PAGE 38 : CRYSTAL BALL ON December 10, the February graduating class of 1950 sponsored Riverside ' s first winter prom, the Crystal Ball. The purpose of the prom was to raise money for the Mercury Annual. The combined boys ' and girls ' gyms were crowded with dancing couples. This huge success was due largely to the enthusiasm of the February class. The Crystal Ball lived up to all expectations and offered a grand night of fun beneath the icicles hung from the ceiling. For the first time, also, the Court of hlonor was composed of representatives from each class. The Queen and King were elected from the February class. Riverside was one of the very first schools in Milwaukee to adopt this new system, and it has served as a goal for other schools that have recently become interested in our student government. Our organization was Instituted for two main purposes; first, to provide an opportunity for future citizens to gain much needed experience in deal- ing with their fellow workers, and second, to aid the student body in practicing self-control and learning respect for others. The teachers, pu- pils, activities, teams, sports, and student projects all combine to form our school. Yes, Riverside is truly our school, and its traditions and practices of self-government have become a part of every one of us. We hope that twenty-five years from now, this annual will serve as a reminder of four happy and forma- tive years at Riverside. The staff will then consider its job well done. To that end It has emphasized all phases of school life and endeavored to en- courage students to do outstanding work In serving their school — and it has given credit to those who earned it by participation in athletics, dra- matics, music, and other fields. We hope we have succeeded to some degree in the accomplishment of our goal; and if we have, the thanks go to those who gave many hours of time to aid in publishing the maga- zine. The Mercury depended on team- work, with the writers, editors, ad- visers, cartoonists, and business staff all working together. To the more advanced, the club offers Its darkroom facilities for ex- perimentation. RADIO CREW (Bottom right) Probably the least known of the crews in the school is the radio crew, which is responsible for the Penny Dance, the public address sys- tem, and all the mikes used in the school. MOVIE CREW (Bottom left) The purpose of the crew is to teach Riverside boys to operate and set up the various movie projectors and slide projectors. PAGE 71 HOME ECONOMICS CLUB THROUGHOUT the year, Home Economics Club provides a well-balanced variety of all types of pro- grams which are of interest to every girl. The actual preparation of a meal and movies to show latest fash- ions are examples of the interesting meetings that are provided. Teas to develop a better relationship be- tween students of the club and the teachers are favorites with the girls. V_ FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLUB THE Foreign Language Club has two main purposes: first, to promote friendly relations between nations; and- second;, tcj ' support our school in France. These goals are achieved through the Annual Christmas Fair and International Day, which is held sometime in spring. At the fair we sell many Items like Christmas cards, sachets, dolls, baskets, match covers, tally cards, and refresh- ments, the proceeds of which go to supply our French School with needed articles. On International Day the club presents an auditorium to inspire an international spirit in all students. Everyone dresses in the costume of his native country and prizes are given for the best costumes after the grand march at the close of school. PAGE 73 ORIENT HUMOROUS debates, serious debates, the Intersociety Debate with Crescent, Information, Please and Senate nneet- ing, panel discussions, and the traditional Mock Trial all helped make this year a successful one in Orient. The standard Orient meet- ing is a serious debate on some problem of the city, nation, or world — hence, the motto: Tomorrow ' s hiistory. Debated Today. An extensive campaign for new members, headed by Claud Thompson, brought many interesting people in- to Orient, and the interest of the club kept them there. This year the Mock Trial was presented for the entire school. Orient upheld the negative side in the Inter- society Debate, which was. Resolved: That the Presi- dent should be elected by direct vote. Debates, both serious and humorous, offer a variety of programs. The club ' s adviser, Mr. Ashford, gives excellent coaching as well as con- structive criticism. By this method. Crescent hopes to make Its mem- bers excellent debators. The regu- lar community sings in the Audi- torium, the participation of the choirs and choruses in the holi- day programs, and the com- bined efforts of the music class- es in the Spring Concert on May 13, all exemplify the spirit of real friendship between fac- ulty and pupil. Riverside music students also took part in the Music Festival of May 22, 23 and 24 in the Milwaukee Auditorium. Riversiders are justly proud of the fine programs and con- certs given by the Music De- partment and deeply appreci- ate the department ' s fine con- tributions to other extra-curricu- lar activities. PAGE 74 ART CLUB THE Arf Club as usual has been busy during the school year planning, designing, and painting scenery for the various events in the auditorium such as Thanksgiving, Christnnas, and Menno- rial Day programs. The Operetta and the Junior-Senior Play scen- ery kept us jumping the two semesters. The Art Club is a very informal club. We work separately and also in groups, depending on the type of things we are constructing. We still have our traditional Bohemian teas. If you enjoy scenery design- ing, come and join us next year. We know you ' ll like our friendly atmosphere. Top pic+ure — Ka+herine Frye, retired Pres.; Peggy Winter, Vice- Pres.; Doris Stahl, Pres.; Mary Grieb, Treas.; Betty Jones, Secy. The purpose of Cavaliers is to provide an organiza- tion through which the boys of East may serve their school and to provide an opportunity for them to meet and enjoy excellent entertainment. Living up to this purpose. Cavaliers has been very active during the last school year. Under the capable direction of Mr. Procknow, the club ' s advisor, Cavaliers collected the Thanksgiving baskets from our home rooms last fall. Together with Camaraderie, Cavaliers worked to plan and run the football hop and our spring prom. The club helped make these dances successful by work- ing on decorations and by selling tickets. At its twice-monthly meetings in