Varsity to recall 3-7 record as season of EAR MISSES The 1984 Hornet football season ended with a disappointing 3-7 record and the resignation of Head Coach Roger Secreast, who was only in his second year at Salisbury. The Hornets were handed their two beginning losses by the Concord Spi- ders 7-6, and the East Rowan Mus- tangs 18-O. The Hornets bounced back to sting the Asheboro Blue Comets with a 10- 7 defeat. This win gave the Hornets the fire they had lacked at the be- ginning of the season. The North-Salisbury game is al- ways an emotional one for both teams, and this year's game proved to be no exception. The Cavaliers jumped to a 7-O lead early in the first half and held the Hornets off until the third quarter. With 6:26 left in the third quarter, Bruce Titus threw a 21- yard pass to Raymond Taylor for six points. Joseph Bombo tied the score 7-7 with an extra point kick. North again took the lead with a field goal early in the fourth quarter to make the score 10-7. But the score was tied again when Joseph Bombo Seniors Bruce Titus and Jeff Wood prepare to make some yardage in the air against Trinity. Hornets plan strategy before the game. 106 booted a 31-yard field goal that sent the game into overtime. Salisbury won the coin toss, taking first possession of the ball in over- time. Philip Oglesby scored on a six- yard run to take the lead and the final points in the game. Next, North at- tempted to score, but on the second down fumbled, Salisbury's defensive tackle Chico Colson recovered. The Hornets went on to upset the Cava- liers, 16-10. The Hornets' next five games were ones of frustration and disappoint- ment. The Hornets' loss to the North Davidson Black Knights, 14-7, kicked off a five-game losing streak. On Oct. 12, the Hornet Homecom- ing ended in disaster as the Trinity Bulldogs defeated Salisbury by a baseball-like score of 3-2. Some positive things did come from the season. Robbie Linder, Salis- bury's punter, made the All-Piedmont, All-Conference, and All-County teams. Andre Alexander, Derek Bratcher, and Chuck Mills also made the All-County team. ,A W l ft. 4-' . ., f. 1 .f ,B -t, Vg, 1 , .,,,,,, nys' f J ill. ff' wt., 'iv va ' ., f, ?,,,.A,,W3, ,, -, W , ,H , it-

Freshmen and sophomores of SHS show that there IS VICTORY O THE FIELD The 1984 J.V. football season closed on a promising note as the team de- feated West Rowan 26-14. The game enabled Salisbury to be victors over all the Rowan County teams they played, after earlier victories over East C21-145 and North Q12-65. The Hornets also won against Tho- masville 14-8. Preventing a losing sea- son, Salisbury tied Concord and Ashe- boro. At home against Concord, Salis- bury scored late in the game to even things up at 14-14. Against Asheboro, Salisbury returned the opening kick- off for a touchdown, Asheboro scored its only touchdown on the second half kickoff. As both teams missed their conversion attempts, the game ended in a 6-6 tie. Teamwork was the word to de- scribe the J.V. Hornets' effort this year.
