Self reliance, discipline, and ini- tiative are the qualities LTC. Charles Abbey instills in the young men and women involved in the Ju- nior Reserve Officers Training Corps. As Senior Army Instructor, LTC. Abbey served as an ofHcer in the United States Army following his graduation from Penn State in 1959. Born in Kenmore, New York, LTC. Abbey feels that the adventure, challenge and the security of the job were his reasons for going in to the Army after his four years as an ROTC cadet in college. Upon earning his commision as a Second Lieutenan t, LTC. Abbey en- tered helicopter flight training in Fort Rucker, Alabama. LTC. Ab- beys flying career began in Ger- many, flying cargo and reconais- sance helicopters along the iron cur- tain close to communist Czechoslo- vakia. After finishing an advanced Army ofHcer school in the US., LTC. Abbey went to Vietnam with the 11 th Armored Cavalry piloting scout helicopters. I was prepared to go, said LTC. Abbey. As a pro- fessional soldier it was my duty. After serving two tours in Vietrnam, LTC. Abbey feels that during the early years of the war we accom- plished our mission of assisting the South Vietnamese in their struggle against the communist north. Un- fortunately, the tides of battle and policy led to the eventual fall of South Vietnam. After his return from Vietnam, LTC. Abbey went back to the avi- Zation school and continued to serve as instructor pilot and helicopt commander until his retirement from the Army in 1980. Married with two children, LTC. Abbey en- joys many diverse hobbies. I spend a lot of time gardening and enjoy reading poetry. With his broad ex- perience, LTC. Abbey has brought to Reynolds a wealth of talent and ability that he shares with his stu- dents.
