Added to the strength of these was some line material around which Coach Schanlaub built up one of the best teams we have had in years. Special credit should be given the second team and those players who came out every night and helped to make the varsity a success. The opening scene was staged in Lyon Hall in a game with Browns- town. The locals surely did their stuff and downed the opposing team 25-20. The excellent guarding of Hardy and Garriott was the main feature in the winning of the game. ' The Salemites next journeyed to Paoli and met their quintet in a slow, one-sided battle. They were Elbert Morris, the noted engineer, Bill Brown, the widely known humorist, and Frank Martin, the prominent gun manufacturer. As these great men sat at their ease they were talking about a story that had appeared in the Lyon in 1926, entitled, A Trip to Mars. They began to talk about how they would do if they were to want to go to Mars. At first jestingly, but after awhile seriously. 'X'Vhen they disbanded that night they had decided to try the trip. Frank was to make a gun half a mile long, Bill was to make a shell weighing two hundred thousand pounds, and Elbert was to figure out how fast they would have to go, how much powder they would need and the exact time for their departure. For the next hve years men labored to make the cannon, which g i My was to be built at Salem. At last everything was ready. At three and one-fourth seconds after half past three of November twenty-third, the huge shell, bearing the three men, started for Mars. I l The trip was uneventful with the exception of one time when they is l 1 1 glanced off a falling star. This so changed their course that they would g l have never reached their destination if Frank had not exploded a l l rocket at one end of the shell, which brought them back in their true 2 l l course. 0 l In four days they landed on Mars. They were all delighted with li i l their trip except Bill who grumbled because they had landed on a ' ' j- mountain and would have to walk down. VVhen they reached the bot- ii i tom they were met by the King and Queen who had seen them afar ifhi . ,: off. They were just like the people on Earth except they were more 5 handsome. 2 For three years the adventurers dwelt on Mars. They never ceased WJ to wonder at the civilization of the people there, which was two thou- W ll' J sand years in advance of the one on Earth. The women had wings but lm the men did not, therefore the men had a hard time getting a wife. All the necessities of life grew on trees, causing their money, which was made of wood, to be of little value. The men had no intention to return to Earth. VVhy should they? There were not the large cities of today to hinder his progress. He could go from one part of the country to another without getting caught by trafiic policemen at stop signs. Also if he wanted to stop by the side of the path which his fathers had trodden for centuries, or park on the limb by the side of his tree road, in other words, if he wanted to go out on a limb he would not be pinched as most people are in this day and age. tPinched is a slang expression for Twenty dollars and costs. J The monkey traveled either by day or night or not at all. He nearly always traveled by swinging from tree to tree or by walking on .12 .222 1 ,il nl' ' l I at .ill x 5.5 Fig ffl: z., il' i il' I ,jig the ground. Most authorities agree that man is far superior to the fy fm monkey in this respect. Man invented the aeroplane and it is said the A ' monkey never thought of such a thing. llt may seem that this informa- ' , tion about the aeroplane is off the subject but variety is the spice of T life.J I! L By centuries of practice the monkey had become very proficient in ,I l the tree, so by the time that this article chronicles he was obtaining 1? 2 most all his food from nuts or tree fruit. Being by nature a herbivor- 0 ous animal, the monkey waxed strong physically. He always picked the nuts with his right hand, holding to the limb T g with his left hand, two feet and tail. The monkey's tail acted very 1 much as a safety factor does in mechanics today-always something to fall back on. Many people have noticed the monkey yet today has a , A ii i slight curl in his tail. This is caused by the fact that long ago when a i ln ! picking nuts from trees in the dark jungles of Brown County, he either '. ' 'fi' kept it curled around a limb or kept it curled as an emergency so 'L' should he fall it would catch on some limb, thus he would not have to drop the nuts already picked. Curious as it may seem, yet easily explained by Lamark's theory of acquired characters, the monkey lost all use of his left hand except to swing from limb to limb. For eons of time he has done this, always keeping the right one free to carry bread, paddle his young and pick nuts-the most important of which was to pick nuts which he fed his family. It is easily seen that both hands are necessary but at no time was a monkey ever known to pick nuts with his left hand. ,Qi Q, Simly-four D7nIIHnf -5 mn . One day there was a fine old gentleman monkey got his right hand injured so that he YVZIS not able to grasp tree fruit. His offspring numbered in the twenties. They all began to think how terrible it would be to starve to death. Necessity always was and always will be the mother of invention. In every family there is at least one with a few brains, and so there was one in this family-the thirteenth son. He drew up plans and specifications and in dis crude foundry he cast the tool that was to save his whole family. Indeed the tool was crude but it served the purpose. It was a clamp-like affair twith a screw to tighten the clamp! and was to be used by his father to jerk or wrench nuts from the tree. ii.: ne: I II hi. .EEE .EEE ..., . I si :::. Most of these pupils' did not know how to play the instrument 5 they had chosen, but by private lessons and many long hours of prac- tice, in about two months the band made its first public appearance at one of the basket ball games. Several other times during the year the band encouraged school spirit and honor for our high school. Wg? During the summer, instructions were continued and public appear- W' ances were make Decoration Day, Fourth of July and at the Little T T York picnic. VVhen the school year of I925-1926 opened, due to Mr. Elliott's leaving Salem, Mr. VValter Fisher of Pekin was chosen as instructor. This year the membership has grown to fifty members. The band ip played at the Father and Son banquet at several basket ball games p and for one general assembly period. Throughout the whole course the students are guided in their reading and the best books. both classic and modern, are made accessible through the public library. A special course in grammar is offered each semester primarily for those students who are going to enter college. Izzsfmrtors, Misses Wright, Allen, Bush. PUBLIC SPEAKING This course has only recently gained rather a prominent place in ll ll? : J i l i , , l lil: l f ll ' eil I ll? i ill Es :ll 2225 fi W, our high school. In some cases it is substituted for the last year of , . , English. Students are finding this course very helpful as it enables l Q them to speak with greater ease and with better expression of their Y thoughts. Four years ago it would have been thought impossible for I Q the students to have put on an entire program before the student body y w y and faculty. I l NOW it is a simple matter to arrange such a program. This has I been made possible largely through public speaking. 2 0 I 1z5f1'm'l0r, Miss Allen 0 2 MATHEMATICS Q A two year course in this subject is required for graduation.
