. . . TO THE STATE PLAYOFFS! In the semifinal game Rockhurst was pitted against the No. l-ranked Oak Park Northmen. Not phased by Oak Park's glittering reputation, the Hawks took a quick 7-0 lead on Bill Lillis' 69-yard run. They upped the margin to 13-0 when Hart took a pitchout and loped lO yards into the end zone. The Northmen roared back on a 54-yard gallop by Tom Lancaster, but Rockhurst countered with Sweeneyis 6-yard TD run, leaving it at 20-6. Right before half Oak Park scored on a 65-yard bomb to narrow the gap to 20-12. Rockhurst then scored on a 47-yard pass from Lillis to Garlich in the third quarter for a 28-12 lead. Oak Park,s last TD early in the 4th quarter was not enough, and the final score was 28-18. The Hawks had gained a berth in the finals opposite the Sumner Bulldogs. But unfortunately Rockhurst fell in the champion- ship game. A 27-yard scoring pass from Lillis to Mike Carney gave the Davismen an early 7-0 lead, but two long touchdown passes from Mike King to Ben Cowins boosted the Bulldogs to a 12-7 victory. Still, our gridders' season was a great one, and second place is certainly no disgrace.

4 The festivities of Homecoming provided the sur- roundings for Rockhurst's battle against highly-touted Junc- tion City. The Bluejays from Western Kansas were given a convincing lesson in Missouri football, as the Rock rolled to a 40-7 triumph. John Sweeney was the star in this one, with 184 yards on7 carries and 2 TD's. Kevin Hart added 2 touchdowns to his total in a 20-6 win over Mark Capra and the St. Pius Warriors. The stars of the next game, a 38-7 victory over Wyandotte, were the Hawklet offensive line- men, who opened gaping holes for Chris Garlich, Dan Fagan, and Bill Lillis on the way to 347 yards of rushing. The Hawks were now 8-O and rated No. 3 in the state. And who would appear next on the schedule but the No. 2 team, Columbia Hickman. On a cold, crisp night in Columbia, the two powerhouses battled in a hard-hitting medieval slugging match. But plagued by two costly fumbles, Rockhurst fell, 14-6. Even in defeat the Hawklets put forth a gutsy effort, as they battled the Kewpies to the final gun. This game will not soon be forgotten by the many Rockhurst supporters who made the trip. The following week the Davis men closed their regular season with a convincing 35-6 win over Ray-South. Again the defense shone. Caring a record of 9-1, Rock- hurst was named to the state playoffs a few days later. For the third time in five years, the Hawklets were battling for No. l. 5

In addition to these four, Head Coach Alton Davis won the Nigro Trophy as the top coach in Kansas City.