the auditorium, the boys viewed many fine motion pictures of educational value, comedy, and sports. The activities started with tryouts and initiation in the fall. The highlight of the year was the A award won in the State Drannatics Forensic Contest. This was accomplished by nnuch hard work on the part of Miss Bodden and the cast and the combined efforts of many people. The winning one-act play was Londonderry Air. Under the direction of Miss Williams, The Wed- ding was presented for the members of the club and guests during the winter. At Christmas time Santa Claus presided at a party in his honor and distributed gifts and candy canes to all. The 1949-1950 year was a successful and prosperous one for Cue Club. Although they did not see their favorites rise to the very top, they had much to cheer about when they watched the Tiger cagers come from behind in their opening game to beat Tech In an over- time, knock North out from a tie for first place, shade their ancient rival. South, by one point. and beat one of the conference leaders, Lincoln, by another close score. As a matter of fact, the team won or lost seven of its games by three points or less. In their last game of the season the Tigers missed getting into the play- offs by a mere two points. These facts speak highly of the past season ' s record. GOLF - - THE LIFETIME SPORT THIS year, as often before, golf at East experienced ' a popular season. Practice began in the gym with the boys and girls each meeting twice a week. The later learned golf history, rules, form, etc., by studying film-strips. After learning the fundamentals from Mr. Hafey, the girls organized for intramural golf under the auspices of the G.A.A. and the direction of Mrs. Laden and Miss Green. In the boys ' golf this year eight dual meets were Scheduled with other city schools, and also the City Meet, at which an individual city champion and a win- ning team are determined. At the dual meets four men play on the A team and four more on the B team. Besides these a number of other boys who are competing for places on these squads also attend and play right along to gain experience. An intramural pro- gram is orga nized for the others. Mr. Hafey is assisted in his work by Mr. Engen. It is the object of these men not only to turn out golfers who will make the mark at school, but also boys and girls who will continue to enjoy golf in later life. PAGE 100 TENNIS ' - THE Tiger tennis team of 1950 seenns to have a more than excellent chance of repeating its performance of 1949, that is, winning the City Conference champion- ship. Four of the five championship team members are back from last year, among them Wayne Cody, the city singles champ of 1949, and Ralph Blount, a member of the champion doubles team. The other letter men are Arlie Schardt and Lewis Sapiro. On the other side of the ledger, however, lies the fact that a great deal depends on our luck in the draw and on the rather questionable depth of the squad. Still, with reasonable breaks and no unforseen mishaps, they can take the city championship, make a good showing in the state tournament, and possibly produce another individual champion or so. Top — Leroy Rieselbach, Lewis Sapiro, Ralph Blount. Bottom — Warren Sutherland, Fred Lander, Coach Lean with City Championship Trophy, City Champion Wayne Cody, Arlie Schardt. PAGE 101 T R A C K PAGE 102 JUDGING from Its early showings, the Orange track teann is headed for a glorious season. Individual stars from East scored heavily in the Municipal In- door Meet held at Baker Field hHouse. The team al- so took first place in a field of seventeen schools at the Milwaukee State Teachers College high school track relays; and in their first regular outdoor meet of the season, a triangular af- fair with Lincoln and Bay View, the Tiger cindermen had no trouble in coming out at the head of the list. Since at the time of printing not too much is known about the strength of the other city schools, it is difficult to make any definite predictions about the championship; there is, however, no question but that Coach Paul Pleister ' s team will be a first division contender at the City Meet this year. PAGE 103 CROSS COUNTRY Back row — Bill Inda, Ed Maleski, Allan Prange, Lee Whitcomb. Frcnt row — Jim Anderson, Ralph Blount, Gene Sheldorf, Bob Jarasek. LED by fleet Bill Inda, East ' s 1949 cross country team ' had a very successful season, winning all but one of its dual engagements, placing second in the city, and taking fourth place in the all-state meet. Bill, who is the team ' s captain, came in first in all the dual meets, the north sectional, and the city meets; and he placed third in the state. Jim Anderson, Ralph Blount, Bob Jarsek, Bill McCarthy, Ed MaleskI, Al Prange, Lee Whit- comb, and Gene Sheldorf completed the varsity team. Boys who ran on our B team, which placed third in the city, included Dick hiayden, Don hiayden, Curt Koch, and Jim Lent. Lent, a freshman, won the city B team meet. According to cross country coach Pleister, the Tiger harriers would have been able to do even better, had there been a wealth of reserve material to support Inda. The only solution is to have more boys turn out for cross country. If enough fellows come out to back up those returning from the 1949 squad, the prospects for next fall will be greatly improved. THIS year Riverside girls have shown a greater enthusiasm in athletics than ever before. The girls join G.A.A. to encourage athletic sportsmanship and honesty, and to have closer relationships among the members. They are eligible to v in the coveted R emblem, but must earn 1,000 points by participating in a majority of the sports offered. They must be out- standing athletes in tournament games and co-opera- tive students in gym class. Points are awarded on the basis of team standing, the championship squads getting the maximum number possible. The sports offered are volleyball, basketball, Softball, badminton, and ping pong, which created fun in the gym this year. G.A.A. also sponsors parties, such as the Pocahontis Pow Wow. Dressed as Indians, the girls had a wonder- ful time. Even a feather in one ' s hair made her one of the crowd. Good Posture Week, another feature attraction sponsored by G.A.A., is likely to become a tradition at East. Everyone demonstrates good posture; and in an auditorium contest qualified judges choose our king and queen, who receive special prizes. To end the first semester, G.A.A. gives an exhibi- tion game of girls ' basketball. This year the Juniors defeated the Seniors on January I I, for the title of class champions. PAGE 104 to J.
