into the Don-Lee Mutual Network. Mr. ,Iohn S. Since the lovable Chief Wallace was forced to abandon his pet project in ,Ianuarv when sumed Mrs. Charlotte Elmott's position as director of vocational guidance, Dixon MacQuiddy took over the paper for three months. Efficient Kay Bishop, the present preceptor, replaced him when he became temporarv director of visual education. ln spite of the resulting confusion, The Forge ' again won All American honor rating for its high quality. the be- he as- Unassuming, energetic Marge Morrison was the guiding light for the l94l-42 student publication. Her able assistants were vivacious, diminutive ,leanne Skip Ehrenborg, assistant editor, and the ever helpful Elsie Cascadden, copy editor. Charles Metz, loquacious, friendly business manager, and Mal Morehouse. the lanky, intent sports editor represented the masculine side of the student sheet. Other edi- tors included: Madge Haskin, newsg Rosalie Osborne, feature: Will Campbell, ex- change: Don McCloskey, assistant sports, and George Corn, assistant business. ln addition there were about a dozen reporters. Clive and Gold Staii Assistant Editor Phyllis Lavery Business Manager Bob Profant H Since the selection of sixteen capable persons last October to form the l942 Olive and Gold Staff, it has been working harmoniously and continuously to meet one objective, the completion of a book for you, the students of Santa Barbara High School. What would this book be if it weren't for the pictures? You may thank Willie Ginn for them. ljlot only did he take the pictures, but spent a large part of his time developing and printing them. Lrewtl is also due for the capable assistance of Hurley Robinson, Bob Kallman, and jimmy Ellison to i lie. Erratic Bob Profant, business manager, with the aid of energetic Mary Ellen Roberts finally solved the financial problems of the book. The division pages and general layout of the pictures were created by easy-going Flo Record. Carolyn Putty Putman also lent her artistic touch. To slow, but amiable Mal Morehouse, go the laurels of the sports section and the creation of the Don whose likeness appears on the pages of this book. Without the general assistance of conscientious Elizabeth Fairchild, demure Barbara Hoge, gar- rulous joyce Roberts, and the inseparable twins, Evelyn Hamilton and Virginia Parker, exacting editor joyce Verrill, and likeable Phyllis Lavery, assistant editor, could not have rounded up the gang to meet the deadline. Our congenial advisor, Llewellyn Goodfield, inspired us all to greater lengths with his ever ready humor and gaiety. Lorenzo Blanco, Charles Machado Santa Barbara High School may well be proud of its R.O,T.C. unit, which is under the instruction of Major Carl Ballinger and Sergeant A. I. Shelton. R.O.T'.C. training has become of major importance this year because of the international situation. Although the Cadets who have had training will not be called for duty before any other boys, they will have had this previous training and will be able to adapt themselves to the army life much more easily. This spring the. R.O.T.C. moved into the new building recently built for the R.O.T.C. and gym training. The R.O.T.C. section has two large class rooms, one especially equipped for the showing of war department training films, one large locker room, a private of- fice for the major, an orderly room which is Sergeant Shelton's office, a rifle room with steel rifle racks, and a 50-foot indoor rifle range with over head target carriers and heavy steel plate backstops. With the help of this new building the battalion has high hopes of becoming the honor unit of the 9th Corps Area, which will be decided after federal inspection. The battalion was inspected by Col- onel He-rman Kobbe on May 14, 1942. . R.O.T.C. OFFICERS Bottom Row: Major Carl Ballinger, B. Kelley, captain: ,I. Weyler, captain: B. Herdman, major: D. After primary training in Miami, Florida. the for- mer Don coach will be stationed at Maxwell Field, Montgohiery, Ala- bama. With passing as the keynote to successful victories, the 1941 Golden Tornado was truly one of the best and most deter- mined squads ever to grace Peabody Stadium's gridiron. Taking on a merciless schedule which included all the great prep teams in the Big Seventeen Conference, the