William Magee, Bill Bentley, an author who has just made a 55,000 wager with the owner of Baldpate Inn. William Gregg, appears in the prologue with Mr. and Mrs. Quimby, Richard Mullens and Lyle Weeks, who are caretakers of the Inn. In order to win the 55.000, Magee must write a play in twenty-four hours. and he chooses Baldpate Inn as his setting. Magee has been assured privacy by the fact that only one key to the Inn exists. However, complications arise in the first and second acts by the appearance of seven keys. Some money, hidden in an old safe at the Inn, proves to be the object of search for several intruders, each one entering the Inn by a supposedly uonly key. After each entrance a new and more exciting polish is spread on the mystery. The romance of the play is discovered with the arrival of a pretty reporter.
