Standing: Mr. Curtin, Coach: Wolvin, Spindler, Hoff, Rudolf, Beichman, Manager: Seated: O'Doherty, Kellman, O'Brien, Root, Captain: Carey, Gardner, Lench. HB A S IME N3 A HL UL Prospects for the baseball season this spring appear quite bright. At this writing, with the campaign already under way, the Red and Gray has taken three out of four games. In the opener Lincoln fell before Riverdale's twelve run assault and the brilliant no-hit hurling of Connie O'Doherty, Then in a tight, well-played game we beat Trinity, a traditional rival. 3-1. Englewood, the following week, upset the team in another 3-1 contest played at Engle- wood. Lying ahead are the Tri-League games with Hackley and Storm King, and important games with Manhattan Prep and Irving. Coach Clare Curtin has a club which, thoroughly able to give every team it plays a tough battle, should win a majority of its games. Connie O'Doherty, who combines great speed with a good curve ball, handles the pitching chores. Forming the other half of the battery is Charlie Lench, a converted outfielder, who made the switch in positions with consummate ease. The only infielder remaining from last year's team is shortstop and captain Bill Root. Rounding out the infield, Ed Kellman takes over first base, while Hugh O'Brien covers sec- ond, and Charlie Carey, who last year played in the outfield, manages the hot corner. The outer gardens are patrolled by Don Wolvin in left, Chris Hoff in center, and Dan Gardner in right. Monty Spindler, on hand as a pinch hitter and utility outfielder, and Iohn Rudolf, a handy man to have in the infield, furnish the reserve strength. We sincerely hope that in the remaining games the team will maintain the fine record with which it has begun the season. iiifwt K S . .... f 1 , ,. l t , , rt . r -.. HHOCMEY Triangular League Champions for the third successive year is the singular honor which the Riverdale Hockey Team attained this year. Indeed this was no mean achieve- ment, for with only two lettermen returning, a practically new sex- tet had to be built up. Coach Phelps. with co-captains Bill Root and Connie O'Doherty, succeeded in moulding together a very capable and efficient first six. Charley Lench, a converted forward, guarded the nets very ably: Pete Pulrang and Bill Root played a rugged, hard- checking game at defense, while a speedy forward line of West, O'Do- herty and Ingersoll kept up an ever menacing offense against their op- ponents. Charley Carey was the chief replacement for this line as he could fit well into any of the three positions. All of these were backed by Dick Kellogg, Pete Reiser, Hugh O'Brien, and Dick Gabriel who ef- ficiently filled in whenever called upon. Rieser, Carey, Ingersoll, Pulrang. The season opened with a well-deserved l-0 victory over Greer, but Hackley spoiled a perfect season for the Red and Grey by upsetting them on the latter's home rink. This, however, proved to be our first and last defeat, for Riverdale journeyed up to Storm King and decisively defeated them. In the final game of the year, Riverdale avenged the former defeat by whipping Hackley in a hotly contested game at Norwalk, Conn. Scor- ing honors went to O'Doherty, with the other members of the first six sharing the remaining goals. Our heartiest congratulations to a fighting team and a fine aggregation of fellows. FENCMNQ Under the able direction of Coach Bill Bethune, the Riverdale fencers faced a difficult schedule. In spite of the loss of much championship material a team consisting in the most part of Fourth Farmers was formed after long practice. The season began with a series of triumphs, as school after school fell before the Red and Gray fencers. Defeating Valley Forge by 12 point. the three weapon team took the Von Arnold trophy for the second consecutive year. Next the swordsmen began to take over their UHHUUI quota Oi Colleges. Easily Standing: Mr. Bethune, coach: Eichwenwald, Saenger, Fletcher. Chang, beCllil1Q Si- IOhH'S FIOSI1. three N., Gahagan, Baurle. Seated: Vicini, Reynolds, Orteig, captain: Chang, Streiqht matches were dropped to N.C., Cmader. Not presenr: Sherman. manager. Yale, Columbia, and N.Y.U. Recov- ering from this losing streak. we again trounced Valley Forge. The year's best performances were turned in by saberwielder Heinz Eichenwald and epeeman Iohn Vi- cini, although much credit must go to Captain George Orteig who often saved the young foil team from a shutout by the more expe- rienced college fencers. To sum up. the season was a good one, thanks to the excellent coaching and the great interest taken by the boys. In April much of this green material proved that persistent prac- tice makes perfect. The foil team registered an impressive sweep in the A.A.P.S. championship compe- tition. As individuals George Or- teig and Iohn Vicini won the champion titles in the A and B division respectively. Standing: Gabriel, West, Root, Lench, O'Doherty, Kellogg. Kneeling:

T IRAQ UK S Standing: Mr. Biron, Coach: Hess, Orteig, Spencer, Wolv- in, Blanco, Reed, Iacobson, Prioleau, Carey, Mr. Bethune. Coach. Seated: Searls, Ya- koushkin, Kellogg. West, Cap- tain: Peyton, Pulrang, Lewis. P. Not Present: Fay: Stearns. Stratton, Managers. The development of the track season can be looked upon with optimism. Already the team has gained a de- cisive triumph, proving its superior strength . if , over McBurney with a ' W r ' f score of 55-27. The nu- cleus ot the squad con- sists of a number of experienced runners headed by Captain West, an outstanding and reliable half-miler. The shorter distances are dominated by Peyton and Hess, both of whom should prove valuable to the team. In the field such performers as Yakoushkin and Spencer make winning an easy matter for the Riverdale team. Wolvin, Kellogg, Fay. and Jacobson form an invaluable part of the team because of their strong support. With- out Messrs. Biron's and Bethune's energetic and well-planned coaching the squad could not possibly have attained such high efficiency. In view of these facts we can predict a successful season. T HE UNH! HN!! ill S Without the stars of last year, Coach Scott has been hard pressed to put a polished team on the courts. The first match, played on a cold, blustery day, was lost to a good Fieldston team 4-l: but this cannot be taken as an indication of the squad's real strength. Confident that the team will improve with prac- tice and make a good showing, we wish Cap- tain Rod Kuhn and his team mates, Dick Ga- briel, Perry Frank, and Thorndike Saville, suc- cess in their coming matches. Blum, K., Manager: Riesen- teld, Frank, Murch, Saville. Kuhn, Gabriel, Mr. Scott. Coach. Not Present: Chang. N