hard fighting Dons staved off defeat until injury-riddled and completely exhausted, they fell easy prey to the: lightning-fast attack of the Pasa- dena Bullpups in the semi-finals of the C.l.F. play-offs. Under the guidance of the mastermind Don mentor, Clarence Schuttef, the Dons showed the townsfolk the most amazing razzle-dazzle football ever seen in even these aerial-minded parts. Schutte mixed his famous Schutte-spread and the equally fam- ous T formation with such a deft hand that nine enemy elevens in a row fell prey to his system. The season was highlighted by the plays of not one, but several varsity men, all with their own brand of ball which gave the Dons an inexhaustable supply of surprises. Long to be remembered by all high school students were the ..,, .,-,.,-,. passes of sharpshooting Rube Navarro, the pass completion made possible by Gene Mangini's sticky fingers, Charlie Gartrell's line work, Iimmy Christopher's head-on rushes through enemy lines, Roy Forney's fleet-footed running, Stan Murphy's unfailing ball hand- ling, Harold Bowman's educated toe, and the under-size line's gal- lant work. Also on the Vaqueros' lengthening honor list is that ever-mirthful captain Marshall Romer, who was rewarded this year for his bril- liant work at end position by being unanimously chosen as a member of the 1941 All-C.I.F. Football Tefam. His generalship and playing will undoubtedly long be remembered by elnemy players who faced him on the turf. Win or lose, the 19-il edition of the Golden Tornado will stand out vividly in most football fan's minds as the greatest thrill-provok- ing club to play for Coach Schutte and line Coach Clarence Bishop during their long coaching careers. Captain Marshall Romer , x l X Using the rediscovered T formation, the golden clad gridders opened their 1942 season by sweeping over a bewildered Santa Paula eleven by a stunning 'H-0 count. Rube Navarro, the sensational junior, ope-ned the season's campaign by scoring on a twenty-one yard jaunt. Following Rube's opening tally, Harold Bowman, Cal Rossi, Roy Forney, and Gene Mangini crossed the southe-rners goal before the half time, to give the Dons a safe 30-O lead. Cal Rossi and Sila Chackel added the final touchdowns to the high-scoring game in the second half. Conversions were made by Larry Lafond and Harold Bowman. Above: Frank Greenwo0d Center: Rube Navarro Below: Al Romer Continuing their blistering attack, the Don grid machine completely annihilated the Beverly Hills Normans 39-0. Emf ploying a terrific passing offensive, the Vaqueros were never in trouble. Touchdowns by Iimmy Christopher and Harold Bowman gave the Dons a handy half-time advantage. In the second half the un- tiring Dons overran the Normans when Bowman scored his sec- ond six points and Captain Marshall Romer and Larry Lafond ac- counted for two touchdowns. The Dons, in one of the hardest fought games of the season. battered down a tough squad from Long Beach Poly by a 13-7 count. The first touchdown for the locals came in the first quarter, when Harold Bowman blasted over from the four yard marker, climaxing a long drive down field. The final tally of the half occurred in the closing minutes, on an eleven yard dash by Iiinmy Christophe-r, after a sixty yard pass by Navarro to Maili- gini had set the stage. Rube Navarro continued his terrific passing in the second half, tossing a beautiful aerial to Cal Rossi who scored standing up. In the opening minutes, the Dons marched down the mud covered grid- iron to score on a pass to Gene Mangini. Iimmy Christopher, Rube Navarro, and Harold Bowman chalked up the other three touchdoynms against an overrated red and white squad. Bowman added the extra points. The building is completelv modern throughout, with classrooms constructed along the same lines as those in the new wing. Also one room is provided with opaque blinds and a motion picture screen, which has been extremely valuable in the showing of govern- ment and physical training pictures. For the R.O.T.C. classes, there are: an indoor riHe range, a new double-locked gun room, and a locker room. The section devoted to physical education includes, besides up-to-date showers, a corrective room, a drying room for uniforms a locker room equipped with 546 lockers, and a smalI varsity room. Charlie