Assistant Coach, Wayne Plummer fnot picturedj. 6 FO0TBAll The Poteau Pirates football team, ably coached by Sherman Floyd, has displayed an outstanding quality of spirit and sportsmanship as they have out-hustled all of their rivals. BOONVILLE 12 '- 6 The Pirates attempting a comeback from 1956's disastrous season, were hampered by first game nervousness, but managed to out-gain, out-dig, and out-score a big, tough Booneville team, winning the first game of the season 12 - 6. SALLISAW 0 - 12 MCALESTERS - 33 Poteau's out-weighed Pirates put up a game fight against the burly Buffaloes from McAlester Friday night and flashed an offensive which, through the airways, produced the longest run of the game, but bowed in defeat by a count of 33 - 6. STIGLER 25 - '7 The Poteau Pirates showed some of their old time power at Stigler by rocking up a 25 - 7 victory over the un- defeated Class B Stigler Panthers, thus throwing the NOAA championship race into a four-way tie. The Pirates were charging harder under the new assignments given out by Coach Sherman Floyd. The ends and tackles were turning in the wide plays, cutting down the off tackle slants, and any other play that was tried. The best pass defense of the season was displayed as the Panthers were held to seven yards in the air. WILBURTON 31 - 6 The Pirates were in an all or nothing mood as they exploded five touchdown plays which went for long gains to score a convincing 31 to 6 victory over the Wilburton Diggers. Wilburton led in lst dow ns while Poteau commanded the total yardage with 411 yards racked up for the evening. CHECOTAH 34 - 9 Poteau's poignant Pirates polished off an impotent but fighting Checotah Wildcat eleven before a small, enthu- siasticggroup of loyal supporters and won their second NOAA conference victory out of three starts by a score of 34 to .
