Farms-r's Festival Gradually the newness of the front office acquired an everyday luster. The Union became the place to hang around between, or instead of, classes. Students learned to balance studies and priorities Cin light of five-credit DWCD. But the women . . . well, THAT particular newness took a lot longer to wear off. College administrative changes are expected. Facilities existed to be used. New academic pilot programs were anticipated. But the coming of women to Providence College was a major change - in the traditional emotional, physical, and academic consciousness of the school. The coming of women was no compromise, no lowering of standards for the institution. After fifty- four years, it was a necessary adjustment to the climate of the times and also an economic necessity. The women students received, as might be expected, many varied reactions to their presence. These ranged from unexpected, over-gallant courtesies, to a just one of the guys camaraderies. They were offered apologies for unintentional obscenities, off-color jokes, gory details, and un-held doors. They were consistently asked in informal and classroom discussions for the worn:-:n's point of view. They were protectively guarded by strict parietals, guided by well-intentioned counselors, ignored by those few who had originally opposed their coming.