Graham ran up the final score in the fourth quarter with another long run. Harold Bowman added three points through his conversions. Battling all the way, the Glendale Dynamiters were the Don's ninth straight victim, dropping a 14-13 decision. Cal Rossi scored the opening six points on a pass from Rube Navarro. Jimmy Christopher scored the third quarter to give the Dons their margin of victory. Bowman again booted the winning point. Staging a remarkablee comeback, the Dons managed to gain a 13-13 tie with an under-rated Tuscon Badger eleven in the desert city. Trailing by 13 points, the Dons finally crossed the Badger goal in the second quarter when the Navarro to Mangini combination clicked again. Bowman added the extra point. Iimmy Christopher blasted over the tying touchdown for the Dons. The injury-'riddled Dons finally tasted bitter defeat when a lightning-fast eleven representing Pasadena High School handed them a startling 29-13 setback before 7,000 unbelieving townfolk in the first round of then C.1.F. playoffs. Employing a beautifully executed fake-double-reverse, the Bullpups recovered from a shaky start to outmaneuver the game, but tired Dons. Navarro, passing at his best, threiw the only other touchdown pass to Larry Lafond in the last quarter, With the eleventh game completed, certain players remained as the outstand- ing otfensive men on the star-studded Golden Tornado squad that won nine games, tied one, and suffered a single defeat during the long season. Harold Bowman, the broad-shouldered quarterback, paced the Don scorers, during the 1941 campaign, collecting fifty-three points on six touchdowns and seventeen conversions. The sensational end, Gene Mangini, was second highest scorer on the Don grid machine with thirty-six points. Cal Rossi, the fleet-footed junior, was third, tallying five touchdowns. The leading passer on the Don team was sharpshooting Rube Navarro, whose passes found their marks better than half of the time. His passes netted the' Dons more than seven hundred yards in eleven games. Iimmy Christopher, Rube Navarro, and Roy Forney shared top honors among the yard gainers, with Iimmy alone running over four hundred and se-venty-five yards during the season. With the tennis and other intramural sports, a well planned sports program was offered for the pleasure and excitement of many boys who would be unable to make the regular varsity squads and find this type of sports a valuable outlet for their talents. Participation in girls' seasonal sports for 1941 and 1942 has been very good, with San- ta Barbara receiving many high honors in the annual play day held in Oxnard last fall. Because subsequent inter-school plays were banned due to war regulations, our school held a Defense Day sport affair which was well attended. The Ojai tennis tournament, featuring ranking tennis players from various schools, was held in April. Ioy Hiestand, Ruth Lang- mack, and Lorraine Delbrook represented Santa Barbara High. Ioy reached the se-mi- finals in a manner which caused spectators to liken her form to that of Louise Brough. Womens' National Champion. Ruth and Lorraine, giving their opponents fast com- petition, went down in the quarter finals. Although eliminated in the first round, Eve- lyn McKinstry, a very promising player, showed a smooth defensive game. Sports Members of the dance class, Twila Iohnson, Mary Ann Acquistapace. Dorothy Iiminez, and Rosalie Viscarra made several original dance performances for the Men's Service Clubs, the soldiers, and at the Scandals where they were honored with first prize, Baseball was a pop- ular sport with Lucille Ross and Virginia Garno out- standing catcher and pitcher respectively. Enthusiasts in basketball weret so many that outstanding shooters were difficult to choose. Ace high badminton players were Suzanne Murray and Rosie Rossibertolli who showed unusual skill. Hockey is a very fast game, but none too fast for Elsie Bruno and Edith Skinner who were known well for their playing. Popularity of all girls' sports was evidenced by the large numbers of girls participating in them after school. Girls may become more skilled in their favorite sport by taking it after school as well as during their gym per- iod to earn points toward their varsity sweater. 4 , AX, 'P Q J' Gf ..
